The Gene Pool: JTR's Colorful Family History

Quaker Silhouettes
Early Quakers objected to having their portraits drawn or painted, but likenesses drawn from tracing a shadow casting and trimming out the resulting shape were considered acceptable by the church.

If you are lucky enough to locate a copy of a small book entitled "Quaker Profiles: Pictorial & Biographical 1750-1850" by Anna Cox Brinton, you will find additional silhouettes of the Underhill family of Eastern Shore Maryland, Stephen Grellet (1773-1855), Ellis Yarnall (1757-1847), Dr. John Fothergill, Capt. Paul Cuffe, Hester Savory, Hannah Sansom and daughters, Drs. Joseph and Isaac Parrish, John Randolph of Roanoke, Joseph Sturge and Family, Elizabeth Fry with T. Fowell Buxton and Others.
