Dundee Township Leases

The following provides information about some of the early leases of St. Regis Indian Land in the south west corner of Dundee Township.  When settlers first arrived, sections of New York State, Dundee Township, and Glengarry County, Ontario, had been part of a track of land reserved for Indian use. As the years passed, the land was sold to either the original settler or the individal who took over the lease. The information below was very kindly transcribed by Fred Sedgwick  from Canadian National Archives Ref. RG10 Vol. 12352. The documents are available for consultation only in their original form at the Ottawa location.  

John ASHBURNE. 30 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 27, consisting of 100 acres at Broken Front, below Salmon River. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

John ASHBURNE. 30 May 1856. Lease for 30 years of Lot number 27, north of Broken Front.

Jacob AUBREY. 30 July 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 20, consisting of 100 acres on the 2nd concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

William AUBREY. 8 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 7 on the 5th concession.

William AUBREY. 24 January 1820. By Assignment for 99 years, Lots number 17 and 18, consisting of 200 acres on the 2nd concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 shillings. Annual rent 2 pounds 10 shillings, payable 1 January each year. Note: The actual Lease Document is not in the archives.

William AUBREY. 10 May 1834. . Lease of Lots number 17 and 18 on the 2nd concession for 99 years.

Henry C. BAGLEY. 15 February 1821. Lease of Lots number 32 and 33 on the 1st concession, and Lot number 25 on the 2nd concession, for a total of 208 acres, leased for 99 years. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 pounds. Annual rent 2 pounds 11 shillings and 8 pence, payable 1 January each year.

David BAKER. 26 December 1843. Sale from Patrick BUCHANAN to David Baker. Property consists of two lots in the village of Dundee on the east side of the Salmon River.

Benjamin A. BRUNSEN.12 March 1854. Lease for 30 years of Lot number 15 at Broken Point.

Horace BRUNSON. 24 February 1857. Lease for 30 years of Lot number 24 on the 1st concession.

Horatio BRUNSON. 6 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lots number 20 and 21, consisting of 200 acres below Salmon River on the 1st concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 10 pounds. Annual rent 2 pounds 10 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Lucy BRUNSON. 26 February 1821. Lease for 99 years of two Marsh Islands consisting of 150 acres at Broken Front. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 shillings. Annual rent one pound 17 shillings and sixpence, payable 1 January each year.

Patrick BRUNSON. 6 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 26, consisting of 150 acres on the 1st concession, below the Salmon River. George A. BURNS. 4 June 1850 (original date of 12 February 1822 crossed out). Lease for 99 years of Lots number 22 and 23, consisting of 40 acres on the 2nd concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent 12 shillings, payable 1 January each year.

Robert CALQUHOUN. 10 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 7, Bittern Island.

Allen CAMERON. 16 March 1824. Lease for 99 years of Lots number 6 and 7, consisting of 200 acres on the 4th concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 10 pounds. Annual rent 2 pounds 10 shillings payable 1 January each year.

Alex CAMPBELL. 16 March 1820. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 3, Bittern Island.

Angus CAMPBELL. 15 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Gardner Island in the marsh north of Broken Front, and adjoining Mr. Brunson's island below the Salmon River.

William CAMPBELL. 15 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 2, consisting of 200 acres located on the 1st and 2nd concessions. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Amable CASCINETT. 16 February 1819. Lease for 99 years of an island of 90 acres in the marsh joining the southwest part of Gardner Island. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 shillings. Annual rent one pound 2 shillings and 6 pence, payable 1 February each year.

Turns (Thomas?) CAWLEY. 1824. Lot number 9, 4th concession was transferred from James Blackford (or Blanchford). See entry under John Derry for more detail.

Solomon YOUMANS CHESLEY. -- -- 1821(fragmented record). Lease for 99 years of a plot of land on Cornwall Island.

Solomon Y. CHESLEY. 22 April 1829. Transfer from John Van Koughnet to Solomon Y. Chesley. Land situated on an island in front of the Township of Cornwall and opposite the centre street in the Town of Cornwall.

Oliver CLASSEN. 18 August 1821. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 6 on the 5th concession.

Robert COLQUHOUN. 15 August 1821. Lease for 99 years of Lots number 13, 14 and 15, consisting of 300 acres on the 1st concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 pounds. Annual rent 3 pounds 15 shillings payable 1 January each year.

Thomas CROSS. 1 March 1821. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 5 consisting of 100 acres on the 4th concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 January each year.

James CUSSIN (OR CURRIN). 14 February 1821. Lease of Lots number 20, 21 and 23 on the 3rd concession for 99 years.

John DAVIDSON. 18 October 1821. Lease for 99 years of Lots B, C and D at Berton Creek, on the east side of the Salmon River, St. Regis Reservation. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 10 pounds. Annual rent 8 pounds payable 1 January each year.

John DERRY. 6 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 9, consisting of 100 acres on the 4th concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year. This lot was transferred to James Blackford (or Blanchford) and his wife Jannet McLaren of the Township of Charlottenburg, County of Glengarry, on 12 March 1820. The same lot was later transferred to Turns (Thomas?) Cawley in 1824.

Hypolite EMLOT (DIT PERUKIEZ). 15 February 1830. . Lease of part of Lots 8, 9, 10 and 11 at Broken Front for 30 years.

John EMPEY. 1 January 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 14, consisting of 100 acres at Broken Front, Petit Chenail. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 January each year. Note: The actual Lease Document is not in the archives.

John EMPEY. 28 March 1839. Lease of Lot number 14 at Broken Front, Petit Chenail. The lot was originally leased 1 January 1819.

William EMPEY. 2 June 1820. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 10, consisting of 80 acres at Petit Chenail on the 1st concession above Salmon River. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 shillings. Annual rent one pound, payable 1 February each year.

James FARLINGER. 8 November 1819. By Assignment for 99 years, the west half of Lot number 30 and the north half on Lot number 31 on the 1st concession; plus Lot number 31 at Broken Front, for a total of 200 acres. Thomas FARLINGER. 2 January 1847. Thomas Melviers to Thomas Farlinger. Transfer of the Lease of Lot number 28 on the 1st concession. The original lease, dated 1819, was for 99 years.

Richard FITZPATRICK. 30 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 27, consisting of 100 acres on the 1st concession below Salmon River. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Aaron FOSTER. 16 February 1821. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 24, consisting of 60 acres on the 2nd concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 shillings. Annual rent 15 shillings, payable 1 January each year.

William FRASER. 2 June 1820. Lease of the west half of Lot number 7 on the 2nd and 3rd concessions.

William FRASER. 11 March 1831. Lease for 99 years of the north half of Lot number 7 on the 2nd concession, and the north half of Lot number 7 on the 3rd concession, for a total of 100 acres. George FROTHINGHAM. 6 January 1856. Lease for 30 years of a lot of land in Marsh Meadow.

George H. FROTHINGHAM. 6 June 1856. Lease of the "Kinchler" lot for 30 years.

Patrick GALLAGER. 22 March 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 6 at Petit Chenail. The land, which contains 100 acres, adjoins that of Jos Leclair on one side and George Truan on the other. Located south side of the St. Lawrence River, 2 or 3 miles east of St. Regis Village. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Alexander GARDNER. 26 February 1821. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 19, consisting of 100 acres on the 2nd concession.. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent one pound five shillings, payable 1 January each year.

Alexander GARDNER. 9 April 1821 (or 1827). Lease for 99 years of the northwest part of Lot number 20, consisting of 50 acres on the 3rd concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 20 pounds 12 shillings and 6 pence. Annual rent 12 shillings and 6 pence, payable 1 January each year. Jacob HOLLINBECK. 19 April 1821. Lease of marsh on the south side of the St. Lawrence River known as "Alleres Island". The island being near Sucker Creek, north of Broken Front. Lease term is 99 years.

Jacob HOLLINBECK. 2 March 1836. Lease of a Tamarack Lot for 30 years.

Charles HOPKINS.9 May 1851. Lease for 30 years of a lot at Grosse Point (added note says "Grass Point").

John LAMASNEY. 22 March 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 4 at Petit Chenail. The land, which contains 100 acres, adjoins that of George Truan (or Truax) which ?? of ??? & Charley the Mason, an Indian on the east side. Front of the st. Lawrence River, 2 or 3 miles east of St. Regis. Annual rent 2 pounds 10 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Andrew LECLAIR. 11 March 1820. Lease for 99 years of the front part of Lot number 7, containing 67 acres located at Broken Front, Petit Chenail. Annual rent 16 shillings and 8 pence. Note: The actual Lease Document is not in the archives.

John McGIBBON. 20 October 1824. Lease of Lots number 15, 16 and 17 at Broken Front for 30 years.

Donald McKINNON and Dougald McKINNON. 22 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lots number 4 and 5 on the 2nd concession, and Lot number 5 on the 3rd concession below Salmon River for a total 300 acres. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 pounds. Annual rent 3 pounds 15 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

John McGIBBONS. 8 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lots number 16 and 17, consisting of 200 acres on the 1st concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 10 pounds. Annual rent 2 pounds 10 shillings, payable 1 February each year. (A note indicates that Lot number 17 was transferred to Lauchlan McBraw).

William McLEAN. 27 October 1835. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 9, consisting of 100 acres on the 2nd concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 125 pounds 10 shillings. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Edward PHALIN (OR PHALERN). 6 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 13, consisting of 100 acres on the 4th concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 1 pound 5 shillings. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Benjamin PHILIPS. 16 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 12, consisting of 100 acres on the 1st concession, below the Salmon River. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds 15 shillings. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

Eneas PLAMONDON. 17 June 1821. Lease for 99 years of a Lot on the bank of the Salmon River near Pike Creek, consisting of 200 acres. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 5 pounds. Annual rent 1 pound 5 shillings payable 1 January each year.

John SEATON. 19 November 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 17 on the 3rd concession.

Jonas SCHRYER. 8 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of the northeast half of Lot number 29 and the east half of Lot number 30, for a total of 200 acres, at Broken Front on the 1st concession. John SYLVERS. 7 June 1823. Lease of Lot A on the banks of the Salmon River for 99 years. Annual rental one pound 5 shillings payable 1 January each year.

Patrick TIMMINS & Patrick GARRITY. 29 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 15 on the 3rd Concession. Originally leased to Farquhar McRae.

George TRUAN (or TRUAX). 22 March 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 5 at Petit Chenail. The land, which contains 100 acres, adjoins that of Patrick Gallager on one side and John Lamasney. Front of the st. Lawrence River, 2 or three miles east of St. Regis Village. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.

George TRUAN (OR TRUAX). 10 October 1819. Lease for 99 years of Lot number 8, Bittern Island.

Henry UTLEY. 15 October 1836. Transfer of a 99 year Lease from A.M. HITCHCOCK of Malone, N.Y. to Henry Utley. The land transferred consists of 247 arpents described in the original lease from the St. Regis Chiefs in 1825 (Original lease not included in the archives). Leased for 99 years in consideration of eleven hundred dollars. An added note in 1977 says the land is Lot 10, the Utley Farm, adjacent to Pike Creek.

Jacob WADE. 16 February 1829 (original date 10 February 18190. Lease for 99 years of part of Lots 22 and 23, consisting of 95 acres on the 2nd concession. Annual rent one pound 3 shillings and 9 pence, payable 1 January each year.

Jacob WADE. 5 March 1842. Lease for 99 years of lot 21, consisting of 100 acres on the 2nd concession. Money paid in consideration of the lease was 15 pounds. Annual rent one pound 5 shillings, payable 1 February each year.
