Extracts from The New Dominion newspaper

THE NEW DOMINION newspaper was published from the Village of Durham (now Village of Ormstown) during the period 1873 to 1885 according to some sources. The same source indicates that it was taken over by new management in 1885 and renamed the ORMSTOWN COURIER. The available microfilm in the archives suggests that the publication schedule was erratic especially before 1880 or that many issues are missing from the film.

The following personal announcements were extracted by Gina Smith from the available microfilm at the National Archives of Canada covering the time period of April 9, 1874 to January 5, 1882. Rumour has it that Robert Sellar, publisher of the Huntingdon Gleaner, considered the Ormstown papers to be competition for his paper and refused to accept and publish in the Gleaner any announcement that he thought would also appear in the Ormstown paper. Therefore these extracts may reveal information of genealogical interest that does not appear in the Gleaner extracts on the Huntingdon GenWeb site.

April 9, 1874 Died - At South Georgetown, April 4th, Robert, son of William Logan, aged 4 years and 9 months. May 14, 1874 Died - The body of Mr. Samuel Cottingham, who was drowned in the Chateauguay on the 23rd of April, was discovered on the morning of Tuesday the 12th inst. about one mile beyond Allans's Corners. Birth - In Durham Village, Ormstown, on Monday the 11th inst., the wife of Mr. John McWhinnie of a daughter. May 28, 1874 June 10, 1875 Married - At Ormstown, on the 4th inst., at the residence of R. N. Walsh, Esq., by the Rev. D. W. Morison, assisted by the Rev. J. ?. Paul, Simon Fax, Esq., to Miss Jessie Walker, both of Ormstown. Married - In New York, on the 2nd inst., at the residence of the bride's mother, by the Rev. George B. Draper, D.D., Archibald McEachern A?? merchant of Montreal, to E? Paulius?, youngest daughter of the late David A. Fowler, Councillor at law. Died - At Franklin, on Saturday the 19th inst., Mr Wm. Stevenson, aged 62 years. December 17, 1874 June 22, 1876 August 14, 1879 Info - The other day we had a call from Mr. Gebbie of Philadelphia who after an absence of 16 years has been on a visit to his brother Mr. Thos. Gebbie of Howick. He has been for some time in the publishing business and has now one of the largest book stores in that city; and doing an immense business. Info - Yesterday we had a call from Mr Thos S Williams, son of Squire Williams of Ormstown, who is now on a visit to his friends. Some 16 years ago, when quite a youth, he went to Lindsay, Ont., and steadily worked his way up as a miller, until at length thro energy and steady habits he became a partner in a large milling establishment and is now one of the leading and public spirited men of that town. Info - We had also a visit from our old friend, Mr. Thos Galbraith, formerly Editor and Proprietor of the Port Hope Valuator , but now in connection with the Scottish American of New York. Mr. Galbraith is now on a visit to his brother at North Georgetown. Married - At the residence of the bride's father, North Georgetown, on the 12th inst., by the Rev. D. W. Morison, B.A., Matthew Clingel, Martintown, Ont., to Christian, daughter of William Sangster. Died - At the English River, near Chrysostome, on Monday the 4th August 1879, James Craig, a native of Paisley, Scotland aged about 69 years. Died - On the 6th August, at Russeltown Flats, P.Q., after a very short illness, Freeman Perham, youngest son of Freeman Perham, aged 19 years, greatly beloved by all who knew him. September 18, 1879 Birth - At Montague, Michigan, the wife of Wm. Stewart, formerly of Durham, of a son. Married - At the residence of the bride's father, on the 10th, by the Rev Dr Muir, Robert Brodie jr of Coteau St Pierre, Montreal to Jane, daughter of Archibald Ogilvie, Esq., South Georgetown. Married - At Kingsey Falls, on the 8th September, by the Rev W. F. Boudgreau, John McWilliams, of Huntingdon, Q., to Mary Emma, only daughter of Smith Leith, Esq., merchant of Kingsey Falls. Married - At St Andrew's church manse, on the 9th September, by the Rev. J. B. Muir, M.A., Wm. B. Cameron, Esq., to Miss Elizabeth M. Gardiner, both of Dewittville, P.Q. Died - At his late residence, Godmanchester, on the 4th inst., James Warden, sr., aged 70 years and 13 days. Deceased was a native of Dumbartonshire, near Cumbernauld, Scotland. Died - In Hamilton, Bermuda, on the 18th ult., James Richardson, a native of Roxburghshire, Scotland, aged 77 years. Note-Some 45 years ago, Mr. Richardson and a brother of his left Scotland for America. The ship on its passage was drifted upon the reefs of Bermuda and became a wreck. The two brothers, tailors by trade, became residents of the town of Hamilton, and carried on business together for several years, when they dissolved partnership - the one emigrating to the Western States, the other remaining in Bermuda, where until the time of his death he has still continued to reside. The deceased was a brother to the late John Richardson, who for many years resided in the 4th Concession of North Georgetown; and also brother to Mrs Samuel Moffat who died last March, mother of William Moffat of Jamestown, near Durham, and of Samuel Moffat of Beech Ridge. November 13, 1879 December 4, 1879 Died - James McNair died a few days ago in the vicinity of Huntingdon, P.Q., in his 108 year. Birth - In Durham, Ormstown, Monday Dec 1st, the wife of T. Baird, merchant, of a son. Married - On the 2th, at the residence of the bride's father by the Rev. J. B. Muir, assisted by the Rev. Mr. McKerracher, William Orr, to Elspeth, daughter of William Orr, Esq., all of English River, South Georgetown. Died - At Covey Hill, on the 6th inst., Hugh O'Neill, aged 88 years and 6 months. Died - In the parish of St. Anicet, on the 19th November, while at his son James's, John Davidson, senr, aged 88 years. Deceased was a native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and emigrated to this country in 1835, when he settled in the Township of Dundee. Died - At Jamestown, on Thursday the 27th November, 1879;-after a lingering consumption - Martha, wife of Thomas Rutherford, and third daughter of David Kee, formerly of Ormstown, aged 33 years. December 25, 1879 Married - On the 17th inst., at the Manse, South Georgetown, by the Rev. Dr. Muir, James Angel to Elspeth, daughter of Daniel McFarlane, Esq., all of English River, St Jean Chrysostome. Died - Suddenly at River Outard, on Tuesday Dec. 23rd inst., William Moffat, son of the late Samuel Moffat of Beech Ridge aged 39 years. January 8, 1880 Info - Mr Samuel Todd, of Durham, has sold his property to Mr John Greer, of Ormstown, and purposes leaving with his family next month for Minnesota where he has purchased land property. Info - Mr. Neil Cook of Owatonna, Minn., in a letter dated Dec 25th, says........ Died - In Montreal, on Saturday Jan. 3rd, 1880, of typhoid fever, Isabella McNeil, of Durham, Ormstown, aged 40 years. Died - At Boyd's Settlement, on Saturday the 3rd inst., of aronpic?? diphtheria, George Henry, eldest son of William Coulter, aged 4 years. February 5, 1880 Info - Athelstan has lost one of its most gentlemanly and public-spirited citizens, in the person of Mr. James Shiriff - for several years past foreman for Boyd & Co. in their extensive wooden manufactury. We understand he contemplates seeking his fortune in the far West. Info - Margaret McMillan of Valleyfield has taken an action for separation from bed and board against John McCuaig, her husband. Info - We make the following extract from a letter received from Mr. George McArthur, formerly of North Georgetown, but now of Victoria, British Columbia. .......Mr. Peter McIntyre of Port Louis, near Huntingdon is here. He has been connected with the Cariboo mines as superintendent of a Quartz Mill during the past two years....... Mr. McArthur also informs us that he incidentally met with one George Murdoch, son of the late James Murdoch of Beauharnois; who has been absent for many years, and from whom no direct communication has been received. Should any of his friends wish to communicate they can address their letters to: Dead Lake Casiar Gold Mines, British Columbia. Info - We have received the following nice little letter all the way from British Columbia, written by a daughter of Mr. Geo. McArthur, Alvina Barbara McArthur, age 8 (Note: mentions a brother, aged 2, no name given) Info - Mr. Samuel Todd with wife and family left last Monday en route for Minnesota where he has purchased a homestead to take up a permanent residence. Died - At North Georgetown, Chateauguay, on the 29th of January 1880, after four months illness, throat disease, Robert Baillie, aged 54 years and 10 months. A native of County Down, Ireland. February 12, 1880 Married - On the 5th inst., by the Rev. W. A. Allen, at the house of the bride's uncle, Mr. Alfred C. Abbott, to Mary Frances Welsh, all of Franklin. Died - At Mill Range, South Georgetown, on the 1st inst., in the 69th year of his age, Alex. Campbell, a native of Kuspdale, Argyleshire, Scotland. The deceased came to this country with his parents in the year 1819, and from that time has been a resident in the District. Died - At Jamestown, near Durham, on February 4th, 1880, Mary Woolley, relict of the late Samuel Crutchfield, aged 84 years. Note: The deceased was a native of Nottinghamshire, England and emigrated to Canada in the year 1823, and shortly afterwards with her husband settled on the farm, on which until the date of her death-departure she has continued to reside. Died - At Detroit, Michigan, Jany 23rd, at the Michigan Exchange, of diabetes, caused by an injury to his spine while in charge of a train about four years ago, John Robb, late conductor on the C. S. Railway, and son of John Robb, sr., of English River, near St. Jean Chrysostome, Chateauguay Co.,P.Q. His remains were interred in Lake Side Cemetery, Port Huron.(aged 36 years, 3 months and 23 days) February 26, 1880 Info - A number of the young men of Parkhill, Ont. have instituted a Mock Parliament.......The Minister of Finance is T. L. Roger, Bank Manager at Parkhill - a son of Col. Robert Roger of Franklin Centre....... Birth - At Huntingdon, on the 13th February, the wife of Dr. Marshall, of a son. Birth - At Huntingdon, on the 13th February, the wife of James Henry of a son. Died - On the 12th inst., at Gaines, N.Y., aged 20 years George, the only son of the Rev. George Anderson, formerly minister of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Huntingdon. Died - On the 12th inst., at the 4th con St Louis de Gonzague, aged 69 years, Esther Hood, relict of the late James Goodhall. Died - On the 13th inst., in Gananoque, Ont., aged 33 years, John, son of the late Alex. Henry, watchmaker of Huntingdon. Died - On the 19th inst., at Hinchinbrooke, aged 72 years, Alex. Boyd, a native of County Derry, Ireland. Died - At Jamestown, on 21st Feb, Euphemie Innes, relict of the late Wm Smellie, aged 55 years; and at Valleyfield, on the morning of the 25th, aged 89 years, the mother of the deceased Mrs. Smellie, and relict of the late Mr. Innes, formerly of Ormstown. March 4, 1880 Died - Many deaths have occurred up this way during the past two weeks. Neither age nor sex has escaped the demands of the Grim Monster . On Feb. Wednesday 18, at 12 o'clock noon, Mr. Alex. Boyd, an old and respected resident of Hinchinbrook, was gathered to his fathers. Just one week from that day, at the same hour, his respected spouse breathed her last. Mr. Boyd had been an invalid for some years, hence his departure was not unexpected. Mrs. Boyd had been bed-ridden for over six months, and suffered greatly during that period. They were aged respectively 72 years; natives of County Derry, Ireland, resided in Hinchinbrooke for over 40 years, and left a large circle of friends to mourn their bereavement. Their remains were interred in the new cemetery at Huntingdon. Daniel Boyd, Esq.,of Huntingdon, also has the sympathy of his many friends, in the loss by death, of an estimable daughter, on Feb 25th, aged 18 years. Her funeral was largely attended on Friday last. James D., son of David Elder of Huntingdon, aged 25 years, succumbed to that terrible disease, consumption, on Wednesday of last week. He had been a great sufferer for several years. Info - Messrs John Haire, John Barlow, M. Leahy, Wm. Lindsay, Wm. Gordon, Wallace Manning and Wm. Cain, jr., all of Franklin, left last Monday morning for Colorado. Info - Mr. Alex. Riach of Hamilton, Ont., formerly of Fertile Creek, S. Georgetown, in a letter to us...... Died - At Franklin on the 26th ult., Lothrop Lovejoy, aged 81 years. Died - At Ormstown on the 28th ult., Lorannie? Mennie, relict of the late Francis St Louis, aged 80 years. Died - In Hemmingford on Feby 25th, Alexandrina Pericilla, second daughter of Antoine Roberts, J.P., and beloved wife of William Turnbull, aged 23 years and 6 months. March 11, 1880 Married - At Malone, N.Y., by the Rev. C. H. Gayle, Mr. Wm. Poole, of Rockburn, to Miss Sarah English of Huntingdon, P.Q., and formerly of Durham, Ormstown. Died - In Montreal on Saturday the 6th inst., Sarah McKeggin, relict of the late David Heenan, aged 84 years. Note: We are indeed sorry to hear of the death departure of this venerable and much respected woman, with whom we have been personally acquainted for many years. About the year 1825 or 1827, she emigrated from Ireland to Canada, and shortly afterwards, with her husband settled in the English River District in what is now known as the Scotch concession and was one of the first few settlers in that part of the country at that time. The place was a complete wilderness then and many and severe were the hardships and trials that had then to be endured. Her husband died several years ago and sometime afterwards she removed to the village of St Jean Chrysostome, and resided there for some time. Latterly she has been living in Montreal with her daughter, where she has found a comfortable home in her old age. Died - At Durham, Ormstown, in the 73rd year of his age, William Morrison, Sen, a native of Perthshire, Scotland. Mr. Morrison emigrated to the United States about the year 1825 and for two or three years resided in the State of Pennsylvania; immediately after which he removed to this neighbourhood and took up the farm on which, until the time of his departure, he had continued to reside. He too, like all of the first settlers of that period, had his own share of the stern experience of the forest life. Subsequently in the loss of family, he experienced a still greater amount of the bitter ills of life. Two of his family died in early years. About 15 years ago, one of his daughters in the bloom of life also passed away. In May 1873, a son, a promising young man, followed, and in July of the same year, a daughter in the full vigor of womanhood, another on the 25th of May, 1875, on the anniversary of her 25th birthday; then his wife in October 1875, and another daughter in December 1877; and at length, on the 4th day of March 1880, he passed away himself to the World of Spirits, to join in happy union with those of his household who had gone before. The survivors of his family are Peter, who resides in Lisbon, Illinois, William, his youngest son, and Mrs. Robert Lockerby, both of whom reside in this village. March 18, 1880 Info - Mr John McMullen, of Jamestown, accompanied by his wife, has sold out their farm and stock, and removes this week to Lindsay, Ont., where they purpose establishing a permanent residence. Info - Mr William Coulter and Mr John Coulter with their families leave this week En route for the Turtle Mountains, Manitoba, where they have purchased lands, and where several of their family and relatives are already residents of the Country. Married - On the 9th March, at the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev. C. M. Mackeracher, William Greig, of the Parish of Ste Martine, to Albina, second daughter of William Metcalfe, of English River. Died - On the 5th of March, at St. Remi, near Beech Ridge, of consumption, John S., second son of Mr. Isaac Barbor, in the 20th year of his age. April 1, 1880 Died - Suddenly, at Jamestown, on Monday the 27th inst, Jane Finn, wife of William Kerney, and eldest daughter of the late Patrick Finn, in the 46th year of her age. April 8, 1880 Birth - At Durham, Ormstown, April 5th, 1880, the wife of John W. Lockerby, of a daughter. Married - In Montreal, March 30th, by the Rev. Robert Campbell, Joseph S. Mason, of Sheldon, Illinois, formerly of Rawdon, P.Q., to Bella McEwen of Dewittville. April 15, 1880 Birth - At Howick, on April 11th, the wife of Robert Maw, of a daughter. Married - In Durham village, Ormstown, on the 11th inst. by the Rev. Father Thibodeau, Mr. Aurace Bourden to Miss Mary Catherine, second daughter of Louis Prejent, Esq., of the Dominion House, Durham. Died - In Jefferson's hotel, New York City on the 17th Feb., John F. McLean, aged 40 years, a native of Glasgow, formerly printer in this office. Died - In Toronto, on the morning of the 7th inst., after a lingering illness, Margaret Kilgour, beloved wife of D. M. Livingston, and daughter of William Kilgour, Beauharnois, P.Q. Died - At Valleyfield, on Sunday the 11th inst., Cornelia Schyler, wife of Alexander Anderson, aged 44 years. Note: The deceased, about two years ago, was seized with paralysis, from which to a great degree, she recovered. On Monday the 5th inst., she was again prostrated by another attack, from which she never rallied, being most of the time in a sort of semi-conscious condition-eventually resulting fatally. She was a daughter of S. H. Schuyler of Huntingdon. She leaves a kind husband and many friends to mourn her departure. Died - In Durham village, on Monday the 12th April, Jessie, second daughter of Mr. James Bispass????, aged 3(or 8) years. Died - Suddenly, on the 5th April, of ???, at Beech Ridge, County of Chateauguay, Spada??? Francis, aged 50 years and ???, beloved wife of George Hope. Note: Mrs. Hope was a daughter of Benjamin Francis, one of the first British settlers at Beech Ridge, and cousin of H. Francis, hardware merchant of Montreal. She emigrated to this County from the North of Ireland with her parents while quite young. Subsequently she was married to Mr. George Hope, uncle of James Hope, the celebrated American Artist. Mr. Hope survives her and is, we believe, the only remaining one of the first settlers of Beech Ridge. Died - In the city of Baltimore, Maryland, March 1880, Edah, aged 2 years and 7 months, youngest and beloved daughter of Dr. L. M. Eastman. April 22, 1880 Info - James Cavers left on Wednesday for Manitoba, and others are also preparing to leave for that Land of Promise . Died - At Godmanchester, Huntingdon County on April the 6th, Mr. Matthew Tannahill in the 78th year of his age passed away to the world of spirits. The deceased was a nephew of Tannahill the poet, one of Scotland's sweetest song makers; among whose beautiful productions was Jessie the dower of Dumblane & Gloomy winter's moo awa . Info - Last Monday morning five teams laden with furniture, implements, etc, for Mr. Charles Strachan left Durham for St. Dominique where the material will be shipped for Manitoba. Mr. Strachan and family leave Thursday en route for that country. April 29, 1880 Married - At Hogansburgh, on the 14th inst., Mr. James Dempsey, formerly a resident of Durham, but now of Fort Covington, to Miss Elizabeth Casey of that town. Died - At Jamestown, on Friday the 23rd day of April, Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. Patrick Cavanagh, aged 21 years. Died - At Hemmingford, on the 17th inst., of heart disease, Anna Victoria, eldest daughter of the Rev. James Patterson, Presbyterian Minister of that place, aged 16 years. Died - At Hinchinbrook, on Sunday morning, 25 inst., of apoplexy, Agnes Emberson, relict of the late Thomas Eaton, in the 81st year of her age. Died - At Huntingdon, Quebec, on the 24th April, Mr. John Booth, aged 32 years, cousin of Rev. George Booth, and grandson of the late Richard Booth, Esq., of Iron Grange, County Wicklow, Ireland, also cousin of the Rev. O. J. Booth, of St Johns, Que. Died - On the morning of the 23rd of April, after a short illness, Elspeth McFarlane, beloved wife of Mr. James Angel and youngest daughter of Daniel McFarlane, Sen., English River. Died - At Norton Creek, on the 5th inst., Mary Bretten, relict of the late George Wheatly, aged 70 years. Mrs. Wheatly and her husband, when newly married, emigrated from England to Canada, about the year 1828 or 1830; and shortly afterwards settled at Norton Creek, Chateauguay County. The flouring mills at that place were built by the Seignor during 1828 and 1829. Mr Wheatly, being a miller, succeeded in being placed in charge of the Mills, in which situation he continued for many years, until at length he became proprietor of them. He also erected two saw mills on the Norton Creek, and for several years did a flourishing business. Some three or four years ago he died, leaving several of a family. May 6, 1880 Birth - In Durham, on the 2nd inst., Mrs Charles Gale of a daughter. Married - In St Henri, at the residence of the bride's brother-in-law, on the 29th April, by the Rev. J. Serimger, M.A., Alexander Weir, of St Henri, to Janet Brown, fourth daughter of A. C. Brown, Esq., South Georgetown, Chateauguay County. Died - At Hinchinbrook on the 30th ult., Mr William Dawson, late of Castle Dawson, County of Derry, Ireland, aged 55 years. Died - At Franklin, on the 4th inst., Rev Wm Ferguson, M.A., in the 77th year of his age. A native of Aberdeen, Scotland. Died - At Jamestown, on the 27th of April, Alexander McMullan, father of John McMullan, late of Jamestown, now of Lindsay, Ont., aged 81 years. Died - At Australia concession, English River, on Wednesday 28th of April, Catherine Henderson, beloved wife of James Craig, aged 48 years. May 13, 1880 Married - At Harper's Ferry, Iowa, April 13, Mr Edward Foley to Miss Annie Fitzgerald, second eldest daughter of Michael Fitzgerald, formerly of Jamestown. Married - In the Elgin Manse, on the 28th ult., by the Rev John J Casey, Robert Smaill of Elgin, to Janet, daughter of John Carr of Godmanchester. May 20, 1880 Birth - At Ormstown, on May 12th, the wife of James Donaldson of a son. Birth - At Ormstown, on May 15th, the wife of James McWhinnie jr of a son. Married - At the Manse, South Georgetown, by the Rev Dr Muir, on Tuesday 18th inst., Mr J J Lockerby of Montreal, to Miss Mary Jane Pyke, only daughter of Mr Joseph Pyke of Jamestown, Chateauguay County. Died - At Ormstown, on Sunday the 2nd inst., after a painful and suffering life of eighteen years, John Hooker, third son of Edwin and Agnes Hooker, aged eighteen years, three months and twenty five days. Married - At the residence of the bride's father, by the Rev Dr Muir, on Tuesday 18th inst, Mr J J Lockerby, Gilder, of Montreal, to Miss Mary Jane Pyke, only daughter of Mr John Pyke of Jamestown Chateauguay County. June 3, 1880 Died - We regret to hear of the death of Mr James Robb of Godmanchester, near Huntingdon. He was one of the early settlers of that part of country. Died - At Huntingdon, May 24th, 1880, of diphtheria-croup, John, beloved son of Mr John Tennant, aged 4 years and 7 days. June 17, 1880 Birth - At Valleyfield, on June 6th, 1880, the wife of Mr Adam McVicker of a son. Married - At St Andrew's Church, Montreal, on Wednesday the 2nd June, by the Rev Gavin Lang, Thomas Logan, South Georgetown, P.Q., to Jane, fifth daughter of the late David Forrester, Lapigeoniere, P.Q. Died - At Ormstown, on the 14th of June, of consumption, Emma May, only and beloved daughter of Charles McKay, aged 6 years. Died - On Friday, June 11th, at Beauharnois, Sarah Minnie, relict of the late J W Roberts of Belle Riviere, aged 81. Died - At the Manse, South Georgetown, on the 13th last, Agnes Anne, daughter of the Rev. J. C. Muir, D.D. Died - On the 8th June, James Leslie Starnes, aged 30 years, eldest son of the Hon. Henry Starnes. June 24, 1880 Info - Alexander, son of Mr James Bryson, formerly of Allan's Corners, has been for several years an officer on board of one of the largest steamers on the Anchor Line, plying on the Mississippi between New Orleans and Memphis....... July 8, 1880 Birth - In Montreal on the 3rd inst, Mrs Archibald M Wright of a daughter. Birth - At Frontier, Hemmingford on the 30th ult, the wife of Arthur Roberts of a son. Died - At English River on the 10th inst, Mrs Catherine McArthur, widow of the late Alexander McArthur, aged 84 years. Died - At North Georgetown, on June 25th, Catherine Campbell, beloved wife of Mr Alexander Reeves, aged 57 years. Died - At Frontier, Hemmingford on the 30th ult, Margaret Morgan, beloved wife of Arthur Roberts, Esq, aged 32 years and 8 months. It is with deep feelings of sorrow that we hear of the sudden death of Mrs Roberts of Hemmingford, second daughter of John Morgan, Esq, under such painful circumstances, she having left a child not 24 hours old, along with two other children. The community warmly sympathizes with Mr Roberts, he having lost a sister under similar circumstances about four months ago; also with Mr and Mrs John Morgan, who have recently had to mourn the loss of their youngest son, a much esteemed young man. July 15, 1880 Info - Mr Andrew R Stewart, formerly of Durham but for several years a resident of Colborne, Ont, has returned and bought from James McCanse his blacksmith shop, etc and has this week resumed his business in this village. Died - On Sunday the 4th inst, one of the oldest residents of the District died at Huntingdon, named Joseph Thompson. He was of pure African descent, born on the Mohawk river, N.Y. in the year 1785. When about 15 years of age, he settled down among the Indians at Caughnawaga, and for several years roamed the forest with that tribe. He was present at the battle of the Chateauguay, with the Indians who so nobly fought that day under the command of Col. De Salaberry. Fifteen years after that event he settled down at Bowron's village, now Huntingdon, at which place until the time of his death he has since continued to reside. Age 95 years. Died - At Annstown, Chateauguay River (near Muir's Church) Daniel McDougall, a native of Johnston, Renfrewshire, Scotland, aged 84 years. Died - In Franklin, Que, July 8th, Roxana Adams, beloved wife of Captain Moses Rowe in the 55th year of her age. Died - At Ormstown, on July 12th, Neil Campbell, Sen., in the 71st year of his age. Note - Mr Campbell was a native of Argylshire, Scotland, and immigrated with his parents to Canada in the year 1819, and shortly after their arrival, settled in North Georgetown, Chateauguay. Mrs Foster had attained the ripe age of eighty-five years, and was possessed of remarkable vigour until within a few months of her death. Poor old Black Joe , alias Joseph Johnston, the genial hostler at Mrs Young's hotel, Franklin Centre, for nigh on three score years, has at last been called on to pass in his checks having departed this life on the 14th, at the ripe old age of about ninety years. Joe was one of the institutions of old Russelltown, - now Franklin, and his final departure will recall many a skylark and good time generally to the boys of that region of forty years ago. Of his early life and parentage, the writer, who has been intimate with him since infancy, early fifty years, never learned. It strikes him tho' that the deceased was in some way attached to the British service during the war of 1812. December 9, 1880 December 16, 1880 Died - The sad news reaches us that Paschal Smith, formerly of Huntingdon, and well known to many of our citizens, committed suicide by drowning off the Marseilles coast in France, some two weeks ago. Mr Smith had been insane for some time. He left an asylum in Minnesota last spring, and accompanied by his wife and son has since been travelling in Europe. Mrs Smith is a daughter of the late Joseph Holbrook of Trout River. Mr Smith's residence was St Paul, Minn. He leaves quite a large property. The victim was an aged widower named James Downie. March 10, 1881 Died - Death has been very busy in certain sections recently. Two sad and sudden cases occurred near Herdman's Corners, on the 27th and 28th ult. The victims were Henry, son of Mr Wm Herdman, a highly respected young man, aged 27 years; and James Gamble jr, also a highly respected young man of 28 years. The deceased resided on adjoining farms. Robert Douglas Esq, an old and respected resident of New Ireland, Godmanchester also departed this life on the 20th. Deceased came from Scotland in 1820 and was a resident of the district from that time till the time of her death. March 17, 1881 Died - A very sudden death occurred in Huntingdon on Friday last. Mr James Gamble, an old and highly respected resident of Hinchinbrook, near Herdman's Corners, father of the young man, James Gamble, whose death from diptheria we announced last week, left his home on the day mentioned and went to Huntingdon, with a view of settling up some affairs of his deceased son. Upon reaching the village, he went to the residence of his son Thomas where, after warming himself, he put on his overcoat and muffler, and started to call on a Notary, but as he reached the doorstep, he fell and expired in a few moments. Deceased was about sixty-six years of age, and a stout, healthy man, was one of the oldest residents in his section of the township. Died - On Tuesday of last week, there died at his residence, first concession Hinchinbrook, Mr Charles McHardy, at the ripe old age of eighty-nine years. Deceased was a native of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, a blacksmith by trade; came to Canada in 1822, resided in Montreal for two years, then removed to Huntingdon and assisted in the first mill erected there by the late William Bouron (sic). After that, he settled in Hinchinbrook where he had resided up to the time of his death. But two children, son and daughter, survive him. Died - On Thursday, the 17th ult, Christiana Craik, wife of William Clegg, formerly of Elgin, Huntingdon County, PQ, but lately of Manitoba after a long illness endured with patience and fortitude. She was buried in the graveyard of Nelsonville. Died - Mrs Joseph Scriver, an old and highly respected resident of Elgin, died very suddenly on Tuesday evening last week. June 9, 1881 Married - On the 19th May, at La Grand, Union Co, Oregon at the residence of the bride's mother, by the Rev Mr Eads, Wesleyan, Mr George Younie, formerly of Ormstown, to Miss Florence C Nessly of the former place. Info - Daniel McKeegan has returned from Minnesota - disappointed. Info - Mr Jas McGerrigle, merchant of this village, has decided upon going to Manitoba. June 16, 1881 Birth - In Montreal, on the 13th inst, the wife of Joseph Wallace, of a son. Info - On Monday the 13th inst, a birthday party was given by Col McEachern and his lady at their residence to Martha Matilda, eldest daughter of Geo Phillips, merchant, of Valleyfield, on her eighth birthday. June 23, 1881 Married - At the residence of the bride's father, on the 15th of June, by the Rev C Mackeracher, William, son of James Kerr, Fertile Creek, to Janet, eldest daughter of James Sinton, of St Louis de Gonzague. Died - In Durham village, on Monday 20th inst, John Ernest Samuel, second son of the Rev Mr Holmes, pastor of the M E Church, aged about 4 years 6 months, having been born in East Bolton, in the Eastern Townships on Christmas Eve, 1876. Married - At the residence of the bride's father, June 15th, by the Rev Mr Sutton, Henry A Bean, of St Jacques to Agnes, youngest daughter of Anthony Smail, Esq, of St Remi, PQ. Info - Rev Mr Holmes and family left here yesterday on a visit to friends in Cornwall; after remaining a few days he takes the train to Madoc, Ont where his father resides and with whom he intends to remain for a week or two. July 7, 1881 Died - On the 25th ult, in the 4th con of North Georgetown, Colin McMillan, aged 52 years. July 21, 1881 Married - At the residence of the bride's father, on the 6th of July by the Rev C M Mackeracher, William H Young to Sarah, daughter of William Baird, all of the parish of St Louis de Gonzague. Died - On the 10th inst, at South Georgetown, Elizabeth Ogilvie, eldest daughter of Archibald Ogilvie, Esq. Died - At Howick, PQ, on the 8th July, 1881, after a long and painful illness, borne with christian resignation, James Maw, aged 36 years and one month. Died - At the manse, South Georgetown on Saturday July 9th, 1881, Rev James C Muir, DD, aged 83 years. Note:The reverend Dr Muir, so long and popularly known, was a native of Dumfries, Scotland, emigrated to Canada in 1835 and was inducted into the Presbyterian Church of South Georgetown in the following year, where until the time of his departure he has been pastor of the Congregation. In 1840 he was united in marriage to Jacobina Nicholson, a sister of the late Kutosoft Nicholson. July 28, 1881 Birth - In the Upper Concession of Ormstown, on the 21st inst, the wife of Thomas Sadler, of a daughter. Died - At St Louis de Gonzague, PQ, John Somerville, aged 2 years and 19 days, youngest son of James Walker, confectioner of Montreal. Died - At the fourth concession North Georgetown on July 22nd 1881, Janet McCaig, relict of the late Angus Menish, aged 72 years. The deceased was a native of Argylshire, Scotland and emigrated to this country in 1832, and in the same year with her husband settled in North Georgetown in which place until the time of her death she has continued to reside. Died - On Monday last the body of a respectably dressed man about 35 years of age was found floating in the Beauharnois Canal. The body has been identified as that of G L Dowker, who has been for some years employed in the fuel department of the Grand Trunk Railway Co. It appears that he had thrown himself off the steamer he was on, his mind at the time being partially deranged by sunstroke. August 4, 1881 Birth - At South Georgetown, on July 17th, the wife of Mr James Steel, of a daughter. August 11, 1881 Died - At South Georgetown, on Sunday August 7th, May Segal???, daughter of the late Alex Steel, aged 55 years. Died - At English River, Chateauguay Co, on Saturday, August 6th, David McClenaghan, father of Geo McClenaghan of Howick, aged 87 years. Died - At Franklin, Huntingdon County, August 4th, after a short illness, Mary Martin, wife of William Brooks, sr aged 79 years. The deceased was a resident of Franklin during the past 43 years, being among the first of the British settlers of the place. She leaves behind her a loving husband, three sons and five daughters. Died - We regret to hear of the sudden death departure of Mrs Andrew Swanston of St Louis on Monday last. The deceased was a daughter of the late Alexander Macdonald of North Georgetown. GONE TO MANITOBA - Mrs Palliser and her daughter left yesterday for Manitoba where they will join Mr Thomas Palliser who is doing well in the new country. Mr Palliser was formerly a resident of Durham where he carried on the blacksmithing business for some years. Died - At St Louis de Gonzague, on the 8th inst, after a severe illness which she bore with Christian resignation, Isabella Lawrence, beloved wife of Mr Andrew Swanston, aged 29 years. August 25, 1881 Died - At English River on the 12th inst, Margaret, beloved wife of Peter Campbell and daughter of John Currie, senior. Married - At the residence of the father of the bride, August 22nd, by the Rev C M Mackeracher, George Swanston of St Louis de Gonzague, County of Beauharnois to Catherine, third daughter of Alexander McGarth of North Georgetown, County of Chateauguay. Married - At the residence of the bride's father, St Louis de Gonzague, on the 24th inst, by the Rev D W Morison, BA, Angus McIntyre of Montreal to Bessie Forester, daughter of Mr Thos Bickerdike. Died - At Norton Creek, on the 21st inst, James Easton, jr, aged 36 years and 8 months. September 8, 1881 Married - At the residence of the bride's father, on the 21st ult, by the Rev C Mackeracher, William Hay of Howick to Isabella, daughter of Robert McLeod of English River. Info - Wm Gardiner of Athelstan will take possession of his big farm at Lower Lachine the first of October. William will be muchly missed in Athelstan. Info - Robt Lamont has left Athelstan for good, and taken up his abode in Montpelier, Vt. September 15, 1881 Died - And still another of our old landmarks has been removed. On Thursday afternoon of last week, Col Archibald Henderson, of Huntingdon, quietly passed away. Mr Henderson was born in Montreal in 1801. In 1829, he came to Huntingdon County, making the Township of Godmanchester his home. He leaves behind him a sorrowing wife and several affectionate sons and daughters. Died - Mr John Graham, an old and respected resident of the first concession, Elgin, died on the 6th inst. His age was eighty-one years and he had resided upon the farm on which he died fifty two years. Mr Graham was a native of Lanarkshire, Scotland. A second wife survives him as also a large family of sons and daughters. September 22, 1881 Married - On the 14th instant, at the residence of the bride's mother, Oakland, St Andrews', Q, by the Moderator of the Presbytery of Montreal, the Rev D Paterson, MA, assisted by the Rev J Fleck, the Rev D W Morison, BA, Ormstown to Anna Letitia, second daughter of the late Charles Wales, Esq, St Andrews. Info - Mr and Mrs John Seely of Elgin, should they be spared, will celebrate their golden wedding on the 6th of October next. Info - Mr & Mrs Robert Ross, who for some time past have been visiting their friends in and around Durham, left for their home in Sheldon, Ill, on Monday last. October 6, 1881 October 13, 1881 Died - The Late Alex Anderson Esq-The death of this estimable gentleman took place at his residence in Valleyfield on Sunday afternoon, October 9th. The deceased was the eldest son of the late Laird Anderson of Huntingdon and nephew of the late Dr Anderson of Ormstown. Cut off suddenly in the prime of manhood, at the early age of forty-six, his demise has created a blank which can never be filled. Married - In Montreal, on the 11th inst by the Rev A B Mackay, Alexander Campbell to Isabella Catherine Wright, all of St Louis de Gonzague, Que. Married - At Chateauguay, NY, on the 8th inst, by the Rev A Fredericks, Mr Michael McWhinnie of Ormstown to Miss Lizzie A Sheets of Huntingdon. Married - In St Matthews church, Edwardstown, parish of St Chrysostome, on Wednesday the 28th inst, by the father of the bride assisted by the Rev James Fulton, MA, Rural Dean, the Rev Clement D Brown, BA, incumbent of Shigawake, Baie de Chaleur, to Julia Eliza, eldest daughter of the Rev E G Sutton. Died - At Valleyfield, on Sunday Oct 9th, Alexander Anderson, aged 46 years, eldest son of the late Laird Anderson of Huntingdon. Died - At St Louis de Gonzague, on the 2nd inst, Martha, youngest daughter of William Sangster, aged 6 years and 5 days. Died - At Essex Centre, Ont, on the 28th Sept, after a short illness, of dissentry and inflamation of the bowels, James Stacey, aged 30 years, eldest son of Mr William Stacey of Holton's Corners, Beech Ridge. He leaves a dear wife to mourn his loss with many relatives and friends. October 20, 1881 Died - At Jamestown, Co Chateauguay, on the 13th inst, after a few hours of illness, Elizabeth, fifth and youngest daughter of Charles McDonald, in her seventeenth year. Info - Mr Alex Blain, who has for nearly two years been a resident of Emerson, Manitoba, is now on a visit to his friends in this village. October 27, 1881 Died - At Jamestown on the 24th inst, Janet Burnet, relict of the late John Rodgers, aged 77 years. Died - At Hinchinbrook, on the 16th inst, of inflammation of the lungs, Isabella Sproulle, relict of the late Jas Coulter, aged 73 years, 3 months and 22 days. Deceased was a native of the County Sligo, Ireland. Info - Rev Peter T Rowe, of the Diocese of Algoma, is visiting his relatives in Franklin. Info - The golden wedding of Mr and Mrs John Seely of Elgin on the 6th of this month was a splendid affair. Married - By the Rev John Holmes, at the Methodist Parsonage, Durham, Nov 9th, Thomas Somerville to Sarah McWhinnie, daughter of Mr Wm McWhinnie of Ormstown. Died - At Chateauguay Basin, on Nov 5th, 1881, Andrew Watt, aged 71 years. Died - At Australia concession, English River, on the 24th Oct, Janet Gorrie, beloved wife of Alexander McFarlane, aged 83 years, a native of Perthshire, Scotland. November 17, 1881 Info - Messrs Alex Blain and Andrew Walsh left here last Monday morning on their return to Manitoba. Died - We are indeed sorry to learn that three cousins of Mr John Donaldson of Ormstown have lost their lives in the great disaster on the coast of Berwickshire, Scotland. November 24, 1881 Birth - On the Ridge Road, township of Hinchinbrook, Nov 17th, the wife of Samuel Boyd, Esq of a son. Married - At the residence of the bride's mother, Havelock, on the 10th inst, by the Rev Mr Livingston, J H Dodds of Montreal to Sarah, eldest daughter of the late James Whiteside of St Chrysostome. Died - At Ormstown, on Monday evening the 21st inst, Mrs James Corrigan aged 73 years. Info - Mr Robert McFarlane, for the last three years a resident in the north-west is visiting his relatives and friends in Hinchinbrook. Info - We observe by American papers that Dr John G Boyd, son of the late Alex Boyd of Hinchinbrook, at the recent election in the state of New York, was elected a State Senator for one of the senatorial districts in New York city. As most of our readers are aware, Mr B has been permanently located in New York for quite a few years. Died - At Ormstown on Saturday the 26th inst (sic), Mary Jane, eldest daughter of Geo Elliot, Esq, and wife of Mr Jamieson. December 8, 1881 Married - In San Francisco, on the 20(9?)th Nov 1881, Mr Robert N Oliver, formerly of Dewittville, to Miss Lucy A Jennings of Morey, Nye County, Nevada. December 15, 1881 Died - We regret to learn that about three weeks ago, near Leadville, Colorado, Arthur, son of James McCurry of the first concession of Hinchinbrook, was fatally crushed under a falling wall. He was taken out alive but died a few hours later. Arthur was 22 years of age, and in company with two other brothers went to Leadville something over a year ago. Birth - At Beauharnois, on Dec 1st, the wife of Israel Lemay, St Lawrence Hotel, of a daughter. Died - At Ormstown on the 10th inst, Donald McEwen, a native of Perthshire, Scotland aged 88 years.
