The Chateauguay Valley Historical Society is an active association formed in 1961 for the purpose of encouraging education, research and conservation of the history of the Southwestern Quebec region. It is a bicultural organization operating in a bilingual part of the country and their activities reflect this duality. They hold regular meetings during the year featuring historic topics of local interest. As well, since 1968, they have published an annual journal of articles reflecting a wide range of topics concerning local history of the valley. For a look at the range of articles published in the annual Journal, see the attached Index by Year and Index by Subject. They support the distribution of other publications of local history by local authors and have published reprints of the second edition local history book by Robert Sellar, "The History of the County of Huntingdon and of the Seigniories of Chateauguay & Beauharnois".
The Society has set up a regional archive in Huntingdon open to the public by appointment. This will allow better protection for the voluminous material that has been collected over the years and allow better public access to this material. In the spring of 2008, there has been a project started to document the Archive collection of both the CVHS and the St-Anicet Historical Society collections. You can download an index of the CVHS collection (2.09MB) or an index of the St-Anicet collection (800KB in french). Both are in .PDF format. If you cannot read a .PDF file, you can get the Acrobat Reader from Adobe. Warning: it is a BIG 50MB file to download if you have a slow internet connection.
The society is open to all persons interested in the history of the Chateauguay Valley. All paid-up members have the right to vote at the annual general meeting and to receive a number of newsletters each year. All events are open to the public.
The Annual Journal is published each year, usually in time for the Ormstown Fair in early June and is now included in the basic membership package. The annual will be mailed to outofregion members as soon as it is available. To save on mailing costs, local members are asked to pickup their copy at Ormstown Fair or any of the summer events that the society attends. Copies not picked up by the end of summer will be mailed. Extra copies are available to anyone for $20Cdn + mailing.
