My greatgrandfather was Samuel Serrett who I think was born in Arnett,Va(wv) and later lived in Augusta and Rockbridge Co. Va. He was married to Serena (Rena) Hanger Serrett.
My grandmother was Bessie Bell Serrett Batman. Bessie had one brother, Charles Eliza, five sisters,Ola Virginia, Sally, Nellie E.,Margaret M.,Hattie May and S. Samuel and Serena raised one of their grandsons,Jacob(Jake) child of Bessie Bell's before marriage.
Samuel and Surrenah (as it is spelled on the tombstone) are buried at St. John's Luthern-German Reformed Church Cemetery near Middlebrook, [Augusta Co.] Va.
The present church is a United Church of Christ.
Although the birth date of Samuel is different on the tombstone than the information from arnett West Virginia and the middle initial is also different on the tombstone I believe they are the same person . They also raised a son of their daughter Sally---all I know is that his name was Russell Serrett---I have not been able to find any information about him. I would appreciate any information you have on this family!!!!!!

The Samuel Serrett that was my great grandfather lived in Rockbridge and Augusta County Virginia.
I believe he was born to William and Lucy Ann Wills Sarrett in Arnett,Va.(wv) in 1858 although his tombstone says 1851.
Samuel Serrett is buried along side his wife Serena spelled--Surrenah-- on the tombstone in Middlebrook, [Augusta Co., ] Va. They both died in 1936.
Their son Charles Eliza is buried close by--he was born February 23,1893 and died November 4,1904 of diptheria.
I have never heard of a Edward Serratt who they have listed from the Sarratt/Sarrett/Surratt Families of America.
Samuel and Serena were married September 30,1877 and their
first child, Ola Virginia was born November24, 1879 she married Walter Alexander Hall October 27,1905. Samuel and Serena's
second child was my grandmother Bessie Bell Serrett who was born April 23,1883 and died April 12,1958. She married Boyd Commore Batman on September 28, 1909. They are buried at Mt. View Mennonite Church Cemetery,Lyndhurst,Va. Samuel and Serena raised Jake Preston Serrett who was Bessie Bell Serrett's son, before marriage. Samuel's
third child was Sally Serrett who was born in 1884 in Augusta Co. Va. Ihave always been told that she never married although she had a child- Russell Serrett who lived with Samuel and Serena until he was 19 years old. Sally lived in New York. The
fourth child was Nellie E. Serrett who was born December 8, 1889 and died December 28,1970. She married Walter Wilbert Sensabaugh June 10,1913.
Charles Eliza Serrett was the fifth child, mentioned above. The
sixth child was Margaret M.Serrett who was born September 22,1890 and died February 25,1969. She married Harry Hunter Sensabaugh, a brother to Walter. They are buried at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery ,Rockbridge Co. Va. Next
seventh child is Hattie May Serrett born May 3, 1898 and died October 1977. She married Charles Conner.
I believe Samuel's middle name was Fortner instead of the initial M on his tombstone.
The 1860 Raliegh Co. Va(WV) says Samuel F. 2 YEARS OLD. The Riverhead, Augusta Co. Va. 1900 Census says Samuel F. 42 years old and the 1910 Rockbridge,Va. Census says Samuel F. 52 years old.
Serena's parents were David O. Hanger and Elizabeth Cale Hanger from Augusta Co. Va. I hope I have helped you!!! Please keep me informed. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!
Thanks [email protected]

You have only listed 7 Children? Our record show they had 9 Children!

Paul,
I do not know who the Edward Serrett is that you have listed as Samuel and Serena's first child. They only had one son Charles Elzia Serrett. They adopted my grandmother's (Bessie) son, Jake Preston Serrett(Pete). They had six girls and one boy and raised Pete. That would be the eighth child.
Sallie A. Serrett was born December 10,1884 and died May 1967. She was married to Patrick McLaughlin.
I found Samuel Serrett's obituary and it listed Sallie as Sallie McLaughlin from New York. Sandra, [email protected]
Sandra,
Your Grandmother Serena (Hanger) SERRETT, had 9 Children 2 died young.
She also adopted & raised 3 "Out-of-Wedlock" Grandsons,
Pete SERRETT, b. 11 Mar 1903, Son of Bessie Belle SARRETT, when she was age 19yrs, 10mth & 18days

My great - grandparents were Samuel F. Serrett and Surrenah Hanger Serrett from Walkers Creek Rockbridge County Virginia.
My Grandmother was Nellie (Serrett) Sensabaugh. My Dad was raised by his Grandmother Surrenah (Rena) Serrett for several years after his birth, because my Grandmother was not married to my Grandfather yet.
We were pretty sure that Walter Sensabaugh was his Father, but my Dad never changed his name after Nellie and Walter married.
I think somewhere down the family tree my Mom and Dad were cousins - there seemed to be a lot of that going on up in the hills of Virginia, because my Aunt Evelyn Sensabaugh married one of her cousins also (Emmett Sensabaugh).
My Dad was an only child and my Mom was one of nine from her family. My Dad, Carl Serrett, was born in 1911 and died in 1981.
I know very little about the relatives on his side of the family. Both sets of Grandparents were farmers in Rockbridge County VA. Their farms were sold after both sets of Grandparents died.
My Dad's parents are buried at the Methodist Church near Walkers Creek in Rockbridge County. I have always spelled my maiden name Serrett and now I see lots of other spellings.
My parents lived in Waynesboro VA. My Dad worked in a plant in Waynesboro VA and my Mom was a private duty nurse. I am an only child with only one surviving aunt and lots of cousins. I know the Sensabaugh family came from Germany back in the 1800's.
Where do you fall on the family tree and where do you live?
Thanks for getting back with me.

Thank you so much for the information. I am a Kindergarten teacher nearing the end of the school year. This will be my 38th year teaching with retirement in the next couple of years. I will try to get some photos to you after school is out June 18th. My husband's family is from Connecticut - career Marine family. My husband just retired from Ft. Lee with almost 38 years as a civilian employee. My Dad was born in 1911 - I wonder if the year 1913 was used as an attempt to cover up his real birth year. It sounds like my Grandmother and her sisters were wild in their day! Too much time up in the hills on the farm with nothing to do. My Grandparents lived in a very small farm house with an outhouse and a stream just off the back porch to access water. They heated the house with an old potbelly stove and cooked on a wood stove. I did inherit my Grandmother's genes for not being a good cook. She made the worst sugar cookies for me. We usually made the trip from Waynesboro VA to see both sets of Grandparents almost every Sunday after church. We spent a lot of hot summer days sitting on the porch swing or rocking chairs watching the cows and sheep graze on the hillsides. The older I get, the more I miss those simple days!
Talk to you soon!

thank you for your reply...but the James surrett i was looking for is James A...i recently found him.. b;1795 died 1915 at age 120 ..lived on brushy mountain in Bland Co. Va and was a survivor of the trail of tears. i found this recently and it jives with family legend :
This comes from the book "History of Bland County" which was published by the Bland County Centennial Corporation. The name "James Surrett" does not appear at all; however, this is the article from the book on "Jimmie SURAT" who lived to be 120 years old. Since his birth and death data (1795-1915) and name are so close to your ancestor, I think he must be the one you are researching.
"Perhaps, one of the most colorful, unique and the undisputed oldest citizen ever to reside in Bland County was Jimmy Surat (pronounced Cert). He came to Bland County from one of the Carolinas. He was half Blackfoot Indian and escaped from the tribe while it was being forced, under government supervision, to move from the Carolinas to a reservation in the West. Many of the Indians died during the 2,000 mile march.
He moved to Bland and lived in a cabin on Brushy Mountain, north of a farm that was owned by H. McGinnis, which later became the property of Andrew Muncy. At the time he came to Bland, he was married to a woman whom the oldtimers remembered only as "Aunt Suzie." After the death of "Aunt Suzie" he married "Liz." To this union was bown four children, one boy and three girls. By a former marriage "Liz" had a daughter named "Ol." Her favorite pastime was stealing horses from barns and riding through the woods at night. "Ol" finally left home and spent the rest of her life with Bransom Bullard, who was a former slave purchased from the auction block by Col. John R Compton.
Jimmy Surat died at the estimated age of 120 years. Records indicate that he registered to vote at Bland on 9-15, 1902 and gave his age as "about 90." Jimmy never slept in a bed, always on a pallet in front of the fireplace. He died in 1915. H. McGinnis, Claude Richardson, and Miller Leslie hauled his body off Brushy Mt. in a two-horse wagon. His casket was furnished by Ess Mustard and paid for by the county. "Liz" , his wife, rode on top of the casket from the home to the cemetery. He was buried in the Town Cemetery at Bland."

Re: Elisha Sarratt 1700's birth place France on April 28, 1999
I have a bit to share. I was given some information that says Elisha Sarrette "Duke of Mont Sarrette" b. 1747 in France, sailed and served with LaFayette during the revolutionary war. He returned to France, married, had a son, and then returned with his son to America at the onset of the French Revolution.
It was said that his son was 2 years at the time, however, I have his son's birth rumored to be abt 1770. When they came to America Elish dropped his title and the last "e" on his name and became known as Elisha Sarrett.
The son he brought with him was also named Elisha. They settled in Persons Co. NC. I was also told that Elisa Sr. had another son Willis Sarrett Brn abt 1786 in Person Co. NC. Some of the dates don't match up, but it might help. I also have a descendent list for Elisha. Feel free to e-mail me and see if it helps. I too am looking for more information about the French connection.

My great-great grandmother was "Teeny" Addie Surratt, born in 1858 in Virginia. She married Henry L. Cashatt before 1880, as they were living in Pulaski County for the 1880 census..
I've been told her name was "Teeny", although after her marriage, I've only seen her name as "Addie". I've noticed several individuals show Tenny (male) or Terry (female) Surratt as the child of Daniel and Rhoda (Davis) Surratt of Grayson County, VA.
My great grandfather was born in Grayson County in 1880, so I feel confident Addie was from that area.
I have checked the 1870 census and it shows that "Teany" was the daughter of Daniel and Rhoda Surratt.
Does anyone have any proof that this Teany could be the person I've been looking for?
Any information about her marriage, or anything?
Any definitive information about when her parents may have died, or where they might be buried?

I am looking for LUTHER SURRATT (not sure of the spelling) from Virginia. My mother recently found out that her biological father was named Luther Surratt, was a soldier from Virginia, and was listed as 27 years old at the time of my mother's birth in May 1932. That is the only information I have. We are desperatley trying to find any connection to her paternal side of the family. We don't know anyone. Thank-you' Keri Dietrich [email protected]

I forgot to mention in my last message that my mother's first and middle name are Shirley Laverne. She was given the last name of Rhinehardt at birth, although her father is listed as Luther Sarratt. She was born in a Salvation Army home in Spokane, Washingtion on May 8, 1932. Her mother was probably only there for the pregnancy though. She resided in Montana. We believe she met Luther Sarratt there.

Hi Paul:
I recently came upon your site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~prsjr/families/va/index-va.htm
I research the Sprinkle surname and, as you indicated, the Wythe Co., VA marriage records show that Cynthia SURAT married Napoleon SPRINKLE.
I'm excited to see that you have placed Cynthia as a child of Willis & Sally (Scott) SARRETT of Pearson Co., NC:
I have oodles of information on the descendants of Cynthia & Napoleon, which I would be delighted to share with you. However, even though Cynthia shows up as a Surat in the Wythe Co. marriage records, other information indicates her maiden name was Fry. That's why I'm interested in your sources, rationale, etc.
Actually, I've looked at the original "marriage record" for Cynthia & Napoleon on microfilm. There was no license.!!!!
The Rev. Geo. Painter, a Presbyterian minister, periodically sumitted lists of those he married to the court house.
Napoleon & Cynthia were on one of his list. Thus, the list was composed after the fact.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Margaret,
Thanks for the E-Mail.

Paul,
My name is Troy Stantliff Jr. and I am researching the STANTLIFF Family. I have found in your Vol II, VA Index on rootsweb.com and other rootsweb postings by you, that William I. Sarrett/Surratt was married to an Elizabeth Stantliff, (daughter of Oliver Stantliff and Elizabeth ?).
Your posting has her date of birth as 1814, I show that her brother William was born in 1814, these dates are not as significant to me at this time as finding out more about their children, especially any that might have been born after William P. SARRETT
Do you have any information about William P's marriage and to whom.
I have some sketchy information showing Ambrose Senter marrying Rebecca Leonard dau of William and Elizabeth Surratt on Jan 17, 1885. It is possible, but unlikely that William I. Sarrett and Elizabeth would have had a daughter getting married in 1885 unless the Leonard part of Rebecca's name indicates she had been married previously.
I also have information that Ambrose Senter married again in 1916. Ambrose Senter was the nephew of Elizabeth (Stantliff) Sarrett.
I hope this information is not too rambling but I hope we might be able to help each other in tying some of these people to each other. If there is something you need more clarification on in the above paragraph just let me know.
Thanks, Troy Stantliff, E-Mail: [email protected]

I have recently began to research my SPRINKLE ancestors. Napoleon Sprinkle of Wythe Co, VA, married Cynthia SARRETT.
I always thought she was a Sarrett, but have recently seen her name as Cynthia FRY; do you know if she had married a Fry at some time or not?
Thanks. Audrey, E-Mail: [email protected]

Thanks for the E-Mail Audrey,

Have you ever seen a SPRINKLE researcher's site which has Napoleon Sprinkle listed along with Cynthia and their children?
If not, I will let you know how to find it. This researcher's name is Margaret Sopp.
I have written to her to see how she recently came up with "Fry" for Cynthia; I had never heard it until recently. I recall my grandma Sprinkle telling me once she was related to Sarratt/Sarette/s. Napoleon would have been my gg grandma's brother.

Willis BLANCHETT alias Willis SURRATT

Subject: A curious name similar to Willoughby Blackard
Abstracts of Court Orders of Wythe County Vol III
p20 - 12 Mar 1822
"Willis Blanchett insolvent debtor committed to jail upon an execution sent out in favor of John Craig upon a judgement. Blanchett is discharged because Craig does not reside in the county and has no known agent there in."

p24 - 14 Mar 1822
"Overseers of the poor are to bind out Nancy, Catherine and Ephraim Serratt alias Blanchett, poor children of Willis Serratt, alias Willis Blanchett"

"Serratt alias Blanchett" seems a bizarre twist of a surname to me. There must be a story here. I wonder if this man was dishonest and used an alias for some clandestine reasons. On the other hand, Ephraim is one of the most-common given names in the NC BLANCHARD family, so could Serratt have been the actual alias? Curious.

Thankyou for your prompt reply. I subsequently found all the source info you listed and I am truly amazed at your incredible hard work. Yes, you have my great-grandfather, William Ulysses Surratt.
I have the same picture you show at your site--the one where Uriah Surratt is sitting with his brothers. I am sending your information to my mother, Ruth (Surratt) Shea and her sister, Phyllis Irene (Surratt) Goodrich, who might be able to help with some of the dates.
Another of my aunts, Rachel Theo (Surratt) Bowers is in contact with a Curtis Surratt so I will ask what info they might have.
On my last visit home (Columbus, Ohio), my mother and Aunt Irene gave me a wonderful tintype picture--William Ulysses and his bride, Mary Flemming, on their wedding day.
Oh, by the way, my Aunt Theo remembers her "Grandpa Uly" and wrote about him.
I have lots of pictures of my grandfather, Samuel Irington Surratt and my grandmother, Anna Armbrister Surratt.
I hope all of this can help you in your work. Thanks again for everything you've done.

Hi Paul,
I'm not sure if you're still doing this kind of thing (the page I found this address on was from 2000), but I'm curious about what you may know about Surratts from southwest Virginia.
My family, at least as far back as my grandfather, lived in Wythe Co. VA, and I've been able to find out little other than that my family's name was possibly changed from "Surrett" to Surratt" at some point due to some confusion with another clan. Not sure if this is true, though.
Anyway, any information you have, or tips about where I should start looking would be much appreciated...
Thanks and take care,
David Surratt, E-Mail: [email protected]
David,
Thanks for the E-Mail. If you can give us your Grandfather's name, maybe we can help you "connect" to one of our SFA clans of Wythe Co., VA.

Malinda's maiden name was Dunford. She was from Wythe Co., VA. and she married Joseph Surratt also from Wythe Co., VA.
They had several children one of them my G-G-G- Grandmother Theresa Newell Surratt.
