1st Possible Record Problem!
It has been reported in 1980 by <---
[REF:#90 pg179]
that:
The SURRATTS who moved into
Hot Springs County, Arkansas, manily came from McNairy County, Tennessee.
James SIRATT (spelling on the Arkansas Census) moved to Hot Springs County
before 1870, and it is believed this James SIRATT's father was the
James whose land was divided in McNairy Co., TN. in 1832. His wife was Mary Jane PHILLIPS.
He was born about 1815 in Tenn. and three of his sons:
<---
Nicholas SIRATT,
[ 1st Son, b. 1840, m. Mereland BARTON, 10Ch ].
<---
Jacob F. SIRATT, [ 5th Son, b. 1850, m. Mary M. BROWN, 8Ch ].
<---
James M. SIRATT, [ 4th Son, b. 1848, m. Mary M. INGERSOLL, 10Ch ].
raised large families in this County. (Hot Springs Co., AR.)
|
Laura & Norman Sarratt, has these to "James M. SURRATT" families mixed-up!
The <---
James,5 Madison & Mary Jane (Phillips) SIRRATT,
Family they are refering to above has nothing to do with our "James 'Pappy' Monroe SURRATT, Sr." subject.
Many other records has since 1980, tend to dispute this. ..prs

J.M. "Pappy" SURRATT, moves to St Francis Co., AR.
prior to 1834. (birth of #7. 3rd Son: Levi W.
The Indians had free reign in Arkansas until after the United States
completed negotiations with the French for the Louisiana Purchase
in 1803. With the land in the ownership of United States it was immediately
thrown open for settlement at attractive low prices. The First Commers
moved into the mideast and southeast sections, coming from nearby
Kentucky and Tennessee. What is now Arkansas became part of the Missouri
Territory in 1812. In 1819, when Missouri applied for statehood,
Congress created the Arkansas Territory and included what is now
Oklahoma. St. Francis Co. was formed from Phillips Co. in 1827,
Co. Seat is Forrest City, AR. 72207. On 15 June. 1836 Arkansas
became the 25th. State in the Union. |
St. FRANCIS Co.: |
Is located near the center of the Eastern tier of Counties in Arkansas.
It was created on October 13, 1827, form the larger Phillips Co.

East by Crittenden Co.; on the South by Lee Co.; on the West
by Monroe and Woodruff Counties. St. Francis Co. contains an area
of 615 square mile, or 393,600 acres, and is divided into 10 Municipal
Townships, viz: Griggs, Johnson, Telico, L'Anguille, Blackfish, Franks,
Prairie, Goodwin, Madison and Wheatley. The St. Francis (on the East)
and L'Anguille (on the West side) Rivers cross the Co. from North
to South, dividing it into nearly three equal divisions. The land
lying East of the St. Francis River, is generally level, sloping gradually
toward the Mississippi River. The Central division, is divided by
Crowley's Ridge, which is nearly equidistant between the two Rivers,
having an altitude of 300 feet above sea level. The land West of the
L'Anguille is slightly undulating.

[REF:#90 pg180] writes about "Pappy" 2nd Wife:
Mary HIGGINS was born about 1806 in Alabama. She would have been the correct
age to be the sister of Elizabeth (CARR) SURRATT of McNairy Co., TN. named
in her parents'gift deed along with Mary (CARR) HIGGINS, but at this time
(1980) we have no proof she was the same woman. At any rate, three of her children,
