Hamilton County was established on 25th Oct 1819, out of (576 Sq. Miles) Rhea Co. and the territory Southeast of Rhea & South and East of Bledsoe and Middle Marion Counties. About half of Hamilton County when first formed, and all of this County on the left bank of the Tennessee River, lay within the Territory of the Cherokee Nation. The Indian territory was released by a Treaty signed with the Cherokee on December 29th, 1835. <--- Chattanooga, TN. 37402, became the County Seat in 1870. A County called JAMES was established out of part of Hamilton and other territory, at one time, and organized and existed for many years, but was finally abolished, the territory reverting mostly to Hamilton County. McMinn Co., Tennessee was created on 05th Nov 1819, from (432 Sq. Miles) the larger Cherokee "Hiwassee Purchase" of 27 Feb 1819 and part of "Territory South of Ohio River". The County Seat is <--- Athens, TN. 37303. The Cherokee were living in McMinn County at the time of the arrival of the first Euro-American explorers. The Athens area was situated nearly halfway between the Overhill Cherokee villages of Great Tellico to the north in Monroe County and Great Hiwassee along the Hiwassee River to the south. In 1819, the Cherokee signed the Calhoun Treaty, selling the land north of the Hiwassee (including all of modern McMinn County) to the United States. McMinn County was organized on November 13, 1819 at the home of John Walker in what is now Calhoun. Pumpkintown, located nearest the center of the new county, was chosen as the county seat in 1822 and renamed Athens shortly thereafter. The name "Athens" may have been chosen due to perceived topographical similarities to Athens, Greece. It is located on the East Tennessee Section; Bounded by Roane County, on the North; Loudon County, on the Northeast; Monroe County, on the East; Polk County, on the Southeast; Bradley County, on the Southwest; Meigs County, on the West; (First Census 1830, County Clerk has m. & pro rec from 1879; Circuit & Chancery Courts have Div. records; Reg.
