He was ordained to the work of the Ministry at the age of 47 years, in 1860, taking the Pastoral care of Churches. He was Pastor of Providence, Bethel, Red Bank, Henderson's Springs, Ellijoy, Milkman Grove, Jones's Chapel, Sugar Loaf and Alder Branch, and other Churches. Brother Wm. R. ATCHLEY was considered a successful preacher in his day a preacher of the old type, unlearned in books, but a missionary; and many were converted under his ministry. He was a member of the Adler Branch Church from its organization of 1836, by his Grandfather THOMAS ATCHLEY, until Wm. R. ATCHLEY'S death in 1901." No Census record was recorded for Sevier Co., TN until the 1830 Census, and we have identified WILLIAM R. ATCHLEY, age 17 living with his parents. [REF: 5] The Rev. WILLIAM R. ATCHLEY married a second time on 14 Feb. 1881, Sevier Co., TN; to the 69 year old, twice Widowed FRANCIS "Fannie" (WATERS) HAGGARD SARRETT, she is this writers Great-Great-Grandmother, who lost her 2nd. husband JAMES D. SARRETT, b. 13 Feb. 1819, TN.; died while in the Confederate, Andersonville Prison Stockade, on 04 Sep. 1864; This marriage did not last, as per an Affidavit on 03 March 1891, Fannie (WATERS) HAGGARD SARRETT ATCHLEY stated "We lived together about one year, when he abandoned me. On the 29th of Nov. 1900, the 2nd X-Wife FRANCIS (WATERS) HAGGARD SARRETT ATCHLEY died at the age of 79 years and on the 25th of Feb. 1901, Son WILLIAM D. ATCHLEY, at age 60, prepared and sent a letter to the Federal Pension Commisson, to inform them that she should be taken off the Pension record. 47 His father the elder WILLIAM R. ATCHLEY, died some 4 months later on the 3rd of March 1901, at the age of 87 years, both are buried in the Adler Branch Cemetery. ATCHLEY; b. 1898 Elder G.(ideon) AUGUSTUS ATCHLEY was a Preacher of influence and good standing in the County of Sevier. He was Baptized at the age of [REF: #17 years in 1853, by the Elder C. C. TIPTON and he made a profession of Religion. At the age of 24 years, he marred Miss NANCY C. FOX and the had Eleven Children. He was Ordained to the Ministry at the age of 30 years in 1876. He was the Pastor of several country Churches at small salaries; he also was a farmer and School Teacher. He taught in the Public Schools of Sevier County for many years. His most successful work as a Pastor was with Gist's Creek and Providence Churches, where he went in and out and served faithfully as an under-shepherd for 8 successive years. Brother G. A. ATCHLEY was a Preacher of ability and a life-long Bible student. This was his one textbook, his chief storehouse of knowledge, his main source of information and inspiration for the business of preaching. He had a good knowledge of the Scriptures, and the Word of God to him was the Sword of Spirits, the one and only effective weapon of his warfare. He obeyed the injunction of the Scripture "Do the Work of an Evangelist", and was successful in that work. After the death of his first wife in 1885, the next year 1886, at the age of 50 years Rev. GIDEON A. ATCHLEY married a second time to the young 25 year old (She was 6 months younger than his oldest daughter MALISSA E. ATCHLEY...prs) Miss SARAH JANE LINDSEY; and they had Seven Children, 2 Sons and 5 Daughters. He had a total of 18 Children, 8 Sons and 10 Daughters, he was 62 years old when his last child was born in 1898. He died at his home in Sevier County, on March 10, 1902, at the age of 65 years. He was buried in the Alder Branch Cemetery, services were conducted by the Pastor, Elder DAVID F. MANLY. He was survived by his 2nd. Wife five Daughters and Seven Sons. He also listed that he had "the Measles in April of 1862, and confined in the Hospital in Williamsburgh., KY., which he did not fully recover, and has had a severe cough ever since."
