Click on Thumbnail for Source Info. OBEDIAH SARRATT, first son of ANTHONY SARRATT, married SARAH BONNER, daughter of BRYANT BONNER and ANNIE HARRIS, who lived near Grassy Pond, Spartanburg County, South Carolina.
OBEDIAH and wife settled first upon Sarratt's Creek near Grassy Pond. SARAH, his wife, died there Sept. 24, 1813, aged 48 years, 1 month and 11 days, and was buried there.
After the death of his wife, Sarah "Sally" (BONNER) in 1843 OBEDIAH SARRATT purchased lands in York Co., SC., established a ferry on "Broad River" and followed farming and other industries. He accumulated a considerable amount of lands, negroes and other personal property. He was a very perserving man, with large ideas.
But for the disaster of the Confederacy, a whole county would scarcely have satisfied him in lands. He was an able advocate of the Confederate cause, and much of his means went in that direction. He was very liberal to the poor.
There were born to OBEDIAH and SARAH SARRATT, ten children. These were:
     1. ADALINE,
     2. EMELINE,
     3. MINERVA,
     4. MISSALANY, [Female]
     5. LAWSON,

CONFEDERATE SOUTH CAROLINA TROOPS
5th Regiment, South Carolina Infantry

The 5th Infantry Regiment, assembled during March and April, 1861, contained men recruited in Laruens, Lancaster, Spartanburg, and Union counties. It was ordered to Virginia and, serving in D.R. Jones' Brigade, saw action at First Manassas.
Later it was placed in General R.H. Anderson's, Micah Jenkins', and Bratton's Brigade. It participated in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Fredericksburg, then served in Longstreet's Suffolk operations and with D.H. Hill in North Carolina. Moving again with Longstreet, the unit did not arrive in time to take part in the Battle of Chickamauga, but was engaged at Knoxville. Returning to Virginia, it was conspicuous at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, in the trenches of Petersburg, and around Appomattox.
This regiment reported 3 killed and 23 wounded at First Manassas and totalled 650 men in April, 1862. It sustained 21 casualties at Williamsburg, 81 at Gaines' Mill, 73 at Frayser's Farm, 39 during the Maryland Campaign, and 102 at Wauhatchie. In 1864 it lost 18 killed, 95 wounded, and 16 missing during The Wilderness Campaign, and from June 13 to December 31, there were 11 killed and 65 wounded.
On April 9, 1865, the unit surrendered 19 officers and 263 men.
The field officers were Colonels A. Coward, John R.R. Giles, and Micah Jenkins; Lieutenant Colonels Andrew Jackson, G.W.H. Legg, and John D. Wylie; and Majors Thomas C. Beckham, William M. Foster, and William T. Thomson.
Palmetto Sharpshooters Regiment, South Carolina (Gen. Micah Jenkins') (a.k.a. "1st Palmetto")
The Palmetto Regiment Sharpshooters was organized in April, 1862, with transfers from the 2nd, 5th, and 9th South Carolina Infantry Regiments. Sent to Virginia, the unit was assigned to General R.H. Anderson's, Jenkins', and Bratton's Brigade. It fought with the army from Williamsburg to Fredericksburg, served at Suffolk and in North Carolina, then saw action at Chickamauga and Knoxville. Returning to Virginia, it continued the fight at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches, and ended the war at Appomattox. It lost 9 killed and 74 wounded at Gaines' Mill and sixty-eight percent of the 375 engaged at Frayser's Farm. The regiment reported 2 casualties at South Mountain, 65 at Sharpsburg, 4 at Fredericksburg, and 44 at Wauhatchie. It surrendered 29 officers and 356 men. The field officers were Colonels Micah Jenkins and Joseph Walker; Lieutenant Colonel John W. Goss; and Majors William Anderson, William W. Humphreys, and Franklin W. Kilpatrick.

John M. SURRATT volunteered under J. Q. CARPENTER of the Fifth South Carolina, a litter bearer in the regiment, and a soldier who never shirked his duty. On the night that I lay wounded on the battlefield, I heard him come up and ask if he reckoned Dick and Cout (Coutis SURRATT) were dead. I did not delay letting him know that we were not. He visited us several times while we were in the hospital. Later, on account of his age, he came home where he remained to run his father's mill. He was always close to me until his death. Now the memory of his goodness lingers with me. [by Richard M. JOLLY, 1924]

I don;t know if you can help me or not but my father was Hubert Olden Sarratt, born Nov 29th 1909 and died August 21st 1979.
I think he was born in either Gaffney or Blacksburg, South Carolina.
His father was M.C. Sarratt and mother Mattie Sarratt.
He had 1 sister and 2 brothers, 5. Lois, 3. Dewey and 1. Lector,
Lois married Joe QUINN of Atlanta,GA.
This is all that I have to go on right now for they have all past away and have left me with little to go on.
If you can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Books "Into the Dark Valley of Dispair":
The Battle against the Red Light Districts, Pg98
In Feb 1918 a report on the work of the CTCA's Committee on Protective Work for Girls documented the case history of 15 women and girls from South Carolina who had recently been committed first to the "National Training School" in the District of Columbia and then to the Sherborn Reformatory for women in Massachusetts. Ranging in age from 15 to 21 years, these women were interned as part of CTCA's crusade against vice. A number of characteristics appeared repeatedly in their case histories, including low education or mental age, an early entry into the world of work. disrupted or "degenerate" family histories, a long history of "immoral relations with men" often as prostitutes, and repeated arrest for that immorality. [96]
The case of Lois SARRATT was typical. Lois was 15 years old. She could neither read or write and had worked as a spooler in the cotton mills since she was 10 years old. She had "been immoral" since the age of 11 and had become a prostitute when she was 13 years old. Her mother was a known prostitute and had given birth to Lois illegitimately In August 1917, while living in the red-light district of Greenville, SC. Lois was arrested for selling liquor to soldiers. Escaping jail, where she was to serve a 3-month sentence, she was again arrested and placed in the rescue, from which she also escaped. When finally picked up and commuted, Lois suffered from venereal infection. [97]
Lois SARRATT exhibited all the characteristics of what the CTCA referred to as a hardened prostitute -- a long career in prostitution, a history of repeated arrest, and the resultant venereal disease assumed to infect all prostitutes. Lois, according to the CTCA, was a danger to her community. to the soldiers of Camp Sevier in that community, and finally, to herself. On this basis the CTCA approved of her long-term commitment to a reformatory. here Lois would receive treatment for both her physical and morals maladies before being permitted to return to her home in South Carolina. The CTCA committed Lois to the Sherborn Reformatory for Women.
