Subject: RE: [MOCEDAR] Re: Benton Hopkins Family
Dianne,
I received your email with the Hartley family chart and I really appreciate you sending it.
I have a puzzle that perhaps you or Mike Gilliland or someone else can solve for me.
I keep seeing references that claim that Thomas Bentley Hopkins was the son of Solomon and Mary Hartley Hopkins. I haven't seen anyone site a source for this claim though.
I have a problem, however, with my great-great-grandfather Thomas Bentley Hopkins being the child of Mary Hartley Hopkins.
I have seen the 1850 Census for Polk County listing a Thomas B Hopkins as a child in the Solomon Hopkins household. I have also seen the 1850 Census for Cedar County listing a Thomas B Hopkins in the household with Mary Kennedy Hopkins (widow of Hugh S Hopkins) along with his brother Hugh and sister (whose name escapes me at the moment). [NOTE: Both boys named Thomas B Hopkins are the same age -- 10 years old.]
The 1860 Census for Polk Co has Mary Hartley Hopkins, widow, without a son Thomas B Hopkins in the household.
The 1860 Census for Cedar County has Mary Hopkins now married to Allen Surratt.
In this household are Mary and her two sons Thomas and Hugh. The daughter had married by this time.
So whose son is Thomas B. Hopkins? I have always wondered if he was possibly a nephew (or other relative) of Solomon Hopkins who happened to be visiting in Polk County on the day the Censustaker came along. The fact that Thomas Bentley Hopkins married three Simrell women in Cedar County and the Simrell land adjoined the Surratt land in Cedar County, seems to me to lend weight to the fact that he lived in Cedar County instead of Polk County where Mary Hartley Hopkins lived.
What do you think? Nancy Floyd Mabie, [email protected]

Paul,
I ran onto your e-mail address while looking at the Surratt message board. I am searching for information on my Great Grandmother, Mary Margaret Surratt, born 1845 in Alabama, died 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri. She married Miles Brandon Baswell, Jr., August 13, 1865, and was the mother of 10 children. I have much more information from then until now, but am interested in finding her parents, siblings, etc.
I know that she is not the infamous Mrs. Mary (Jenkins) Surratt, but think that she might be a niece or have some connection to the husband of the infamous Mary Jenkins Surratt.
Being 73 years old and only having had this computer a short time, I am not very computer literate. So when I run onto something that looks promising, I hop right on it. Hence, my e-mail to you.
I am looking forward to hearing from you. I do have a printer so I can copy anything you might send me without a lot of trouble. Thanking you in advance, I will sign myself

Dear Paul,
this is Tanja Hofmayer from Hamburg/Germany. I found your website in the internet while I was sourching for my grandfather "Bill" William Sarrett.
He was in Germany during the war in 1945 and dated my grandmother during this time. Then he left in 1946 back to the states and my grandmother was pregnant, but she didn't tell him. Nobody ever searched for him, but I really want to know more about my grandfather. I don't think, he's still alive but we know, that he had a family in the states. So there must be some children of him. We don't want money or something... My grandmother never forgott him - he was her big love. I just want to give her some infos or a photo (we don't have one). My grandmother is 79 years old and I really want to give her some informations whiles she's alive.
Here are the known details:
William "Bill" Sarrett born around 1916, he said he was from "St. Louis" MO., he was cook in the army 1945 in "INGOLSTADT" Germany Please can you tell me if there is any chance to find him!
Where can I look for him?
It's very hard for me to do this from Germany.
Can you help me?
Looking forward to your answer!
Kind regards, Tanja Hofmayer [email protected]

Paul, I'm sure you've been hit by this before, and are about to get hit again, but with a bit more information.
This is in regards to the wife of Uriah Link of Indiana. She has been identified as Mary Ellen Seret. Her mother has finally been identified as America (Brown) Sarratt of IL and her father is John Sarratt of IL.
On the 1880 Census of Bowman Twp, Sullivan, MO, "Merica" Sarratt is listed in the home of Uriah Link, Mary Ellen and their children. She is age 45 at the time and listed as the "mother-in-law". Also on this census, it lists both parents of Mary Ellen (Sarratt) LINK as being born in IL.
On the 1900 Census of Buchanan Twp, Sullivan, MO, she is still in the household. This census presents her as America Surritt, born Feb 1833 in IL. Mary Ellen (Sarratt) LINK is listed as being born Sep 1854 in IL.
In Early Marriages of Sullivan County, Mary Ellen (Seret) LINK is listed in a marriage to Uriah Link on 15 Mar 1874.
I started looking in IL for a marriage of a John Sarratt (using as many spellings as I could muster) married to a woman named America. In the Illinois Marriage Index, Vol 1, page 151, there is a marriage listed for John Sarratt and America Brown on 4 Aug 1850 in Pike Co, IL. (thank God for wild card's in searches)
Do you have any records which might show America Brown and John Sarratt as either a direct line from or lateral descendents of Absalom SARRATT?

2nd E-Mail: Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 7:39:40 PM Eastern Standard Time
Paul,
I am at a standstill again. I was hoping the John Richard Sarratt was tied to the Absalom Sarratt lineage primarily due to the spelling of the last name and place of birth being North Carolina (census records - although census of 1850 states America Sarratt is also born in NC, which she was not)
After the 1860 Census, I can't find America and Mary Ellen. I did find Uriah Link, age 38 from IN, still married to Malinda A. (Larnish) Link, age 26 from IN in the Taylor Twp, Milan, Sullivan Co, MO 1870 Fed Census (House visitation: 32 - 32). In that census, it does show the 4 children, and as many had suspected, but couldnt prove because of smudges, etc, the sons Ira and Riley are twins (age 4 on the census), born 1 Mar 1866. I was also hoping to find America Brown Sarratt/Mary Ellen Sarratt living somewhere nearby, but nothing on them in that Twp.
What we know is that John Richard Sarratt is gone from the household before the 1860 Census. The same situation exists for the Simpson Breeden (Hannah Brown Breeden's husband) and James Robinson (Ellen Brown Robinson's husband). James Robinson did alot of traveling:
Soon after leaving school, May 20, 1847, he married Miss Ellen Brown, a native of Sangamon county, Illinois. After his marriage he returned to freighting and piloting on the Illinois River and continued that business until 1851, when he went back to Rock Island and farmed until 1853. Then on the 5th day of April, he started with a team of four yoke of cattle, overland, to California, which journey he accomplished in a little inure than six months. He spent three years in California, chiefly engaged in mining, for the most part with good success; returning via Panama and New York to Pike county, Illinois, in the spring of 1856. Mr. Robinson came to Grundy county, Missouri, and settled upon his present place in the spring of 1856, and lived there until 1860. when he made his second trip to the gold fields of the then new West, engaged in mining and teaming, and returned by ship, reaching his home in Grundy county in January, 1864. Remained at home engaged with the duties upon his farm until 1876, when the Union Pacific having in the meantime been opened, he made his third trip, this time by rail, to the Pacific slope, and engaged in "packing" and trading, mostly in Oregon. He returned from Sacramento by rail arriving at home September 25, 1877 (Biosketch in the History of Grundy Co, MO).
Since all three husbands, Breeden, Robinson and Sarratt, are gone in 1860 (Rueben Brown, husband of Mary Brown was already deceased), they all may have taken the jouneys west to the gold fields of CA. Their absence in 1860 does not indicate a death in the Civil War, yet to be fought.
So, between when they were married in Aug 1850, America Brown had one child, Mary Ellen in 1852-1854 (conflicting census information) and then John Richard Sarratt disappeared before the 1860 Census was taken. America and Ellen migrated from Sangamon and Pike Co, IL to Grundy Co, MO between 1855 and 1860. After 1860 census, they are lost until Mary Ellen marries Uriah Link in 1874 in Sullivan, MO. Then America Brown Sarratt can be traced from Bowman Twp, Sullivan, MO to Buchanan Twp, Sullivan, MO between 1880 and 1900. Still no trace of John Richard Sarratt.

I linked into the Serrett family through research on the Hogsett family. My family records show my great-great grandfather William Henry Hogsett married to Mary Serett. In researching the Hogsetts, I came across Jean T Gillett's incredible work, which confirmed that marriage (10/29/1884 in Greenville, [Wayne Co.] MO). Her research shows the name Mary Jane Serrett. Per Jean's family group sheet based on the 1880 Montgomery County Ill census, there is Joseph C. (born abt 1827 Kentucky) and Lucinda M. Cole Serrett (born abt 1836 New Jersey) with children William [W?] abt 1862, Ida [L?] abt 1865 (there's a query on your site that may relate to her), Mary Jane abt 1868, "Maggie" abt 1872, and [Boni G.?] abt 1878. All children born in Illinois.
Quoting "Three Hogshead Manuscripts Related to the Hogshead/Hogsett Family of Virginia" (pg. 32) William and Mary lived in Beaver County, Oklahoma, then in Chester, Arkansas, where he died May 11, 1911. They had nine sons and one daughter..."
Chester is in Crawford County, Arkansas, where your website shows other Serat/Serratts, but I didn't see any family link.
Does this seem to make sense to you?
I have some beautiful pictures that I could scan and share, if people are interested:
William Hogsett and Mary Serrett (probably 1884)
Mary with three of her children
Mary (older)
And 2 pictures unlabeled that I believe are the following:
1) Mary (as a child) with father Joseph and brother William (identified by William and Mary Hogsett's daughter-in-law Georgie Strong Hogsett in the 1970's) If #1 is true,
2) Then I also have a picture of Joseph C. Serrett and 3 similar age men, which I would assume to be his brothers. There are also 2 other pictures that were mounted on the same scrapbook page as the last one above,
3) one with a woman (not Mary) outside sitting on a swing with a baby on her lap, and
4) one of a man wearing a hat sitting outside a very small "mud" home, leaning on a shotgun.
These photos look older than 1 & 2, which would be from the 1870's
If you know anyone that would be interested in seeing these pictures, or that could help me verify them, please let me know. Regardless, thank you for your wonderful site, and the amount of work you obviously do in maintaining it, and helping others with their research. I'm only a couple weeks into this, and I am so addicted, it's hard to go to work (and to bed)! Thanks for any help you can lend.

Lisa,
Thanks for the E-Mail. We believe Mrs. Mary Jane (SERRETT) HOGSETT to be the daughter of Joseph C. SERRETT & L. Nancy COLE.
