Hugh SARRETT - BORN IN SEVIERVILLE, TN
|
Adler Branch, TN. Sevierville is the County Seat, which is 26 miles southeast of Knoxville,
on US- Interstate 441, as the crow flies and 60 miles on foot. Catlettsburg
is located on State Hwy. 66, nine miles north of Sevierville. The
Smoky mountains are located equally between Tennessee and North Carolina. US-441
bisects the two, and the Blue Ridge Parkway connects the Smoky Mountians
with the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS:
The Great Smoky mountains are the most massive uplift (some 514,669
acres) in the East. The term "Smoky" refers to the blue haze,
sometimes dense smoke, that almost always surrounds the peaks. With
the exception of 6,684-foot Mount Mitchell, to the east of the range,
the mountains that form the Smooches are the highest in North America. There
are 16 summits more than 6,000 feet tall, and the main ridge does
not drop below 5,000 feet for a distance of approximately 36 miles. The
Smoky mountain range, form a boundary between North Carolina and Tennessee,
they are barriers to travel, they were more so in the earlier days
than now. For that reason it was easier to come to Tennessee from
the north than from the east. Many of the settlers therefore came
into Tennessee from Virginia. It was in fact thought by some that
it was part of that state. Four or five hostile Indian tribes inhabited
Tennessee up to as late as 1800. Explorers, representing Spain, France,
and England, visited the territory intermittently from about 1540
until the early part of 1700. White settlers moved into what later
became Sullivan and Hawkins Counties in the northeast corner of the
state. These Counties established settlements as early as 1772.

Possible Record Problem! |
In this 1910 Census Hugh SARRETT, listed that he, and
both his parents were born in Kentucky. This must be in error, as
various records above indicate that he and his parents were all born
in Sevier Co., Tenn. Its also interesting to note that,
the young 18 year old Alica F. Cleveland, which also was a boarder (Renting),
listed her occupation as "Jewelry Store Polisher"
"Divorced" Mary C. SMITH who later became
Mrs. Hugh E. SARRETT (this writers Grandmother)
was living with her parents, three buildings away on the same street
at 825 E. 10th. Street. She also was a "Jewelry Store Polisher"...prs

|
The Sheffield Car & Equipment Company
per the "Postcards of Historic Northeast" feature for this issue is the Sheffield Car &
Equipment Company. According to city directories from around 1911 the company was located at the
Blue River and the Santa Fe Railway tracks. There appears to be no listing in the directory after 1927.
The author surmises that the company may have been bought by the Kansas City Terminal Railway or
the property acquired by the Sheffield Steel Corporation.

Hugh E. SARRETT "Abandons" his Family: c1931 |
It has been reported by this writers mother that Hugh E. SARRETT
abandoned his wife Mary C. (SMITH) SARRETT, when children
"Bud" and Mary Ann were small, [No Record has been found of a divorce..prs]
it has been reported that Hugh E. SARRETT age about 48yrs,
"just left one morning", this might have been around 1923.
The date when Mary C. (SMITH) SARRETT and her two children left the Sugar
Creek home and removed to her Parents home is unknown. It is assumed
that Mary C. (SMITH) SARRETT and her two children
Paul "Bud" SARRETT age 13 years, and sister
MaryAnn SARRETT, age 14 years, moved
into there Grandparents John T. SMITH & Anna S. (McLaughlin) SMITH
home. The "SMITHS Home-Place" was located at 3021 Bellefountaine
Ave., K.C. Mo. prior to their death in 1930.
Records show that Paul R. SARRETT, Sr. did attend the Kansas City Public Schools, but only to the
8th. Grade. |
Possible Record Problem!
Mom, got the "Desertion 1923" story from my Dad,
who did NOT like his Father and everything he said about him was negative!
Records show above that Hugh E. SARRETT, did NOT
"Abandon" the children
"at a young age"
but latter after this April 1930 Census, which would make the
"young children" Paul Sr. (My Dad) was was 14 years
old in 1931; and his Sister MaryAnn, 16 years old.
Not the 1923 date above.

"Firstly, It is my will and I hereby bequest and desire

all my estate and personal property of every kind and character and wherever

|
Nothing is known of Hugh E. SARRETT from the time he left (1931)
his family in the Sugar Creek area of Kansas City. He returned to
the Kansas City area about the spring of 1942, some 11 years later.
My mother Lucille (Wilson) SARRETT remembers when they were living
in the "big" house on Wenzel (2804 Wenzel, K.C., Mo.)
..."Their was a knock at the front door and when I answered it this man asked
if this was where Paul SARRETT lived, I said yes, but he was at
work, he said that he would return later when Paul would be home"...
For the next 10 years (1942 to 1952)
their are no records found as to what he did or where he was living.
My mother M. Lucille (Wilson) SARRETT just stated that "...he
would just come and go, he would never say where he went..."

My father and aunt MaryAnn (SARRETT) DeVASHER, would rather not have anything to do with their father,

REMINISCENCES OF GRANDPA Hugh E. SARRETT: |
This writer was very young (11 years old), when my Grandfather
moved in with our house (3318 Kensington Ave.) but I remember Grandpa
Hugh had a red three wheel "Cushman" motor scooter, which
he would drive from his place in Grain Valley to our house on Kensington
with the side car full of vegetables.
In Grain Valley he built a one room concrete house with
"no windows" to live in, I still remember the smell of Kerosene
which he used to heat his house.
He dug a 12 foot diameter. by 12 foot deep well next to
the house which he never completed, it was lined with flagstones and
in the bottom was always full of dead animals.
When he moved in my mother bought a set of bunk beds which
was set up off of the Kitchen area and a curtain was hung across the
front, I slept on the top bunk while my Grandfather slept on the bottom.
He did not do much, he sat in his favorite chair in the
living room which he used most of the day, he always had a supply
of large tobacco twist (Tennessee grown ?) that he would chew constantly,
while he read the Newspaper. He always had a large fruit can beside
him that he used to spit into, which my mother was the only one who
would clean it. by Paul R. Sarrett, Jr.
He had a scar on his chin, which has been reported that
he was kicked by a Mule.
He was a very quite man, and I believe quite lonely, I don't
remember any discussions, nor do I remember him smiling very much. I
do remember him getting mad at me when I would pick on my younger
brother, but I could always run away from him.
