The first record we have identified as JOSEPH, 2 SARRATT, age 23, is in the Taxable, for Mattapany Hundred of Prince George's Co., MD. in 1733, taken by JOHN LAWSON, Constable.
[REF:#90] Pg5 On 13 May 1738, their is a Will of a Mrs. JOHANNA JONES, that mentions JOSEPH, 2 SARRATT owed her 740 pounds of tobacco and 5 shillings sixpence. This Will is also has an interesting point, that one of the daughters of JOHANNA JONES was listed as ANN (JONES) NEILL and the NEILL (or NEAL) family plays an important role later on in this family history. It was SARAH (TALBERT) NEAL, (1792-1845) who raised JOHN HARRISON SURRATT, Sr. who later married MARY E. (JENKINS) SURRATT, who was convicted and the first Women to be hanged in the United Sates; She was a Conspirator at the death of President ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
[REF:#90] Pg5 From the Debt Books of Prince George's Co., MD., it seems JOSEPH, 2 SARRATT, age 43 in 1753, acquired 50 acres of land called "Thomas Inheritance", in Prince George's County, MD. It is believed this land was located adjacent the northerly border of Charles Co., MD. where his brother SAMUEL, 1 SARRATT received 70 acres in Oct. of 1731.

In [REF:#90] Pg7 Writes: Their is a record that at age 21yrs [1759], JOSEPH, III SARRATT deserted from Captain DAGWORTHY'S Company at Fort Cumberland in Frederick County, MD. Previously he [age 19yrs] had served under Captain PEARIS and Captain J. BEALL'S command ever since October, 1757 until his reported desertion. This tour of duty was during the French and Indian War and Captain DAGWORTHY led an expedition against Fort Duquesne when the British General FORBES came to command this effort. The fort was occupied in November of 1758 and it is reported that at least 95 men from Maryland took part in this campaign. The BEALL family was a powerful family in Prince George's County, and Captain BEALL, a neighbor, probably recruited JOSEPH, III SARRATT. Desertion was probably on the minds of the men because the Maryland Assembly refused to vote funds to support them. General FORBES of the British Army saw that they got clothes and food, but that is not a lot to risk one's scalp for. No further records show up for JOSEPH, III SARRATT, maybe he died, rather than deserting? by Laura & Norman SARRATT Possible Record Problem! Maybe REF:#90] did NOT find any more info. on Joseph, III SARRATT in MD., but I belive he shows up in the 1790 Census for Montgomery Co., NC. along with son Joseph Jr. SARRATT. ..prs 1.3.2 Alphonus "Francis" SARRATT; [SFA-48] [SFA# 1.3.2] (2nd s/o Joseph,2 SARRATT & Mother: Mary Unknown) b. c1740, Mattapany Hundred Section, Prince George's Co., MD. d. bfr 1800 Census, a60y Prince George's Co., MD.
