Greetings from the lost tribes of Kansas:
Dated: Aug 01, 1999
Paul,
We grew up fifty miles apart but had no knowledge of one another. I was born in 1943 and graduated from Atchison High school (Atchison Kansas) in 1961. After a little time in California, I went to work for a manufacturing plant in Atchison where my Grandfather had previously worked for twenty-five years. I graduated from Park College in Parkville Missouri. In December of 1998, I retired from Atchison Casting Corporation as Vice President of Engineering after thirty-five years of service. During my career, the operation went from one plant to twenty-one plants worldwide.I knew well my grandfather Surritt who died when I was thirteen.
I never knew my Great Grandfather Surritt who died eleven years before I was born. My father had one brother and three sisters, all of which moved to California by the time I was in high school. No one could ever tell me much regarding the Surritt family. There was another family locally who spelled their name the same except that they had an E on the end. Members of this family as well as my own said the two families were not related.
In the late 1970s, I met older gentlemen in his eighties, who spelled his name Surritte, who said that yes we were related but he couldnt recall the details. One of my projects, after retirement was to document a history for my church in preparation for its ninety anniversary celebration in one location.
The Church actually came into existence shortly after Kansas became a territory. In my compiling of the history of Cummings Christian Church, located some ten miles from Atchison, I found that one of the early members were the Elisha Surritte family. After I issued the history to members of the church, they would ask me how I was related to the Surrittes in the history and I would have to admit that I didnt know.
This caused me to renew my efforts to learn more about the family. No one could tell me anything but some said that there was a study somewhere. I finally was able to obtain a copy of an earlier work form a Great Uncle and his wife. This was an ancestor chart done by someone from California in 1979. This listed Isaacs (my Great Grandfather) parents as James Hamilton [FG 2147] Surritt and Martha Jane Spratt. This included a copy of their marriage license from Platte County Missouri, part of the Platte County marriage records from 1839 to 1855 and part of the 1850 Missouri census. The compiler was unable to go back any further. From the church records, I found the graves of Elishas family, about four miles from my home. I also went to the library and obtained more complete copies of the census and marriage records.
I found that there were a total of three Surritts of various spellings in these records, James H., Elisha and Stephen. They all lived in Platte County in 1850 and were all listed as coming from Tennessee. What I found particularly interesting was near Elisha had three sons whos tombstones lists Elisha and Mary as the parents and that two of these sons had the same names as the elder Surritts listed in the 1850 Missouri census. This seemed just too coincidental to me and I formed a working theory that the three Surritts, listed in the 1850 census of Platte County and originating from Tennessee, were brothers and the Elisha had named two of his sons for his brothers. They lived just across the river in Missouri and came to Kansas after it became a territory in 1854. James H. is listed as a registered voter in Leavenworth Kansas in Nov 29th 1854.I then obtained a copy of my Great Grandfathers death certificate and found that it listed as parents not James and Martha but Stephen and Mary. Researching the Missouri census records, I found that in Sept 26th, 1850, Stephen and Mary Spratt were married. In the 1850 census, Mary is listed as 15 years old and Stephen is listed under a landowner Hundley. A copy of my Great Grandfather Isaacs obituary lists one half-brother and two half- sisters. The half-brother was John Hundley. This is the same name as the family that Stephen is listed with in the 1850 census. My guess is the Stephen died young, no in my fathers family knew him, and that his wife remarried. In the same cemetery where my Great Grandfather is buried, there is a Jackson Hundley and his wife, Mary. Jackson Hundley is one of the sons listed in the 1850 census on the farm with Stephen. They were of the same age. For someone that has never knew much of his history, this is exciting stuff. I have a lot of details on the Kansas Surritt and Surritte families, if they are of interest to you. I hope that youve found this interesting. Id like to hear from you when its convenient. Imagine my surprise when I found all the Internet information on the Sarratts. Thank you for all the effort that you have put into this.
Sincerely, Carl L. Surritt [email protected]
