Amos Bean SURRATT, 1847-1910

Sixth Generation!
Amos B. SARRATT
2nd s/o Jeremiah and Martha (BELL) SARRATT of Surratt Hollow.
He probably knew the fishing holes in McKee Creek well and
he probably learned to work hard on the little 40 acre farm Jeremiah
had. His only living daughter, Mayme Sarratt Black, now almost 90,
vividly recalls him and his history. She remembers him saying he
left the Hollow to go south to "live with French people" before the
Civil War, but she does not remember where he went. He told about
the big houses the people lived in and that they were originally
French. Perhaps he worked on a barge that went down the Illinois
River, not far from his home, and then down the Mississippi River
to New Orleans. Or did he make a trip to see his relatives in
Davidson County, North Carolina? If he did, the details are lost,
and although his father seems to have been proud of coming from
North Carolina, none of Amos' children knew that is where their
grandfather originated.

Not long after his 18th birthday, Amos joined the 10th Regiment
of the Illinois Infantry on 7 April 1865 during the Civil War. He
volunteered and signed up for one year. His papers in the National
Archives state the enlisting officer described Amos as being 5 feet
8 inches tall and he had hazel eyes, brown hair, and a light com-
plexion. His any career did not last long, because he apparently
contracted typhoid fever and was mustered out of the army with an
honorable discharge 5 July 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. His older
brother, Charles, went to Louisville and brought him home and later,
when he applied for a pension, a neighbor, Andrew J. Hall, testified
he remembers Amos was so weak he had to be carried into the house
when he came home and that he was weak for a long time after that.
when he recovered, he worked as a farmer.

On 2 April 1868, he married Mary Jane Six and they had two sons,
Sherman and Harry. Harry d. in July, 1875 and his mother, Mary
Jane, d. in September of that year. Amos became a widower with
a young son to raise.

On the same day that Amos had married Mary Jane Six, Anna
Robertson and John Williams were married. It is not impossible they
were married in the same church at a double wedding ceremony, because
Anna was already a devout Saint, and Jeremiah and Martha, Amos'
parents, were followers of the same faith. At any rate, it was a
small community, and they probably knew each other.

Anna was christened Diana Aranda Robertson when she was b. in
Akron, Ohio, but she always used Anna as her first name. Her father
was John Robertson who was b. 6 August 1815 and d. 18 July 1851
when Anna was a year old. Always a frail man, though good-natured

			End of Page 121

and considerate to his family, the hard work he performed farming
a few acres by hand and walking through the forest on a trail to
work in the timber was difficult for him. Ohio was wild, unsettled
country in those days and he was often stalked by panthers and
wolves as he went back and forth to work. One winter night a pan-
ther followed him home and he rushed inside the house and built up
the fire to keep the panther from coming down the chimney. The
anxious family could hear the animal prowling around on the roof,
but in the morning it was gone and only its tracks remained in the
snow where it had circled the cabin.

Anna's mother was Catharine Anna Purdun who was b. 11 Oct.
1825 in Middletown, Delaware County, Ohio. After John Robertson
d., she quickly remarried in 1852 because she had four children
to support. Her second husband was David H. Bump and they had
seven children, according to her obituary, but only three of her
children were alive when she d.; Anna Robertson Sarratt Hayden
Bump, and Louverna Bump Miller. The old family Bible states that
Catharine had joined the LDS Church in 1842 and was re-baptized
into the Reorganized Church in 1862. The archives of the Reor-
ganized LDS Church in Independence, Missouri, show that Anna
Robertson joined the church in 1864 in Elkhorn township, Brown
County, Illinois. She would have been 14 at that time and 18
when she married John Williams. Records show that Mary Jane Six,
first wife of Amos Sarratt, was also a member of the church.

John Williams had also been a soldier in the Union Army and
his service left him with chronic diarrhea which eventually caused
his death. Anna and John had three daughters, Stella, Nellie, and
Maggie, but only Stella survived, the other two dying in infancy.
Finally, John Williams d. in April, 1874, in Stewardsville,
Missouri, and apparently Anna returned to Brown County to her
family. A year after the death of Amos Sarratt's first wife, he
and Anna married. Together they had twelve children, which meant
that Anna bore fifteen children during her lifetime, and Amos
fathered fourteen.

Amos and Anna were married in November of 1876 and they re-
mained in Illinois long enough to have one son, David, and then
they drove all the way to Thayer County, Nebraska, by ox-team to
take up a government grant of land. In order to get people started
on the unbroken prairie, the government furnished beans, rice, corn
meal, bacon, and molasses to those who went. Anna and Amos arrived
in 1878.

Except for a short period of time that they spent in Trigo,
Kansas, Amos and Anna lived in Thayer County, Nebraska, near Hebron,
Bruning, and Belvidere. Their first house was a sod house, and some
of the children remembered it was partially a dug out house, not
uncommon in that treeless area, which nestled into a hillock for

			End of Page 122

shelter. Claude Sarratt always said he was b. in a sod house
located not far off the Emigrant Trail, although no one knows
exactly where it was today. They were living in a frame house by
the time Mayme was b., and she remembered that all the girls
slept in one upstairs bedroom, the boys in another, and her par-
ents slept downstairs. Anna always kept a sparkling white bed-
spread on her bed, and woe be to any child who attempted to sit
on that white bedspread!

When they first came to Thayer County, the sod was not yet
broken and the Emigrant Trail crossed their new home area. The
trail changed gradually from the divide between the Big Sandy
Creek and the Little Blue River, crossing the "18 mile ridge" and
descended into the valley of the Little Blue which it followed
for about 60 miles before travelers headed for Ft. Kearney on the
Platte River. Emigrants for California and Oregon, and some for
Texas, as well as the Pony Express went through Thayer County.

The early days were difficult days. The unturned sod was
difficult to plow and the first crops were small Once, Amos took
the team and went off to find work and get supplies. Food was
low in the house, and Anna was worried about feeding the children.
She cooked some beans, but they spoiled in the heat, and she had
not yet thrown them out when an old Indian came to the door beg-
ging for food. He saw the sour beans and rubbed his stomach and
pointed to his mouth. Anna tried to tell him they were sour, but
he didn't understand and pushed past her into the house, so she
gave him a spoon, and to her astonishment he ate all the beans.
When he was finished, he left, singing to himself as he walked off
across the prairie.

By this time, Anna had been alone for several days with the
children. There were no close neighbors. She had a milk cow and
in her loneliness, when she began to believe Amos had left her be-
cause of hard times and so many children, she thought the only
thing she could do would be to take the cow to the nearest neigh-
bors and sell it, and then maybe she and the children could reach
Nebraska City and decide what to do.

There was very little food left in the house. One night, when
she was almost desperate, she put the children to bed, and because
she couldn't sleep she sat out on the porch in a rocking chair look-
ing out over the rolling prairie. It was then, late at night, she
heard his wagon bumping and creaking along across the roadless
prairie, and she ran as fast as she could to meet him, crying with
relief. Amos hadn't wanted to stay away so long, but he had had
to go over 30 miles for supplies, and he found work for a few days
which gave him much needed cash, and it was a long way home.

When roads were finally cut in the Hebron area, Amos ran a
grader as a member of the road crew. As a farmer, he was best known

			End of Page 124

for raising hogs. It wasn't all hard work, however, because Mayme
remembers playing the piano and singing, and her older half-brother,
Sherman, often played the fiddle.

Amos always said he was a Baptist when religion was discussed,
but Anna was a devout Saint and read the Book of Mormon to the child-
ren, especially the younger ones. Two of her sons, Bren and Leonard,
became lay preachers in the RLDS Church when they lived in Independ-
ence, Missouri, and Mayme has always been a devoted worker in the
church.

Anna was determined her sons would grow up to lead healthy,
moral lives and she had them sign the temperance pledge in her Bible.
In addition, each boy who promised not to smoke at least until he
was 21 years of age received a gold watch with an inscription inside
the cover rewarding him for his abstinence.

Amos d. in 1910, and Anna d. twelve years later. They are
both buried in the cemetery at Belvidere, Nebraska, where Norman
Sarratt remembers they always decorated his Grandpa's grave on
Memorial Day because he was a soldier in the Union Army during the
Civil War. Had Amos known he had so many cousins from Davidson
County, North Carolina, in the Confederate Army? No one ever re-
members hearing him talk about it. See: [Amos Obit] By Mona Sarratt Knight

Brenard C. SARRATT's family notes say about this family that Grandmother
Purdun Robertson Bump was Holland Dutch, John Robertson's people
were Scotch-Irish, Martha Bell's family was southern, and the
Sarratt's were originally French.

Laura & Normans' 1980 book In [REF: # 90, Pg129] SURRATT/SARRATT FAMILIES, In the United States 1715-1980:
My Father "C.D." SARRATT, as he was known, was part owner of a livery stable and was Constable and Justice of Peace in Balvidere He and his brother, Dave, speculated in land in Colorado. In 1928 he moved his family to Ionia, Kansas, where he owned and operated the Farmers' Mercantile Store. In Ionia he was a member of the school board. In 1935 they moved to Santa Ana, CA. where he worked for the Kerr Glass Com- pany and he owned and managed a trailer court.

"C.D." SARRATT was an avid sportsman and camper. In the middle west he promoted and managed many teams including baseball, basket- ball, and boxing. He personally drove cars on auto polo teams, an exciting and dangerous sport, in Nebraska. He was b. in a sod house near the Emigrant Trail where it passed Hebron, Nebraska. As a child he was called Duve, and he became an

End of Page 129
inseparable friend of his older brother, Dave SARRATT. Duve and Dave learned to work hard on the farm, as did all pioneer young- sters, and they lived close to the land. They liked to hand fish in the Little Blue River, and one tine when Duve had waded into the stream and was feeling under a log for a cat fish, he felt something wriggling so he grabbed it and pulled it out of the water to see to his horror he had hold of a deadly water moccasin Using all his strength, he threw the snake as hard as he could up into a tree. That day he went hone without any cat fish for supper, but he was unharmed.

It was said in Belvedere that Hiram H. Harris, (my Mother) Carrie (Harris) Sarratt's father, owned the Methodist Church, but the truth was that he donated a good part of the money to build it and supported it heavily. His daughter, Carrie (Harris) Sarratt, often fed the preacher Sunday dinner, according to her children, but one of their most pleasant memories of the church was hearing their father's rich baritone voice in the choir. In later years "C.D." SARRATT entertained his grandchildren by singing humorous songs like "The Preacher and the Bear" and he did, indeed, have a fine voice. Grandpa Harris lived out of town on his farm, and at Christmas "C.D." SARRATT rigged up a sleigh from the livery stable and put his children under a big buffalo robe for the snowy ride to Grandpa's house for dinner. They never forgot the cold ride or the jingling bells on the horse.

Norman Sarratt (this Author) still remembers with pleasure skating on the pond east of town with his friends and the bonfires they built near the pond to warm themselves. All the boys in Belvedere were avid marble players and Norman developed a great skill at this game. When the passenger train stopped in town, Norman boarded the train and sold copies of the "Lincoln Journal" to the passengers. Another vivid memory of Belvedere were the ice cream socials featuring mouth-watering homemade ice cream which the Ladies' Aide Society organized.

Their home in Belvedere was a two story, thirteen room house which occupied five acres in the village near the school. Elm trees grew along the street and two large lilac bushes flanked the front steps. Carrie grew roses in the front yard which were sometimes eaten by the pet billy goat.

"C.D." SARRATT bought a handsome Reo touring car which was new and shiny when someone gave him a billy goat and he brought the goat home in the back seat of the car, but the curious animal poked his head through the rear sun-glass window for a better view of the world, somewhat aging the car. Carrie disliked him at once, and didn't change her mind when the goat appropriated the top of the mound of soil over the outside storage cellar as his place. It gave him a wonderful run at the milk cow who once placidly owned the yard in solitary peace. The goat also liked to charge anyone removing clothes from the line. But "C.D." SARRATT

End of Page 130
devised a harness and a two-child cart and Old Billy pulled the youngsters around the village.

Carrie tried to learn to drive the Reo and once she got the car into reverse, backed it down the driveway, stepped on the gas instead of the brakes, and shot across the street up the bank into Mrs. Hess' cherry tree! That ended her driving.

She was much more talented at sewing and every winter, when the managers of a touring Chautauqua Company wintered in Belvedere, she made costumes for their shows. "
