United States Draft Registrations The United States was initially determined to remain neutral as war erupted across Europe. However, pressure mounted as German U-boats attacked and sank ships carrying U.S. citizens and then attempted to persuade Mexico to attack the United States. On April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined WWI and soon held the first of three draft registrations in which more than 24 million U.S. men would register for the draft. The United States had more than 4.7 million service members serving worldwide during WWI. More than 50,000 American lives were lost during battle, with some 200,000 non-mortal woundings. |

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Byrne and Batstone Funeral chapel for
Mrs. Rena SURRATT, 70, 527 Alder. Services were under direction of
Mr. John Gill. Burial was in Shelton Memorial Park.
Mrs. SURRATT was born Feb. 6, 1889, in Moscow, Idaho and died last
Thursday at her home. She has made her home in Shelton for the past four years.
Surviving are: a son, Ray H. SURRATT, of Goldendale, [Klickitat Co.,] Washington; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas PATTERSON, of Longview, [Cowlitz Co.] Washington Mrs. Lewis CHURCHILL, of Shelton, [Mason Co.,] Washington; a stepson, Wiley SURRATT, of Shelton, [Mason Co.,] Washington; a step-daughter, Mrs. John SWETT, of Shelton, [Mason Co.,] Washington; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle (Hobart) DENTER, of Dufer Ore.; [Not a reconized Town?] 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
