SURRATT Migrate to Tulare County California 1838 or 1940  John Franklin SURRATT and the entire family except for a few of the married daughters moved to California because of the depressed economy at that time. They were trying to find a place they could make a better living for their family. They were a very close family. They all ended up at the Visalia Migratory camp in about 1938 or 1940. My Grandfather Edgar Robert SURRATT did auto mechanic work at the camp and eventually opened his own service station and garage in Visalia. The name of the business was the "Lincoln Oval Garage". I have a photo of most of the brothers plus their father my Great-Grandfather John Franklin SURRATT in front of the garage and service station.      On the trip to California, one child of my Grandparents 4th Son Glen Olin SURRATT died in Phoenix, Arizona. They had stopped to work in that area when he died of pneumonia.      My Great Uncle Luther SURRATT is on at least one of the audio recordings, "Voices of the Dust Bowl" located in the National Archives. He was participating in one of the camp meetings.

The Migrant Experience      A complex set of interacting forces both economic and ecological brought the migrant workers documented in this ethnographic collection to California. Following World War I, a recession led to a drop in the market price of farm crops and caused Great Plains farmers to increase their productivity through mechanization and the cultivation of more land. This increase in farming activity required an increase in spending that caused many farmers to become financially overextended. The stock market crash in 1929 only served to exacerbate this already tenuous economic situation. Many independent farmers lost their farms when banks came to collect on their notes, while tenant farmers were turned out when economic pressure was brought to bear on large landholders. The attempts of these displaced agricultural workers to find other work were met with frustration due to a 30 percent unemployment rate.      At the same time, the increase in farming activity placed greater strain on the land. As the naturally occurring grasslands of the southern Great Plains were replaced with cultivated fields, the rich soil lost its ability to retain moisture and nutrients and began to erode. Soil conservation practices were not widely employed by farmers during this era, so when a seven-year drought began in 1931, followed by the coming of dust storms in 1932, many of the farms literally dried up and blew away creating what became known as the "Dust Bowl." Driven by the Great Depression, drought, and dust storms, thousands of farmers packed up their families and made the difficult journey to California where they hoped to find work. Along with their meager belongings, the Dust Bowl refugees brought with them their inherited cultural expressions. It is this heritage that Charles L. Todd and Robert Sonkin captured on their documentation expedition to migrant work camps and other sites throughout California.

Loyd Donald SURRATT of Visalia, passed away Wednesday March 11, 2009 at the age of 64. Don was born in New Boston, [Bowie Co.] Texas on May 30, 1944 to Luther and Pauline SURRATT. Don moved to Visalia as an infant when he was only two weeks old. He attended Visalia schools graduating from Redwood High School in 1963. While attending Redwood, he met his future wife, Miss Gayle TOLLISON. They married on March 25, 1965. Don worked for Early California Foods (Olive Plant) for several years and in 1969 started working for Tulare County Acoustical and remained there until his death.      Don was a member of the Goshen Mounted Police, Visalia Sportsman's Club and the Visalia Senior Gleaners. He was a wonderful craftsman of woodworking and enjoyed fishing and hunting with his family and friends. He is survived by Gayle, his wife of almost 44 years, son Scott SURRATT (Kimberly L.), grandchildren: Thomas, Raelynn, and Jenna SURRATT all of Visalia; three brothers living; <--- #3.)   James & Wanda SURRATT, of Stockton, CA., <--- #7.)   Bob & Frances SURRATT of South Carolina; <--- #9.)   Paul & Donna SURRATT of Porterville, Tulare Co., CA. and one sister living: <--- #4.)   Ann (Surratt) & Clarence McCollum of Visalia, Tulare Co., CA. Thomas Scott SURRATT passed away at the age of 17 on March 25, 2009. He was born in Visalia on November 24, 1991. Thomas attended El Diamante High School and had just recently transferred to Mt. Whitney. Thomas was active in swimming, choir and was a Volunteer in Prevention for CALFIRE. Thomas was a joy to be around his sense of humor and quick wit made all those around him laugh. He enjoyed playing practical jokes on family and friends, drawing cars, trucks and cartoons. Camping, hunting and fishing with family, trips to the coast or just spending a movie night at home are a few other things he enjoyed doing. Words just cant express how much he is loved and will be missed by his family and friends. Thomas is survived by his: <--- Father Scott Surratt, step mother Kimberly. A funeral for Edna May SURRATT will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Forest Grove Memorial Chapel. Interment was in Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove. Mrs. SURRATT died of causes related to age Monday in her home. She was 71 years. She was born Dec. 4, 1920, in Cheyenne Wells, Colo., and received her education in Colorado Springs and Gridley, Colo. Her maiden name was FITZJARRELL. Mrs. SURRATT lived in Porterville, [Tulare Co.] Calif., for 30 years before moving to Oregon in 1988. Survivors include her [5] Sons: 1. 1st Son)   Vernon of Verona, [Lawrence Co.] MO., 4. 2nd Son)   Harold of Carlton, [Yamhill Co.] OR., 5. 3rd Son)   Delbert of Woodland, [Yolo Co.] Calif., 6. 4th Son)   Alford of Gaston [Washington Co.] OR. and 7. 5th Son)   Kenneth of Newberg, [Yamhill Co.] OR.
