Kelly Long Writes: 16 May 2001: |
Sirretta Peak, Kern Co., CA. (sorted/filed as Sirretta) I am a descendent of an early settler of Kern County. From reading Mary Grace Paquette's book "Lest We Forget: The History of The French in Kern County," Sirretta Peak is named after Hyppolite "Harry" Sarret who is my great-great grandfather. The book is out of print and I have not had any luck getting one on order. However, I was fortunate to find a distant cousin who lives in Bakersfield who loaned me their book. And I believe that Poso Flat and Greenhorn mountain were two locations the family originally lived and ranched. Source: [REF:#003] Kelly Long |
Mr. Gail Darling Writes in April 1999: |
Hypolitte "Harry" SARRET, came to this country in 1864 at age 14.
He later went into sheep raising and had a very large flock. He
took them to the high country in the summer and back to the low
lands in the winter. The "Saretta Peaks" were named after him.
He went broke during the Cleveland admin. About 1893-95 and later
went into the cattle business. He married Julia K CAILLAUD about 1884. They continued to raise cattle on the homestead in Poso Flat, Kern C., CA. They had 5 children all raised on this ranch. It was a busy happy life with the usual hardships. Their son Paul's wife Esidra died in 1918 at age 20 in the influenza epidemic. She left 2 small children about 2 and 4 years of age. Their daughter Eunice died in 1920, age 32 leaving 4 minor children, they were put in an orphanage in Bakersfield, CA. Their father later married again and made a home for them. Their son Eugene served in WW1 for two years being discharged with some loss of hearing. Hyppolite "Harray" SARRET, became ill with cancer and died in 1928 at age 78. Julia and the grandchildren, Jack & Francis continued to live on the ranch and look after the cattle. She was a very lovable fiesty little woman about 5' 1" always known as "Grandma Sarret." She became ill in 1944 with heart problems and moved to Bakersfield making her home with grandaughter Marie Bernard Schallock> for the next year. She died 26 January 1945. *** PC-PROFILE *** Volume - II. Sarratt/Sarrett/Surratt Family Profile©
Compiled and self Published in Oct. 31, 1989 by Paul R. Sarrett, Jr. with
the assistance of my late mother Mrs. M. Lucille (WILSON) SARRETT (1917-1987) The SFA "Work-Books" were compiled by "States" listing the various families, born, married, died, and a history of that family branch. In 1996 I started "Up-Loading" this material on the Sarratt/Sarrett/Surratt Families of America (SFA)© site. ..prs |
