Bethpage Man
Robert Lee Woodward, age 21, met a tragic death Monday afternoon when he was loading a gravel truck from a gravel truck from a gravel storage pile. The ice-filled gravel slipped down and covered him twenty feet deep. Mr. Woodward who was an employee of the Sumner County Highway Department, had driven his truck to the large storage pile at Middle Fork Creek above Bethpage to load and haul gravel to the highway near Westmoreland. Several trucks were being loaded while Woodward was there. It took workmen an hour to recover the body, and the young man died for lack of air before he could he reached. Mr. Woodward was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Woodward of Bethpage, and was a young man of exemplary character. His untimely death is a great shock to the entire community. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Bethpage Methodist Church, where the deceased was a member. Rev. O. H. Lane, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was in the Bethpage Cemetery. Survivors besides his parents, are three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Dale Hunter, Mrs. Mary Frances Durham and Mrs. Laurine Thompson of Gallatin; three brothers, Roy Woodward of Gallatin and Kirk and Owen Smith Woodward of Bethpage.
