This newspaper obituary was found in a scrapbook belonging to Lela Smart Johnson. Lela ( born March 15, 1892, died April 15, 1989) was the daughter of James Marion Smart and Nina Belcher. James Marion Smart was the son of James Marion Smart, Sr. and Mary Jane Somerville/Summerville. After her husband's death, Mary Jane remarried and moved to Simpson Co., KY. She is buried in the Walnut Grove Church Cemetery, Sumner Co., TN, beside one of her sons, Charles A. Smart. Her tombstone lists her birth as 3 Jul 1843 and her death is inscribed as 24 Mar 1926.

Mrs. Mary Jane Tatum died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alice Butt, in East Portland, March 28. The interment was at Walnut Grove March 29, funeral services being conducted by the Rev. Austin. She was 82 years of age and is survived by two sons and one daughter, Dr. J. W. Smart, of White House, James Smart of Portland and Mrs. Alice Butt of Portland. Deceased lived in Franklin, Ky., and while on a visit here she was stricken with heart trouble.
