Valley Louise STEWART, 86, died on Thurs., Jan. 1, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center.  A Robertson Co. native, she was born on April 23, 1917 to the late Ida (Scrouge) and Ewing Burvin Jacobs.  She was a homemaker.  She is survived by three daughters, two brothers, 12 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan 3, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Gary Dean RIGGSBEE, 52, of Cottontown, died on Sat., Jan 3, 2004 at his residence.  A Robertson County native, he was born on Jan. 12, 1951 to the late Martha (Fuqua) and Robert Dalton Riggsbee.  He was self-employed as a mechanic.  He is survived by his wife, two daughters, two sisters, five brothers, and five grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Jan. 6, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Thurman Eugene ROGERS, 61, of Cottontown died on Thurs., Jan. 1, 2004 in Nashville.  A Sumner Co. native, he was born on July 23, 1942 to the late Thelma (Brinkley) and Thurman Rogers.  He was employed in the construction industry.  He is survived by one daughter, two sons, six sisters, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan. 3, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Jake Link Cemetery.

Dorothy Louise NEWMAN, 76, of Portland died on Thurs., Jan. 1, 2004 at Highland Manor Nursing Home.  A Davidson Co. native, she as born to the late Carrie (Greene) and Orville Porter Keeler.  She was a homemaker.  She is survived by three daughters, two sons, one sister, two brothers, 12 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan 3, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Crestview Memorial Park in Gallatin.

Lattie B. KNIGHT , 78, of Portland died on Fri. Dec. 26, 2003 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center of Portland.  A native of Scottsville, Ky., he was born on May 9, 1925 to the late Etta May and Jasper Newt Knight.  He served his country in the U. S. Army and was more recently retired from Souther Gauge as a custodian.  He is survived by:  his wife, two daughters, four sons, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Mon., Dec. 29, 2003 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  The remains were cremated.

Kathleen MILLUZZO (O'Leary) Milluzzo, 57, of Portland died on Dec. 28, 2003.  A native of Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Mary M. (Notarangelo) and Capt. Daniel J. O'Leary.  She was a teacher and, as well as her many teaching positions in Mass., taught at Bethel, Austin Peay, Vol. State and Strayer Univ.  She is survived by her husband (Portland), a sister, a niece and nephew, and several aunts and cousins.  Funeral services were held on Fri. Jan. 2, 2004 at Manzi Funeral Home in Worcester, Mass.  Burial was at St. John's Cemetery in Worcester, Mass.

Jesse Turner BURGETT, 75, of Portland died on Mon., Jan. 12, 2004 at Westmoreland Health Care.  A Sumner Co. native, he was born on June 20, 1928 to the late Katie (Perry) and Ed Burgett.  He was a retired farmer and was a self-employed carpenter and painter.  He is survived by two daughters, both of Portland; two sisters, both of Gallatin; two brothers, one from Gallatin and the other from Hopkinsville, Ky., and six grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Thurs., Jan. 15, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.

Frances V. BRILEY, 77, of Portland died on Tues., Jan 13, 2004 at her residence.  A Sumner Co. native, she was born on Nov. 3, 1926 to the late Jennie (Harris) and Cleveland Hughes.  She was a retired laborer.  She is survived by her husband, two daughters, one stepson, and one sister (Portland), one half sister of Oak Grove, 10 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Thurs., Jan 15, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Ellen Odena Perdue DUFFER, 76, formerly of Portland, died on Fri., Jan 16, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Ind.  A Sumner Co. native, she was born on Dec. 10, 1927 to the late Pearl (Bracken) and Doc Perdue.  She was employed for 30 years by Western Electric in Indiana as an assembly line worker and retired in 1985.  She was a member of the Pioneers of America and a member of Martin's Chapel Church in Portland.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Z. Duffer, and three brothers, Oather, Estel, and William Perdue.  She is survived by one daughter, one sister (Portland), three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held on Wed., Jan. 21, 2004 at Forest Lawn Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home in Greenwood, Ind.  Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood, Ind.

Essie Mae GREGORY, 90, of Franklin, Ky. died on Sat., Jan 17, 2004 at Medco Center of Franklin, Ky.  She was born on Feb. 26, 1913 to the late Nannie Belle (Dorris) and Clarence Deasy.  She was a homemaker and a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Portland.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey (Jack) Gregory and son, Wayne Gregory.  She is survived by one daughter, two sons, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Jan. 20, 2004 at First Baptist Church in Portland.  Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.  Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Callie Lavoyce SMITH, 58, of Portland died on Sun., Jan. 18, 2004 at Alive Hospice in Nashville.  A Sumner Co. native, she was born on July 23, 1945 to the late Edward Cron.  She was previously employed at the Farmers Bank as a bookkeeper.  She is survived by her husband, mother, one daughter, two sons, stepmother, seven sisters, and three brothers.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Jan. 20, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.

Eunice Hodges PRICE, 66, of North Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Portland died on Jan. 19, 2004.  A 1955 graduate of Portland High School, she worked initially for Southern Bell in Gallatin and after several moves and several years of college, she found her calling as a teacher.  She was preceded in death by her father, Guthrie Hodges.  She is survived by one daughter, one son, her mother, two sisters, three brothers, one granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan. 24, 2004 at Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home in Jupiter, Fla.  Burial was at Riverside Memorial Park in Tequesta, Fla.  Ms. Price had previously established a college scholarship fund.

Douglas (Toby) Leon DOLLAR, 78, of Portland died on Thurs., Jan. 29, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  He was born in Sumner Co. on June 11, 1925.  He is survived by one sister.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan 31, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Prudence JENKINS, 89, of Portland died on Thurs., Jan 29, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  A Sumner Co. native, she was born on Jan. 21, 1915 to the late Pearl Ann (Bracken) and Cornelius Frankford Perdue.  She was a homemaker.  She was a member of Martin's Chapel General Baptist church.  She was preceded in death by husband, Woodrow Jenkins; two daughters, Elwanda Trammel and Annette Groves, one grandchild, Darlene Herbert, and one great grandchild, Casey Renee Groves.  She is survived by three daughters, one son, 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan. 31, 2004 at Martin's Chapel General Baptist Church.  Burial was at Sherron Cemetery Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ollie Thomas KELLY, 66, of Portland died on Wed., Jan 28, 2004 at Baptist Hospital.  He was born on Aug. 7, 1937 to Bessie Mae (Lamberth) and Brady Kelley.  He was retired from Ryder Trucking.  He was preceded in death by his son, Donnie Kelley.  He is survived by his wife, one daughter, two step-daughters, two sisters, two brothers, and two step-grandsons.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Jan 31, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Hillcrest cemetery in White House.

Dana Gwinn KEPLEY, 50, of Westmoreland died on Fri., Jan. 30, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  A Portland native, he was born on May 22, 1953 to Betty Geraldine and Gwinn Heilon Kepley.  He was employed by the U. S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in the Portland area for 13 years.  He was a deacon at Providence General Baptist Church.  He is survived by his wife, one daughter, one son, one sister, one brother-in-law, and one granddaughter.  Funeral services were held on Mon., Feb 2, 2004 at Providence General Baptist Church.  Burial was at Providence Cemetery.  Anderson & Woodard Funeral Home in Westmoreland was in charge of arrangements.

LaUna PARKER, 85, of Westmoreland died on Sat., Feb. 7, 2004.  She was the daughter of the late Martha Simpson and Charlie Newton Durham.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm Parker.  She is survived by one sister of Portland and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Mon., Feb. 9, 2004 at Alexander Funeral Home in Gallatin.  Burial was at Bethpage Cemetery.

Larry Randall HUGHEY, 55, of Portland died on Mon., Feb. 16, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  A native of Florence, Ala., he was the son of the late Wilda Faye (Giles) and Davis Hughey.  He was an Army veteran who served in Vietnam and a member of the Portland American Legion.  Survivors include his wife, one daughter, two sons, three step-children, one brother, and five grandchildren.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wed., Feb. 18, 2004 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, where military rites will be conducted by the Simpson County Honor Guard.

Howard William RYAN, 67, of Portland died on Sun., Feb. 15, 2004 at Highland Manor.  A Sumner Co. native, he was born on Oct. 28, 1936 to the late Stella (Perry) and Dewy Ryan.  He was a retired fireman for the City of Gallatin.  He is survived by two daughters, two sons, one sister, one brother, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Feb. 17, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.

Jerry Dale WEBB, 61, of Bethpage died on Wed., Feb 18, 2004 at Centennial Medical Center.  A native of Indianapolis, Ind., he was born on Feb. 12, 1943 to the late Ruby (Halliburton) and Jason P. (Earl) Webb.  He was a laborer.  He is survived by three daughters, two sons, three sisters, four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.  Funeral services were held on Thurs., Feb. 19, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.

Vernon M. CHATMAN, 73, of Portland died on Thurs., Feb. 19, 2004 at his residence.  A Pineville, La. native, he was born on May 3, 1930 to the late Lois (Tebbell) and Garrett Chatman.  He served in the U. S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War.  He was a retired butcher.  He was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy Chatman and Jeff Chatman.  He is survived by two daughters, one son, one step-daughter, one sister, one brother, and many grandchildren.  The body was cremated.  Portland Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Elmer Leroy BROOKS, 85, died on Mon., Feb. 23, 2004 at his residence in Atkins, Va.  A native of Smyth Co., Va., he was born to the late Flossie (Tibbs) and Oscar Brooks.  He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served in World War II.  He was a truck driver with B. C. Umbarger Trucking.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, Maynard Brooks and John L. Brooks.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, one daughter, two sons, one sister, one brother, five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held on Wed., Feb. 25, 2004 at 8:00 PM at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion, Va.  Graveside services will be held on Thurs., Feb. 26 at 11:00 AM at the Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat.

Gladys Aline BROWN, 84, of Portland died on Tues., Feb. 24, 2004 at Harriman Care and Rehab in Harriman.  She was formerly employed at Neuhoff Packing Co.  she was a 38 year member of First Baptist Church in Portland.  She is survived by one daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Fri., Feb. 27, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Westmoreland.

Billy Joe MARLIN, 73 of Franklin, Ky. died on Tues., Feb. 24, 2004 at his residence.  A Sumner Co. native, he was the son of the late Alberta (Civils) and Uel Marlin.  He had been a milk truck driver for Hendricks and Anderson Trucking.  He is survived by two sisters, one from Mitchellville, one from Detroit, three brothers, two from Franklin, Ky. and one from Smith Creek, Mich., two grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Fri., Feb. 27, 2004 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Emma Jean JACQUES, 79, of Portland died on Fri., Feb. 27, 2004 at her residence.  A native of Utah, she was born on July 1, 1924 to the late Alice (Johnson) and David Timothy.  She was a homemaker.  She served her country in the U. S. Coast Guard during World War II.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Winthrop Albert Jacques, and two sons, Larry and Peter Jacques.  She is survived by three daughters, one of Boilingbrook, Il., one of white House, and one of Portland, two sons, one of Portland and one of Madison, Wis.; one sister of Cleveland, Utah, 18 grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Mar. 2, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Her remains were sent to Cleveland, Utah.

Harvey D. TINSLEY, 85, of Greenwood, Ind. died on Sat., Feb. 28, 2004 at Greenwood Village in Greenwood, Ind.  A Bowling Green, Ky. native, he was born on Dec. 24, 1918 to the late Gladys (Stoval) and William Tinsley.  He was retired from Western Electric after 30 years of service.  He was a faithful member of Greenwood Church of Christ and Pioneers Club of America.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Wallace Tinsley, and his son, Volney Bunch.  He is survived by one daughter-in-law, four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Charles L. "Chuck" BORDERS, Jr., 21, of Franklin, Ky. died on Sat., Feb. 28, 2004 in Bowling Green, Ky.  A native of Simpson Co., Ky., he was the son of Loretta Meador Minnicks of Kingston, Ga., and Charles Louis Borders of Franklin, Ky.  He was employed by WBKO television station in Bowling Green, Ky.  He is survived by two half-brothers, and one half-sister.  funeral services were held on Tues., Mar. 2, 2004 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was at Crescent Hill Cemetery in Scottsville, Ky.

Clemie P. MAY, 102, of Portland died on Sat., Mar. 6, 2004 at Highland Manor.  She was born on Oct. 10, 1901 and was the daughter of the late James Webb.  She was a homemaker.  She is survived by one son of Portland, two granddaughters, seven great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Mon., Mar. 8, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

David Kyle McGEE, 18, of Portland died on tues., March 2, 2004 as a result of a motor vehicle accident.  He was born Sept. 13, 1985 in Bowling Green, Ky. and was a student at Portland High School.  Funeral services were held on Fri., March 5, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Hartsville Cemetery in Hartsville.

Heather Lynn BREWARD, 15, of Portland died on Tues., March 2, 2004 from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.  A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., she was born on June 7, 1988.  She was a student at Portland High School.  Funeral services were held on Fri., March 5, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Graveside services were conducted at Blount, Curry & Reed Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Woodrow Wilson "Moody" NOAH, 90, of Belvidere died on Wed., March 3, 2004 at his residence.  He was a native of Franklin Co. and was a retired farmer.  He is survived by his wife, one son, one sister, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Fri., March 5, 2004 at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home in Winchester.  Burial was at Maxwell cemetery in Belvidere.

A memorial service is to be held for Ralph M. DAVIDSON at the Portland Seventh-day Adventist Church (627 Broadway) on Sun., Mar. 21, 2004 at 2:00 P. M.  Ralph, age 92, was born on Aug. 2, 1911 near St. Marys, Ohio.  Following a short illness, he died on Sun., Feb. 15, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  He was a member of the Portland Seventh-day Adventist Church.  He is survived by four daughters, one foster daughter, three step-sons, and 12 step grandchildren.  Ralph Davidson was buried on Sun., Feb. 22, 2004 beside his wife of 59 years in Riverside Gardens Cemetery near Woodbury (Cannon County).

Naomi Ruth METZ, 87, of New Albany, Ind. died on Sat., Mar. 13, 2004 at Green Valley Health Care in New Albany, Ind. died on Sat., Mar. 13, 2004 at Green Valley Health Care in New Albany, Ind.  A native of English, Ind., she was the former Naomi Ruth Austin.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Goble Metz, and a daughter, Margie Hazelwood.  She is survived by one daughter, five sons, one sister, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Mar. 16 at the Market Street Chapel of Seabrook Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Home in New Albany, Ind.  Burial was at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Jeffersonville, Ind.

John AKIN, Jr., 87, of Portland died on Thurs., Mar. 11, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center.  A native of Simpson Co., Ky., he was born on Feb. 20, 1917 to the late Emma (March) and John Wesley Akin, Sr.  He was retired from Tennessee Gas with 30 years of service.  He is survived by two daughters, one son, one sister, one brother, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Mar. 13, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was in Sulfur Springs, Ky.

Carol Joy BRADSTREET, 66, of Portland died on Wed., Mar. 10, 2004 at Metropolitan General Hospital in Nashville.  A native of Walkerton, Ind., she was born on June 1, 1937 to the late Vera (Burnside) and William Peterson.  She was a retired tax preparer.  She is survived by her husband, one daughter, three sons, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Leonard B. GROVES, 85, of Portland died on Mon., Mar. 15, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  A native of Robertson Co., he was born on July 24, 1918 to the late Vera and Willie Groves.  He was retired from Stateline Gulf Station and served in the 1st Armored Division of the U. S. Army in World War II.  He was a member of VFW Post 5706 and a lifetime member of American Legion Post 62 in Franklin, Ky.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A. M. on Wed., Mar. 17, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Wade McNay SEALS, Jr., 58, of Clyo, Ga. died on Wed., Mar. 10, 2004 at Memorial Hospital.  A native of San Antonio, Texas, he was a retired Chief Warrant Officer with the U. S. Army after 20 years of service.  He had served in Vietnam.  He was of the Catholic faith.  A rosary service was held on Sun., Mar. 14, 2004 at Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Homes, Effingham Chapel, in Springfield, Ga.  Graveside services were conducted on Mon., Mar. 15 at Beaufort National Cemetery.

Betty Ann DOYLE, 50, of Portland died on Sat., Mar. 13, 2004.  She was retired from the State of Tennessee Department of Health and was a member of Portland Church of Christ.  She is survived by her husband, one daughter, two sons, her parents, one sister, one brother, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wed., Mar. 17, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial will be at Portland Memorial Gardens.

Rachel DURHAM, 81, of Portland died on Fri., Mar 19, 2004.  A native of Sumner Co., she was born on Aug. 24, 1922 to the late Lillie (Pardue) and George Caudill.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Durham.  She is survived by one niece, and two nephews (see obit of George Wilbur below) of Portland. Funeral services were held on Sun., Mar. 21, 2004 at Alexander Funeral Home in Gallatin.  Burial was at Rock Bridge Cemetery.

Louise Binkley STOEVER, 84, of Nashville died on Fri., Mar. 19, 2004.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar H. Stoever.  She was a member of the V. F. W. Auxiliary Post #1970.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Mar. 23, 2004 at Spring Hill Funeral Home in Madison.  Burial was at Spring Hill Cemetery.

Lucy Aline Graves MOORE, 78, of Hermitage died on Fri., Mar. 19, 2004 at Summit Medical Center.  A native of Franklin, Ky., she was born on March 13, 1926 to the late Jimmy Lee (Glover) and Edward Graves.  She was a homemaker.  Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Sat., Mar. 27, 2004 at Fairfield Cemetery.  Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles "Paul" DILLIARD, 46, of Portland died on Sat., Mar. 20, 2004.  A native of Knox, Ind., he was born on April 11, 1957 to the late Norman Dilliard.  He was a truck driver and had served in the U. S. Air Force.  He is survived by his wife, daughter, son, mother, all of Portland; three brothers and many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.  Funeral services will be held at Portland Funeral Chapel at 11:00 AM on Wed., Mar. 24, 2004.  Burial will be at Mt. Juliet Memorial Gardens in Mt. Juliet.

Ralph Lynn CIVILS, 56, of Portland died on Wed., Mar 24, 2004 at his residence.  A Portland native, he was born on March 6, 1948 to the late Rebecca (Webb) and Harry Civils.  He was a fireman and policeman for the City of Portland.  He is survived by his wife, two daughters, three sons, three sisters, two brothers, and five grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Mar. 27, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.

A prominent retired United Methodist Church minister, Dr. John Robert (Bob) PARKS, of White House, died on Tues., May 18, 2004, at his home in White House, following a battle with progressive supranucular palsy since 2002, an illness he faced with great faith and courage.  He was born March 18, 1931, in Highland Park, Mich., the son of the late Samuel Terry Parks and Mary Alberta Hooper Parks, and was licensed to preach in 1951.  Prior to his retirement in 1994, he served as pastor of Methodist churches in Middle Tennessee, which included Marble Plains Charge, Almaville Charge, Bell Buckle, U.S. Army Chaplain, St. Johns, McKendree Memorial, Lewis burg First, Dalewood, Crievewood, New Providence, Connel, Carthage, Walker's-Lutons, White House, South End, Christian Voice, Pleasant Grove, and Rehoboth.  He is survived by his wife, two sons, one daughter, four grandsons, and one sister.

Kenneth Ryon CASE, Sr. 88, of Portland died on Fri., May 14, 2004 at his residence.  A native of Spartanburg, S.C., he was born on Aug. 2, 1915.  Initially after relocating to the Portland area, he was the farm manager at Fountain Head Rural School while also pursuing his chosen career as a piano tuner, technician and Kendall Piano and Organ dealer.  He was an "honorary" faculty member at Western State University where he tuned 30+ pianos for 28 consecutive years.  He continued to service and sell pianos even after retiring.  He is survived by his wife of 64 years, one daughter, one son, four sisters, two brothers, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  Services were held on Sun., May 16, 2004 at the Highland Seventh-day Adventist Church. Interment following at Old Brush Cemetery.  

Joseph (Jack) Walter BOWERS, 48, of Gallatin died on Tues., May 25, 2004 at his residence.  A native of Davidson Co., he was born on Nov. 13, 1965 to the late Frances (Brown) and Elijah Walter Bower.  He was a stage worker.  He had served in the U. S. Denis Leonard GRIFFIN, Jr., 30, or Portland died on Tues., June 29, 2004.  A Davidson Co. native, he was born on Nov. 13, 1973.  He was a heavy equipment operator for Prestige Homes.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Maudie and Herschel Mink; an aunt and uncle, Mary and David Mink; and nephew, Richlon Griffin.  He is survived by one daughter, his parents, one sister, two brothers, three nieces, a nephew.  Funeral services were held on Fri., July 2, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Portland Memorial Gardens.

Jewell E. GROVES, 99, of Franklin, Ky. died on Wed., July 7, 2004 at the Medical Center in Bowling Green, Ky.  A native of Robertson Co., he was the son of the late Lela (Dillard) and Isaac Groves.  He was a Kentucky Colonel and the oldest member of the Mitchellville First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School superintendent for 53 years.  He had served as a constable for 12 years, deputy sheriff for four years and Simpson Co., Ky. sheriff from 1974 - 1978.  He was a member of the Kentucky Sheriff's Association and was the oldest former sheriff in the state of Ky.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura (Winchester) Groves. He is survived by one daughter, two sons, three sisters, eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Fri., July 9, 2004 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

McKynzie Rayne ASHWORTH, 27 days old, of Lafayette died on July 11, 2004 at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital.  She is survived by her parents, grandparents, and many relatives.  Funeral services were held on Tues., July 13, 2004 at Alexander-Goad Funeral Home in Lafayette.  Burial was at Macon County Memorial Gardens.

Sinda J. HUNTER, 70, of Portland died on Wed., July 7, 2004 at her residence.  A native of Lafayette, she was born on July 11, 1933 to the late Emma (Hoskins) and Ernest Barber.  She was a seamstress and a member of Christ's Apostolic Holiness Church.  She is survived by her husband, two daughters, two sons, one sister, two brothers, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Fri., July 9, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Franklin, Ky.

Elizabeth Randolph JERNIGAN, 91, of Portland died on Tues., July 13, 2004 at Highland Manor Nursing Home.  A native of Robertson Co., she was born on January 17, 1913 to the late Sallie (Hendly) and Boyd Randolph.  She was a retired garment factory seamstress.  She is survived by one son, three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Thurs., July 15, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

William PERDUE, 79, of Paducah, Ky. died on Wed., July 14, 2004 at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ky.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Lottie Perdue, and his parents, Ethel (Biggs) and William Perdue.  He was a welder/custodian and had served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II.  He is survived by his second wife, three daughters, five sons, 22 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Sun., July 18, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Shelby Jean PRICE, 67, of Franklin, Ky. died on Sun., July 11, 2004 at her residence.  She was born on Apr. 17, 1917 to the late Melissa Dunn Bratton and Horace Dunn, Sr.  She attended school in Rockfield, Ky. and later married Charles Price, Sr. on May 26, 1953.  She was a retired medical assistant who had previously worked for Dr. Albert Dittes.  She was employed at Franklin-Simpson Hospital for 20 years.  She was a member of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church and was a member of the senior choir and the New Hope Mother's Board. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Price, Sr.; one son, Charles H. Price, Jr.; and four brothers, Ruble, Hugh, Phillip, and Bobby Dunn.  She is survived by four daughters, two sons, three sisters, five brothers, thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Wed., July 14, 2004 at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.  Burial was at the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.  Johnson & Coleman Funeral Home in Gallatin was in charge of arrangements.

Herschel Glen LEGGE, 89, of Portland died on Sun., July 18, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  A Sumner Co. native, he was born on Nov. 10, 1914 to the late Henda (Pearson) and Hubert Glen Legge.  He was a retired farmer.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Clara Estelle (Buntin) Legge; one sister, Ora Starks; and a great-grandson, Christopher Key.  He is survived by five daughters, one son, one sister, 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren; and 17 step grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Tues., July 20, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

James Ewin DIXON, 69, of Portland died on Fri., July 16, 2004 at his residence.  A native of Orlinda, he was born on Aug. 8, 1934 to the late Louella (Birdwell) and Jimmie J. Dixon.  He was a retired farmer.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Sanford Dixon.  He is survived by his wife, three daughters, one son, three stepchildren, three sisters-in-law, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Mon., July 19, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Providence Cemetery in Franklin, Ky.

Lemuel Albert DILLARD, Jr., 77, of Portland died on Fri., July 16, 2004 at Baptist Hospital.  A native of Davidson Co., he was born on May 21, 1927 to the late Betty Jean (Lovell) and Lemuel Albert Dillard, Sr.  He was employed as a utility worker by Metro Water Works.  He is survived by one daughter, three sons, one sister, 15 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.  Graveside services were held on Mon., July 19, 2004 at Spring Hill Cemetery in Madison.  Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Dovie Maie PEARSON, 55, of Portland died on Tues., July 20, 2004 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville.  A native of Westmoreland, she was born May 8, 1949 to the late Margaret (Graves) and James Cole.  She was a homemaker.  She was preceded in death by her husband, David Pearson, both parents and a sister, Mary Grimm.  She is survived by two sons, three sisters, four brothers, and four grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Fri., July 23, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Dicie Jean Cardwell FURNISH, 58, of Franklin, Ky. died on Wed., July 28, 2004 at her residence.  A native of Simpson Co., she was the daughter of the late Edna (Forshee) and Herbert Cardwell.  she was an administrative assistant at Parallel Produce, a member of Franklin First Methodist Church and a member of the American Legion Ladies Aux. Post 62.  She is survived by her husband, one daughter, three sisters, and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Sat., July 31, 2004 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  burial was at Sulphur Spring Cemetery in Franklin, Ky.

Larry Stanley OWENS, 70, of Portland died on Sat., July 31, 2004 at Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Portland.  A Portland native, he was born on Dec. 17, 1933 to the late Gladys (Bunch) Owens.  He was a retired machinist.  He served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War.  He is survived by his wife, three daughters, one sister, three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Aug. 3, 2004 at Portland Funeral Chapel.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.

Harold Thomas HESTER, Jr., 86, of Portland died on Thurs., July 29, 2004 at his residence.  A Sumner Co. native, he was born on Jan. 13, 1918 to the late Eulah (Absher) and Harold Hester.  He was retired from insurance and securities and the auto business.  He served his country in the U. S. Deborah Lynn DOCKERY, 53, of Oakwood, Ga. died on Sun., Aug. 1, 2004 at North East Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga.  She was employed as a nurse in Oakwood, Ga. and was a member of the Baptist faith.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruby Mae (Gray) Tays and William C. Horace L. SMART, 87, of Cottontown died on Sun., Aug. 8, 2004 at his residence.  A Portland native, he was born on Jan. 1, 1917 to the late Nona (Link) and James Lillard Smart.  He was a retired agent with the L & N Railroad.  He was a 50 year member of the masons, Eastern Star and scottish Rites and was a deacon of Mt. Pleasant General Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacque Power.  He is survived by one daughter, two sons, two step-daughters, one sister, 12 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.  Portland Lodge #326 F. & A. Ronnie BELCHER, 56, of Scottsville, Ky. died on Fri., Aug. 6, 2004 at the Medical Center in Scottsville, Ky.  He was a Sumner Co. native.  He was an auto mechanic and served his country in the U. S. Army in Vietnam.  He was a member of the Franklin VFW Post 5706.  He is survived by his wife, three daughters, two sons, mother and stepfather, father and stepmother, four brothers, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. SHOULDERS, 79, of Franklin, Ky. died on Tues., September 7, 2004 at Greenview Regional Hospital in Bowling Green, Ky.  A native of Bernie, Mo., she was the daughter of the late Rebecca (Harp) and Palo Hicks.  She was the former owner of Ma and Pa's Diner and was a member of the Mt. Pleasant General Baptist Church in Cottontown.  She was preceded in death by both parents; one son, Bobby Joe Burgett; one step-daughter, Pat Johnson; and two brothers, Elmer and Johnny Hicks.  She is survived by her husband, two daughters, six sons, one stepdaughter, two stepsons, one sister, 35 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Fri., Sept. 10, 2004 at Booker-Gilbert Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, Ky.

Floyd D. Joseph Jacob "Bud" TAYLOR, Sr., 62, of Portland died on Thurs. Sept. 16, 2004 at his residence.  A native of Berkely, W. Orbia Lee BARBER, 98, of Franklin, Ky. died on Thurs., Sept. 16, 2004 at the Cal Turner Extended Care Facility in Scottsville, Ky.  A native of Sumner Co., she was the daughter of the late Oma (Loveall) and Joe Roberts.  She was a member of the Boiling Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John William Barber.  She is survived by one son, one sister, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.  funeral services were held on Sun., Sept. 19, 2004 at Crafton Funeral Home in Franklin, Ky.  Burial was at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Christopher Kyle KEEN, 20, of Portland died on Fri. Sept. 17, 2004 as a result of a vehicular accident.  A Portland native, he was born on Dec. 14, 1983.  He was a student at Bowling Green Technical School.  He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Edna McCormack of Portland.  He is survived by his mother and stepfather, father and stepmother.  Funeral services were held on Mon., Sept. 20, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Clarence Allan KERLEY, 95, of Columbia died on Fri. Sept. 17, 2004 at Maury Regional Hospital.  A native of Portland, he was the son of the late Edna (McNeill) and C. W. Kerley.  He was a well-known Columbia businessman.  A graduate of Portland High School, he attended Middle Tennessee State Univ. and the College of Commerce of Bowling Green Univ., from which he earned both B. A. and B. S. degrees.  After college, he taught at Portland High School for four years before entering the family retail business, Kerley Furniture Company.  He is survived by two sons, one sister, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.  Funeral services were held on Mon., Sept. 20, 2004 at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia.  Burial was at Polk Memorial Gardens.

Michael Joseph BROWN, 54, of Springfield died on Sat., Sept. 18, 2004 at Hendersonville Medical Center.  A native of Atlanta, Ga., he was born on Jan. 28, 1950 to the late Mary (Armistead) Brown.  He served his country in the U. S. Navy and was employed in the construction industry.  He is survived by one son, father, three sisters, three brothers, and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Sept. 21, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Sherron Cemetery.

Mary Charlotte Armstrong PAYNE, 87, of Portland died on Sun., Sept. 19, 2004 at her residence.  A Robertson Co. native, she was born on July 4, 1917 to the late Ruby Mae (Lane) and Joel Armstrong.  She was a homemaker and a faithful member of McKendree Memorial United Methodist Church.  She was also a member of the Highland Rim Historical Society.  During WWII, she worked at Vultee as a "Rosie the Riveter."  She was a charter member of the West Portland FCE and for many years served as president.  She was a valued employee working for local grocers, Fred Brizendine and Floyd Briley and for United Farm Supply.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Van Allen Payne.  She is survived by two daughters, three sons, three sisters, one brother, ten grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wed., Sept. 22, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery.

Roy Frank DRUSKY II, who was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 22, 1930 to Roy Frank and LaVern Ewing Druschky went to sleep in Jesus on September 23, 2004 to await the resurrection, after a four year journey of failing health.  Roy and his wife met in Daytona Beach, Florida  and were married in Atlanta, Ga. on March 9, 1957.  They moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in April.  In December of 1958 they were invited to move to Nashville and he was asked to join the Grand Ole Opry in June of 1959.  Roy recorded many albums and traveled over much of the world for 30 years, retiring from entertaining in 1980 when he joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church and became a devout Christian.  He traveled with Kenneth Cox Ministries for 15 years, singing and recording gospel music.  He is survived by his wife, three sons, five grandchildren, a half brother and sister, one aunt, several cousins, nieces and nephews.  A Remembrance Service and Gathering will be held on Sun., Oct. 3 at 3:00 PM in the Highland Seventh-day Adventist Church, Hwy. 109 S, nine miles north of Gallatin.

Charles Rhea HOPPER, 61, of Portland died on Tues., Sept. 21, 2004 at Highland Manor.  A Davidson Co. native, he was born on Nov. 2, 1942 to the late James Jewell (Sullivan) and Grover Hopper.  He was a truck driver.  He is survived by his wife, three daughters, one son, one brother, three uncles, 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Sept. 25, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Mitchellville General Baptist Church Cemetery.

Frances Pond Reid FRENCH, 80, of Cottontown died on Sun., Oct. 3, 2004 at NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield.  A Cottontown native, she was born on June 10, 1924 to the late Della (Baldridge) and Samuel Pond.  She was employed for 32 years at the Tenn. Department of Employment Security office in Gallatin.  She was a member of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church for many years and St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Franklin, Ky.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Houser Reid, and by a brother, Clinard Pond.  She is survived by her husband of Cottontown, one daughter, two stepdaughters, one stepson, three grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and one great grandson.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wed., Oct. 6, 2004 at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Franklin, Ky.  Burial will follow at 2:00 PM at Walnut Grove Cemetery in White House.  Portland Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Lawrence (Wendy) HESTER, 86, of Portland died on Tues., Oct. 12, 2004 at his residence.  A Sumner Co. native, he was born on Dec. 21, 1917 to the late Pearl (Biggs) and Charlie Hester.  He was a retired farmer.  He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and saw combat in World War II.  During that time, he spent six months as a P.O.W.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Mai Hester, and by a son, Charles Dale Hester.  He is survived by two daughters, one son, one sister, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  funeral services were held on Thurs., Oct. 14, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Old Halltown Cemetery.

Paul McCLOUD, 70, of Portland died on Fri., Oct. 15, 2004 at Kindred Hospital in Nashville.  A Sumner Co. native, he was born on Oct. 8, 1934 to the late Hallie Frances (Pearson) and John McCloud.  He was an automotive mechanic.  He is survived by two sisters and two brothers.  Funeral services were held on Sun., Oct. 17, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.

Farris L. "Forrest" HALL, 68, of Gallatin died on Tues., Oct. 12, 2004.  He was a self employed electrician and had served his country in the U. S. Army.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Fannie Elizabeth (Parks) and Claude Hall and by a brother, James C. Irene Cross LONG, 83, of Portland (formerly of the Mt. Robert Waldo McELHOES, 82, of Cottontown died on Wed., Oct. 27, 2004 at his residence.  A native of Punxutawney, Pa., he was born on Dec. 6, 1921 to the late Martha (Schurr) and George McElhoes.  He was a retired steel worker.  He served his country in the U. S. Marines during World War II.  He was a member of the Portland First Baptist Church.  He is survived by his wife, one daughter, one son, one sister, three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.  A memorial service was held at Portland First Baptist Church on Sat., Oct. 30, 2004.  Portland Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Harold Ray HODGES, 69, of Castalian Springs died on Sat., Nov. 6, 2004 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.  A native of the Rock Bridge Community in Sumner Co., he was born on May 20, 1935 to the late Callye (Gilbert) and Alice Lurlene Brown Hodges, Sr.  He was retired from Eaton Corp, with 33 years of service.  Prior to his illness, he worked as the mail distributor for Volunteer State Community College.  He was a member of the Rockbridge Missionary Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his former wife, Lucille Perry, and four brothers, Glenn Hodges, Talmadge Hodges, Leo Hodges, and Joe Hodges.  He is survived by his wife of 16 years, one son, two stepdaughters, two stepsons, and five brothers.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Nov. 6, 2004 at Anderson & Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Gallatin.  Burial was at Sumner Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Russell Dewey GILLIAM, 87, of Portland died on Thurs., Nov. 4, 2004 at Vanderbilt Medical Center.  A native of Macon Co., he was born on July 23, 1917 to the late Zula May (Howell) and Willie Guy Gilliam.  He was a farmer and was retired from the Tennessee Gas and Transmission Company.  He served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corp, during World War II and saw action in Burma.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his former wife, Tennie Worley Gilliam; sister, Virginia Hunter; and three brothers, Orville Gilliam, Robert Gilliam and Noel Gilliam.  He is survived by his wife, one daughter, one son, one stepson, two brothers, and two grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sun., Nov. 7, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.

Clayron H. WEBB, 95, of Portland died on Sat., Nov. 6, 2004 at Highland Manor.  He was a retired farmer.  He is survived by a son, a sister, nine grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.  His wife, Sallie Webb, preceded him in death.  Funeral services were held on Tues., Nov. 9, 2004 at State Line Church.  Burial followed at State Line Church Cemetery.

Carolyn Hill McFARLAND, 72, of Portland died on Fri., Nov. 26, 2004 at Sumner Regional Medical Center.  A native of Dyersburg, she was born on Oct. 8, 1932 to the late Oran (Atchison) and Fred Hill.  She was a restaurant owner/operator.  She is survived by two daughters, one son, two brothers, five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.  Funeral services were held on Mon., Nov. 29, 2004 at Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home.  Burial was in Como.

Bernard "Ben" G. PARRISH, 72, of Portland died on Mon., Nov. 15, 2004.  A native of St. Elmo, Ill., he was born on July 11, 1932 to the late Opal (Smith) and Gilbert Clinton Parrish.  He was an accomplished singer and businessman whose family has lived in the Highland community of Sumner Co. since 1945.  He is survived by his wife of 54 years, one daughter, two sons, one sister, one brother, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.  Funeral services were held on Sat., Nov. 20, 2004 at Highland Seventh-day Adventist Church in Portland.  Burial was at Old Brush Cemetery.  Wilkinson-Wiseman Funeral Home was in charge of all arrangements.

Guy Millard ROBERTS, 85, of Gallatin died on Mon., Nov. 22, 2004.  A native of Sumner Co., he was born on Feb. 21, 1919 to the late Nancy (Morris) and Richard Roberts.  He worked in construction for Nell Dias and has also been employed at White House High School.  He was a member of the Assembly of God church.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Gautier Roberts, mother and father, stepmother, Sally Gaddis Roberts, six sisters, Berdie Minnis, Louise Ray, Nola Hodges, Dorothy Roberts, Bessie Ray and Corrine Key; and two brothers, Hayden Roberts and William Roberts.  He is survived two sons, two sisters, four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
