Mr. L. P. Lanier

Death has again entered our little city and claimed for its victim one of our most beloved and highly esteemed citizens. Mr. Luther Presley Lanier, aged 37 years, who died at his home here Saturday, January 23rd at 1:30 o'clock, death resulting from tuberculosis of the kidneys. Mr. Lanier had been in delicate health for the past ten months but was able to be up a greater part of the time up to about the middle of December, when he was carried to Nashville for an operation, returning home two weeks before his death occurred. For a number of years he was the efficient pharmacist at the Consumers Drug Store, where by his geniality and upright dealings, he won the love and respect of all with whom he came in contact. He was a devoted member of the Baptist Church and as long as his health permitted he was a regular attending at Sunday School and church services. Mr. Lanier was a deacon of the Baptist Church having been ordained only a few months ago, and had he lived he would have performed the duties of that office with the loyalty and fidelity of a strong Christian character. He was a kind and affectionate husband and a devoted and indulgent father. In the death of Mr. Lanier we lose one of our most prominent citizens, a man of the highest integrity and one who numbered his friends by the score. His untimely death has caused genuine sorrow through out the entire county. Besides his father, Dr. T. L. Lanier of Perris, Cal., and two sisters, Mrs. T. D. Kirkpatrick of Perris, Cal., and Mrs. H. B. Lane of Portland, Mr. Lanier is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Addie Swan, daughter of the late Rev. J. W. Swann, and four children, Mary Ellen, Clara Thomas, Annie Ruth and Presley Swann. Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the presence of a large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends. Rev. Geo. B. Bush, pastor of the Baptist Church, who conducted the service, made a beautiful and touching talk befitting the occasion, after which the Masons performed their usual burial rites. Interment took place in Portland Cemetery. The Herald joins their many friends in extending heart felt sympathy to the bereaved family.
