This newspaper obituary was in a scrapbook presented to Kenny and Lenora Durrett from her grandmother, Mrs. Tommie (Lizzie) Briley. Lizzie was born 20 Dec 1883 and died on 11 Jul 1966. LUTHER D. KIRBY
On Monday June 13, 1932 the death angel visited a home in Nashville, taking the father companion and friend. Luther D. Kirby was born Feb. 5, 1885, died June 13, 1932, age 46 years. He had been in ill health for several years and suffered untold agony. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Rosa Ethel (Hicks) Kirby, and six children R. D., Bruce D, Raymond D, Blanche, Nadine, and Stella, father and mother, Mr. And Mrs. J. N. Kirby, two brothers, Lonnie and Ollie Kirby, and five sisters, Mrs. T. W. Briley , Mrs. Ral Link, Mrs. Delbert Link, Misses Pauline and Lorene Kirby, all of Portland.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. H. Austin and G. A. Huffaker of Nashville. His remains laid to rest in Portland Cemetery.
He made his home in Nashville for the past fourteen years and during that time he won the respect of his employer by the Tenn. Electric Power Co., and was faithful and conscientious in his work. The following fellow workman in full uniform were his pall bearers; R. L. Griffin, T. C. Jackson, W. E. Toon, E. S. Wilkerson, Henry Riggsbee and N. F. Nelson. Wilkinson Bros. and Wiseman of Portland were in charge.
His nieces, Estelle Briley, Mildred Kirby, Marie and Louise Link carried flowers.
He professed his faith in Christ in early life and lived true to his religion until his death. We can't understand why he suffered so, but he bore his suffering with patience and fortitude until God saw fit to release him from the cares, heartaches and pains of this world. His days of suffering are ended, and we say to his father, mother, family and friends that if we do God's will we have the blessed assurance that he has a home prepared for us in that City, not made with hands.
His chair is vacant, his place can never be filled but if we go to God for help and strength, he will help us through the dark and lonely days, when life does not seem worth living and take us into that glorious light of his presence, where someday we will understand. A FRIEND

Of my darling boy, Luther D. Kirby, June 13, 1933
One year has passed since that sad day.
The one I loved was called away,
No more on earth I see your smiling face.
There is no one in this wide world can ever take your place,
You suffered hours, yes hours of pain.
To wait for care but all in vain
The face I loved is now laid low
His loving voice is still,
The hand so often clasped in mine,
Lies now in death cold chill.
Oh! What would I give to clasp his hand,
See his dear sweet face, hear his voice
See his smile that meant so much to me,
I miss him more as the time passes on
Than I did on the day of his going;
For absence can never close the door of my heart,
And the lamp of my love is still glowing,
In a home that is lonesome to day.

We desire to thank our friends and neighbors for their help and sympathy in the recent bereavement and death of our dear son and brother. We especially thank Bro. Aust for his words of comfort. And to the singers for their sweet and consoling songs. Also to Wilkinson Bros. And Wiseman.
