George W. Horton, 72, died early yesterday morning at his home, 609 N. Fourth St. after a long illness. Mr. Horton was injured in a fall from a tobacco barn in Smith County 22 years ago and had been a semi-invalid since that time. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. today at Shelby Avenue Baptist Church. The Rev. P. F. Langston and the Rev. J. W. Mayfield will officiate. Burial will be in the Spring Hill cemetery. The body is at the residence. Mr. Horton was a native of Smith County, where he was engaged in farming before his accident. His parents were Dave and Nancy Welch Horton. He had lived in Nashville for 18 years and was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Leona Smith Horton; five daughters, Mrs. Toy Boyd of Baxter, Tenn. Reuben Horton - 1 Killed, 2 Hurt As Trucks Crash A Davidson County truck driver was killed and another truck driver and a pedestrian were injured early yesterday near Elizabethtown, Ky. when two heavy vehicles crashed head on while attempting to avoid the pedestrian. Dead is Reuben Horton, 42, of Edenwold community, driver for Terminal Transport Company. The injured were identified by Kentucky State highway patrolmen as John P. Berry, 34, Louisville, driver for Coldway Transport Co., Louisville, and Mrs. Joseph G. Lee, Upton, Ky. Teddy Bennett, radio operator at the Elizabethton patrol station, said Mrs. Lee apparently walked into the paths of the two trucks as they met in Upton, a small community 16 miles south of Elizabethtown. Bennett said the two vehicles swerved to avoid striking her. The accident occurred at 4:40 a.m. Mrs. Lee and Berry were treated and released at Brick Hospital, Fort Knox, Ky. Horton was dead on arrival at the hospital. J. R. Riddle, dispatcher at the company's terminal here said Horton left Nashville for Indianapolis, Ind. around 11:30 p.m. Sunday. The body will be brought to Eastland Funeral Home, 904 Gallatin road. Funeral arrangements were incomplete last night. Horton was a native of Smith County and had lived in Nashville for 16 years. He had been with Terminal Transport Co. for the past five years. Prior to that, he had been a driver for Southeastern Motor Freight Lines. He married the former Miss Myrtle Shoemake of Smith County. In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter Shirley Edith Horton, Nashville; a son Melvin Carrol Horton, U. S. Mrs. Lula Gilbert Holt, 54, of Antioch Pike, wife of Wallie Claude Holt, died after a heart attack at 7:00 a.m. yesterday on route to General Hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. at Woodbine Funeral Home. Fay Cornwell will officiate. Burial will be in Franklin, Tenn. A native of Smith County, she had been a resident here most of her life. She was a daughter of Mrs. Fannie Horton Gilbert and the late Bob Gilbert. In 1947 she was married to Holt, a former employee of the Stove Foundry. He survives. Mrs. Sarah Saunders, 62, died at her home, 51 Lindsley Ave. yesterday afternoon following a year's illness of cancer. Mrs. Saunders, born in Smith County, came to Nashville 35 years ago. Funeral services for Jess Horton, 56, who was killed Saturday night when struck by an automobile on Hermitage Avenue, will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Amos Bracey Funeral Home by Elder Leo Boles. Burial will be in MT. Olive cemetery. Mr. Horton, who lived at 44 Middleton Street, was struck shortly after 9:00 p.m. by an automobile which police said was driven by Joe Gilmore Pruitt, 33, of 60 Hermitage Avenue. The accident occurred a few feet north of the Middleton-Hermitage intersection. Pruitt was free last night on $1,000 bond charged with manslaughter. Mrs. Ferguson died May 23 (1986) at Sumner Memorial Hospital. Born April 8, 1889, she was a native of Wilson County but resided in Gallatin. She was the daughter of the late James McKnight and the late Fannie Swafford McKnight. Mrs. Ferguson was the wife of the late Jesse Horton and the late Will Ferguson, and mother of son Billy Horton, deceased, and daughter Ader Bently, deceased. She is survived by two sons, Frank W. Funeral services for Mrs. Nancy Jane Iventh, 65, native of Hopkinsville,
Ky., and resident of Nashville for the last 18 years, who died Tuesday evening,
were held this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at Roesch-Johnson-Charlton funeral
home. The Rev. H. H. Wise officiated.
Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Her sons were
pallbearers. Mrs. Iventh made her home here at 429 1/2 Houston Street. She
moved to Nashville after her marriage but later returned to Kentucky. In
recent years she had made her home with children here. Mrs. Iventh was a
devoted member of the Nazarene Church. For the last two years she was in
ill health. Survivors are six sons, George,
Jesse, Willie, Albert, Clarence and Walter Horton, and three daughters, Mrs.
Robert Gilmore, Mrs. George Saunders and Mrs. Jim Jarratt.
