PORTLAND YOUTH DIES FROM SMASH

Portland Tenn., June 27

Horace George, 18 of Halltown, was fatally injured about 6 o'clock tonight in an automobile accident just outside the city limits of Portland. J. W. Wiseman, whose ambulance picked the boy up, said George was riding on the running board of a car driven by Charles Sherrell. The car struck a parked truck on a curve and the boy was knocked off, Wiseman said. His injuries included a broken hip, broken legs and broken arms. He was brought to Vanderbilt Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Funeral arrangements had not been completed tonight.

Horace George's Funeral Tuesday

Funeral services for Horace George, eighteen-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Edd George of the Halltown community, was held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Halltown General Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. B. C. Carroll, pastor. Burial was in the church cemetery. Survivors, besides his parents, are one sister, Alma George; four brothers, Amond, Donald, Glenon and Jackie George, all of the Halltown section. Young George was fatally injured Monday evening at 6:30 o'clock while riding on the fender of a car said to have been driven by Charles Sherils. The young people had been attending a ball game in Portland and were on their way home. The Sherils car was rounding a curve just outside the city limits south of Portland on Highway 109 when the driver reportedly came so close to a truck parked on the roadside that young George was badly crushed, though neither car nor truck was damaged. The truck was parked in front of the home of Irwin Wix. A doctor and ambulance were summoned to the scene of the accident but George died before reaching a hospital.
