Death Claims W. C. Austin

Cashier of Portland - Bank Succumbs to Effects of Influenza and Pneumonia - Portland was profoundly shocked and grieved Monday afternoon, on learning of the death of Mr. W. C. Austin. This splendid man passed away at his home in the Western part of Portland from the effects of Spanish Influenza and pneumonia after a week's illness. Mr. Austin was one of the towns well known business men, having been Cashier of the Portland Bank for a number of years and was also Mayor of the town. He was clever and courteous in all his business dealings and personally was one of the most affable and congenial of men. In the death of Mr. Austin, Portland loses one of its most prominent and highly valued citizens. As a result the people are bowed with sorrow and regret. He was a native of the county and was about 39 years of age. He was a member of the Baptist church and a high-toned Christian gentleman. He leaves surviving his widow and four children. Funeral services were conducted at the Portland cemetery by Rev. W. G. Mayhaffey pastor of the Baptist church,. assisted by Mr. R. D. Moore, President of the Portland Bank.
