Joseph W. Austin Answers Summons
J. W. Austin, 88, died Saturday, February 22, at the home of his son, Sam
Austin, Portland. He lived the greater part of his life in the Orlinda community,
but for the past thirteen years had made his home with his son. At an early
age he professed faith in Christ and lived a devoted Christian life. He was
a member of Byrum's Chapel Baptist Church. On October 22, 1876, he united
in marriage with Miss Sinia Payne, who preceded him to the grave in 1926.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Hermo Groves of Portland, Tenn., and
Mrs. Bessie Groves of Orlinda, Tenn.; two sons, Claude Austin of Tacoma,
Wash., and Sam Austin of Portland; nineteen grandchildren fourteen
great-grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were
conducted from Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon
by the Rev. Woodall and Elder Jim Wade, with burial at his old home
place.
