Obituary - Lucy Ackerman

April 11, 1906

Submitted by Jan Johnson Barnes

The death angel has again visited our community and taken from our midst one of the oldest and most highly respected ladies.  Mrs. Lucy Ackerman was born in Robertson County, Tennessee July 21st, 1825 and died April 11, 1906 after a long and lingering illness.  Aged 80 years, 8 months and 21 days, Ma was the youngest daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Moore Durrett and had six brothers and two sisters, all of whom have preceded her to God's bright home.  Ma was married to Hamilton Ackerman, April 28, 1843.  This union was blessed with four children, Clay, Francis Durrett, Hamilton Luther, and Annie Elizabeth.  Two of her sons, Clay and Hamilton Luther died when small.  Francis Durrett made his home in Florida until his death in 1893.  Annie Elizabeth became the wife of Francis E. Durrett and died September 11, 1895.  Ma was a member of the Christian church and lived a faithful and consistent member.  She has spent the greatest part of her life in her native state, except a short time spent in Kentucky, Missouri and Florida.  Poor Ma, her share of sorrows and sufferings were great, but she bore her sorrows endured her suffering, and has gone home to reap the reward of a faithful life well spent.  Though sick a long time and weary with suffering, she was always cheerful to her many friends when they visited her.  She often said she was not afraid to die and was only awaiting the summons of her blessed Master.  She leaves nine grand children, three in Florida, five in Tennessee, one in Michigan also several great grand children and many other relatives.  Poor Dear Ma, I know full well that our loss is your gain, but it is hard to give our loved ones up.  God being my helper I'll keep my promise to meet you in that bright home where death and sorrow never come.  Ma was laid to rest at her old home where she was born and reared three miles south of Cross Plains, Thursday April 12, 1906, there to await the judgment morning.

Farewell to earthly friendship breathing,  To Heaven I go

Renewing there the broken circle, In God's eternal home.

Mrs. Annie Blackard, Greenbrier, Tenn.
