Lottie Elizabeth (Bohm) Mackay, 74, died at the Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, NY, on October 27, 2001, after a five-year battle with breast cancer.

She was born in Vienna, Austria, on June 7, 1927, the daughter of Gertrude (Rie) and Victor Bohm. After the Nazi takeover of Austria in 1938, the family moved to England and thence to New York State, making their home in Poughkeepsie. Gertrude Bohm taught chemistry at nearby Vassar College, and that was where Lottie Bohm attended college, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1947. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at Yale University, where she met her future husband, classmate Donald A. M. Mackay. They were married after graduation, on June 30, 1952.

Following in her mother's footsteps, Mrs. Mackay worked as an organic chemist after graduation, including several years working in Burroughs-Wellcome Laboratories alongside George Hitchins and Gertrude Elion. She retired from bench work in 1955, when the first of her four children was born. In 1957, the Mackay's moved to Pleasantville, New York, where they have remained since. A second home in Waitsfield allowed her to pursue her love of skiing, first learned in the Austrian Alps of her childhood, and to share that with her own children. The Mackay home on East Warren Road became the scene of countless busy family Christmases, Thanksgivings, and vacations, with friends and extended family always made welcome.

In the mid-sixties, Mrs. Mackay resumed working outside the home, serving as producer and editor in the educational divisions of Schloat Productions, EAV, and Prentice-Hall Media. Her expertise in chemistry, mathematics, history, and languages led to a wide variety of assignments. In 1985, she earned a master's degree in computer science, and then taught computer courses at Westchester Community College for the next fourteen years.

Wide-ranging knowledge, a welcoming smile, and reserves of energy made Mrs. Mackay a valued resource for many children at homework time. She was also an avid and accomplished tennis player, competing successfully with her sister in many member-guest doubles tournaments. Her grandchildren will remember her for long walks to the Folsom Brook, carefully planned field trips, and joyous holiday celebrations.

Mrs. Mackay is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald; their son, Alastair, and his wife, Carol Long, of Towson, MD; their daughter Ann and her husband, Alan Miller, of Waterbury, VT; their daughter Janet and her husband, Haile Wilson, of Essex Junction, VT; and by eight cherished grandchildren: Fraser, Finlay, Clare, Thomas, Innes, Kate, Helen, and Henry. Their eldest child, Kathryn, died in a small plane crash in 1979. Mrs. Mackay also leaves her sister, Maria, and her husband, Ishier Jacobson; and her brother, Henry Bohm, and his wife, Lucy; and well-loved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, cousins, and dear family friends. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 9th, 2001, at the Presbyterian Church, 400 Bedford Road, Pleasantville, New York. The Reverend Kathryn Kibbie Laird will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kathryn Mackay Scholarship Fund at Harwood Union High School, or to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service.
