Note: Each voter is identified as having qualified to vote in either of two manners: (1) upon paying a tax ("contribuyente") or (2) upon their capacity or ability ("capacidad"). The voter entries of men listed as registered due to "capacidad" contained an additional observation concerning their position. In the list above, if no additional information follows the name of a voter then he was designated as a taxpayer ("contribuyente") in the original document. The 1892 Electoral Census of Puerto Rico published in La Gaceta is
actually a town by town listing of the registered voters in Puerto Rico.
In 1892, only 2,483 men were registered to vote in the entire island.
An article about the 1892 Electoral Census, and an inventory of the Town
Voter Lists with source citations was published in the July/August 1997
issue of the Puerto Rican /Hispanic Genealogical Society's newsletter El
Coqui de Ayer (Vol. 2, No. 4). For information about ordering a copy
of a back issue of the newsletter, please see the PRHGS
Publications Page.
