In 1897 Puerto Rico's capital city, San Juan had just 27,020 inhabitants. At that time San Juan was divided into 5 districts, that were further subdivided into barrios -- the eqivalent of a political ward in the United States. The 1^st District was comprised of the following barrios: Bayaja, Mercado and Catedrál. The 2^nd  District included San Cristóbal and San Francisco. The 3^rd District had only one Barrio, Marina. The 4^th also had one barrio, Puerta de Tierra. The 5^th had the most number of barrios, Santurce, Carretera Ceboruco, Bayola, Machuchal, Condado and Punta de las Arenas. At that time the city's chief official was the Alcalde- Presidente, don Antonio Ahumada y Gutíerrez.
