Polish Records
Transcription Project
PolandGenWeb is looking for volunteers!
PolandGenWeb is looking for volunteers to transcribe records to be made available to all visitors to the PolandGenWeb site. PolandGenWeb will never charge a fee to view these records, unlike other genealogy web sites which require a subscription fee. All transcriptions donated will be made available to ALL visitors.
Can I choose which records to transcribe?
Of course! If you rent a microfilm containing your ancestors' parish or civil records in Poland, why not transcribe the rest of the records on that microfilm? You can extract the records (names and dates) for a single year, or you can extract only the births, marriages, or deaths on the microfilm for any span of years. You can contribute the records for only one village in that parish for one or more years. If you're short on time, you could simply transcribe the indexes for a given period. Not only will you help your own research by doing this, you will also be helping others who are researching their ancestors in that same parish. Of course, you are entirely welcome to transcribe records from an area unrelated to your own research.
How quickly do these records have to be done?
Take whatever time you need to complete the work. Make it a season-long project! There are so many records available on the web for a price. Why not have the satisfaction of knowing you have made information available for FREE?
Where do I get copies of microfilmed records?
At present, the only source for microfilmed Polish vital records (outside of Poland, of course) is your local LDS Family History Center or the main library in Salt Lake City. For a very small fee (usually about $3.50 US), you can order the microfilm of your choice from the main LDS library and view it in your local FHC. You can either transcribe them in the FHC or photocopy the records and transcribe them in the comfort of your home.
Not enough free time to do this?
Consider teaming up with others to transcribe a single microfilm. With two or more transcribers, the job will be much less time-consuming! Each of you can take a section of records. Or transcribe the index only. A list of names contained in the record book and the pages they appear on can help another researcher rent the correct microfilm. You could always provide us with photocopies of microfilmed records of your choice, and we'll find someone else to transcribe them.
Can't read Polish or Russian or German, etc. and would still like to help?
Again, you could provide us with photocopies of the records of your choice, and we'll find someone else to transcribe them. Or you could transcribe records from a Polish church or tombstone inscriptions from a Polish cemetery in whatever city your Polish ancestors settled in. Or send us a transcription or photocopy of the passenger manifest on which your ancestor appears - even if it's only a few names. Every little bit can help another researcher!
What records are welcome?
PolandGenWeb will accept any of the following records:
Send an e-mail to PolandGenWeb. Please use VOLUNTEER as the subject heading. Tell us what records you wish to transcribe and what source they are from. We'll be glad to hear from you and more than willing to answer any question you might have.
What records have already been transcribed?
Visit the Transcribed Records page!
Does what I donate become the property of PolandGenWeb and/or RootsWeb/Ancestry.com?
NO. RootsWeb/Ancestry.com does not own the content of PolandGenWeb or the site itself. They simply provide PolandGenWeb with webspace on their server. Transcribed content is fully credited to the person who donated it and does not belong to PolandGenWeb.
