The Alvis Family

Welcome to Peter Alvis' website.

I am researching the ancestors and descendants of the Alvis family in the United Kingdom. At present I am focusing on the Alvis family in the Bristol, Somerset and Gloucestershire area of the UK. Any help would be much appreciated.

Descendants of George Alvis and Anna Yescombe married in Clevedon, Somerset, England on 31 March 1773.

Descendants of George Alvis and Mary Harding of Clapton-in-Gordano, Somerset, England.

Descendants of George Alvis and Sarah of Tickenham, Somerset, England.

Descendants of James Alvis and Mary Hill married in Kingston Seymore, Somerset, England on 31 March 1774.

Descendants of Thomas Gibbs and Hester Pickett married in Wroughton, Wiltshire 9 November 1767.

Descendants of Hester Palser (Pazzard) of North Nibley, Gloucestershire.

In Norse mythology, Alvis (all-wise) was a dwarf.

Thor's daughter, Thrud, was promised to Alvis in exchange for which Alvis made weapons for the gods. Thor devised a plan to stop Alvis from marrying his daughter. He told Alvis that, because of his small height, he had to prove his wisdom. Alvis agreed and Thor made the test last until after the sun had risen - all dwarves turned to stone when exposed to sunlight, so Alvis was petrified and Thrud remained unmarried.
