During the course of my childhood, I only had the pleasure of knowing one of my grandparents. My mother's mom lived with us when I was quite young. She passed away when I was twelve. I never knew what it must have been like to go "Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother's House". While in school, it seemed as though everyone knew which "old country" their family had originally come from. My parents didn't seem to know. After my first hitch in the Army, during Viet Nam, I attended a Memorial Day Service where I discovered there were some Pettit's listed as Veterans from the War of 1812 and the Civil War buried in Howard Lake, Minnesota. No one seemed to know who they were, or if they were relatives. This was the beginning of my quest to find my family's history.
