Pepall are my paternal ancestors, it is a rare name, so assuming that all Pepall must be related, we record every occurance we find and put them into our database. What we have basically ended up with, apart from a few strays, are two family trees.

Our branch originate in Wiltshire about 1650, move across the border into Berkshire, then onto Oxford for a couple of generations, over 100 years. Mystery man Thomas Pepall (1763-1814) may have been a servant to one or more people with educational/religious connections, which could explain his marriage in London, the births of his children in Oxford, Coventry, Oxford again, Guildford, London, a second marriage in Petersfield, Hampshire with more children and finally to Kingston, Surrey. The London children stay in London or emigrate to the USA, others move south across the river to Lambeth, some furthur south to Wimbledon another off to Australia, another to Portsmouth via Scotland, then the distribution you see today.

The other branch appears in 1820 in High Wycombe with two brothers whose origins are a bit vague, they are more prollific than our branch and account for the Pepall's in Birmingham, Sheffield, Reading, the majority of those in Canada and Western Australia.

So because we have all known Pepall this database has by default become a "One Name Study".

The database also contains the Peepall line from north west Hampshire because of the spelling and relative potential because of their proximity to the Wiltshire/Berkshire borders.

According to some sources Pepall is a surname of French origin, first adopted by supporters of the French Papin Kings, later derived from "pépin", the french for pip, possibly a nick name for a gardeners, but there are no Pepall in France only Pépin. Pepall can be found in England, Canada, Australia and the USA, all decended from families from England.

Another source says it is a name derived from a place because of the "all" ending

The spelling of the name in "official" records is not consistent, spellings that I have found in parish records, wills and admons, census returns et al are, Pepall, Pepal, Papal, Peepall, Peepal, Peapal, Peaple, Peple, Paple, Pephall, Pepil, Pepale, Peppall, Peapall, Peopall, People et al, modern man seems to have equal imagination if my junk mail is anything to go by.^{1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15}
