LOUISIANA SUGAR PLANTATION

Oak Alley Plantation is typical of the plantations in the South in the first half of the nineteenth Century. Many were owned by our ancestors. There were also many cotton plantations.

Most plantation owners had slaves working for them. Many slaves were grossly mistreated by their owners. However, some slave owners treated their slaves well and took good care of them. Some were allowed rest periods from their labor throughout the day while others were driven to hard work for 11 or 12 hours a day.
