PEAVEY, GEORGE G. LIEUTENANT

BROOKLYN, NY

George W. Peavey, 60 years old, of 107 Euclid Avenue, dropped dead last night as he was entering the ferry house of the Twenty-third street Ferry. The man was accompanied by his wife. The two were on their way to Manhattan. Mr. Peavey was in the act of paying the fare at the ticket office when he put his hand to his side and sank to the floor. His wife thinking he had fainted, unloosened his collar and did everything to revive him. In the meantime an ambulance had been summoned, and upon arrival of Dr. Delaney of the Eastern District Hospital he pronounced the man dead.

The woman realized that her husbands condition was serious and became hysterical. To quiet her somewhat the ambulance surgeon decided to remove the body to the ambulance, saying that they could probably give the husband some relief at the hospital. The woman, however, became uncontrollable and wanted to get in the ambulance with the body.

Mrs. Peavey was taken to the Bedford Avenue station house, where she walked up and down the floor, wringing her hands and crying hysterically. Late in the evening she was taken to her home in a coach.

Mr. Peavey was born in France and came here when quite young. He was a member of the First New York Regiment of Volunteers, serving during the entire war and upon his right hand he bore the mark of a wound inflicted by a pistol bullet fired by the famous Confederate General Moseby, when during a skirmish in the Shenandoah Valley, Sergeant Peavey endeavored to saber that officer. The encounter has been made a part of history and the first New York Cavalry Association, of which the deceased was the president, was exceedingly proud of his record. The veteran was discharged from the army a first lieutenant. Ever since the war he has been connected with the Williams Printing Company of Manhattan as a superintendent.

A cablegram was sent this morning to Teeler, British Honduras, to Robert Peavey, a son of the deceased, who is in that country organizing a rubber tree and banana plantation. The remains will be placed temporarily in a vault in Cypress Hill Cemetery, Friday morning and internment will take place upon the sons arrival.

It is the belief of many of Mr. Peaveys friends that his demise was brought about through excessive grief over the death of his friend, Peter J, Hiltman, superintendent of the Salem Fields Cemetery. Peavey and Hiltman were inseparable and the two families were so closely united that when Mr Hiltmans death on Saturday was followed immediately after by that of Mrs Hiltman Sunday morning, Mr Peavey is said to have remarked to a member of the family, I feel so badly over my friend Hiltmans death that Cypress Hills will no longer serve me as a dwelling place.

A widow, a fair Virginian whom the soldier met and won during the war, survives him and her sorrows are shared by four sons and a daughter.

Funeral services over the remains of Mr.George Peavey will be held tomorrow evening at the Peavey resident, 107 Euclid Avenue . U.S. Grant Post, of which the deceased was a leading member, will be at the funeral in considerable numbers.
