Gilbert was born of strong New Hampshire heritage. His mother descended from a great-grandfather who was at Valley Forge with George Washington. His father descended from a grandfather who served in the Revolutionary army.

Gilbert's uncle Peter Pevey (brother of his father) was a Captain in the War of 1812. Peter died at the age of ninety-five.

His mother still enjoyed amazing physical & mental strength at the age of ninety-one.

Gilbert attended Lowell High School where he was a Carney Medal scholar. He graduated from Harvard in 1873 and won several scholarship prizes. He went into partnership with the Hon. Theodore H. Sweetser where he had studied law in his office. Gilbert remained with him until his death. Gilbert then became associated with Colonel John H. George who was the Attorney for the Boston & Lowell Railroad.

Gilbert was elected City Solicitor of Cambridge in 1893. He became a member of the Masonic order, affiliated with the lodge in Cambridge. He was Odd Fellow and was connected with many social clubs. He also was a Republican politically. He was the Assistant District Attorney from 1897 to 1900.

Religion was important to him as he was an active & earnest Baptist.
