According to the "Exeter News-Letter" as recorded in "New England Vital Records Vol. 31", Lt. Lyford Peavey had died in Baltimore, Maryland. The date of the newpaper report was Dec. 23, 1861. He was the son of Col. John Peavey of Tuftonborough. This paper reported news of interest to the community about people who were living in Exeter at the time as well as information on people who were originally from the area and had since moved away. It is possible that Col. John was already in Michigan at this point and the paper was reporting the news for the benefit of friends and family in the area. It is also possible that John was still living in the area. Further research revealed that Lyford had enlisted as a Lieutenant 1st Class on September 15, 1861 in Marshall, Jackson County, Michigan at the age of 24. His commission was in Company C, 1st Infantry Regiment Michigan on Nov. 2, 1861. He died of disease on November 28, 1861 in Baltimore Maryland. This information came from "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers 1861-1865", published in 1903.

At this point we are making the assumption that Lyford was using his middle name, his full name being Joseph Lyford Peavey. In this case the dates and the father match up correctly as confirmed by the 1850 Census. He was married to Angeanette Upham in July of 1861 and they had a daughter named Josephine Lyford Peavey August 10, 1862. This is not quite nine months after his death in November of 1861. This makes it likely that his wife was with him in Baltimore at the time of his death and she then returned to family in Wisconsin where Josephine was born. The locations fit well with the migrations of the rest of the family during this period. The name Josephine Lyford would seem to confirm that Lyford's full name was Joseph Lyford Peavey.
