PEAVEY - Birth: 1876 in Wolfeborough, Carroll County, New Hampshire NOTES: John was a Lumber Manufacturer and very successful businessman. He moved to Wolfeborough in 1855. John L. Peavey received his education in Tuftonboro, Northfield, Laconia and Lancaster, New Hampshire. He began lumbering on his own account at the age of 19 and his operations extended from the sea to Winnipiscogee. He manufacured almost three million feet of lumber yearly in Albany and operated many portable mills in many locations of the forest wilds. Lumbering was only a part of vocation and skills. John build the Hotel Glendon in 1872 and conduted it in person for seven years. Then he built the business block bearing his name on South Main and Union Streets which has become a Wolfeborough landmark. He was active in helping organization of the Republican party and was a delegate to the National Convention in 1880 which was held in Chacago. He held other offices of distinction: President of W.L. & B. Company, Town Moderator and he was very popular with all clases of people. John's word was his bond and needed no signed paper for himself or others. Some sources show Mary F.'s death as 1880. However, Mary F. is listed in the 1900 census as being 67 years old.
