PEAVEY, CLAYTON D.

LANDENBERG, PA

Clayton D. Peavey passed away peacefully at home on Thursday evening July 31,2008 after a long battle with cancer. He embraced the inevitability of death with the same degree of courage and selflessness with which he led his life.

Born on June 14, 1929 in New York City to Clayton and Florence Peavey, Clay spent most of his early years on the family farm in Carlisle, New York. After graduating from William Cullen Bryant High School in Queens New York, he served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps. His studies at Queens College, New York University Graduate School of Public Administration and Harvard Business School prepared him for a 31 year career at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey from which he retired as Deputy Director of the Planning and Development Department. Deeply committed to community service, Clay maintained a lifetime involvement in the management of nonprofit agencies serving on the Board of Directors for the Institute for Child Mental Health, Retarded Infant Services, Saving Families for Children, Community Council of Greater New York and the Manpower Development Corporation. Further, as a grateful and dedicated friend of Bill W for over thirty years, Clay volunteered endless hours helping others achieve their goals. Among his greatest joys were being in nature, spending time with his dear and many friends, attending the ballet, cheering for the New York Giants, spending time with his golden retrievers, and the annual trip to the beach with his children and grandchildren.

Clay is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Kristina; his sister, Claire Blumberg and her family; Loretta Peavey, mother of his daughters, Sarah Carvalho and Debbie Graves, their husbands and 3 children.
