OHIO OBITUARIES PAVEY PAVEY, CATHERINE E. MEDINA, OH Catherine Ellen "Kitty" Pavey, 53, passed away Thurs day, March 27, 2008, at her home in her Medina OH. She was born Nov. 27, 1954, in Norfolk, Va. Kitty was a Medina County resident for 21 years. She was an active member and volunteer at First Baptist Church in Medina. She is survived by her son, Timothy Pavey of Columbus; friends, John and Mary Long of Medina, and Jake and Joyce Leiby of Strongsville; sister, May Khoury of Strongsville; parents; sisters; brother; and countless people she called family. CHARLES 1906 - 2004 COLUMBUS, OH The youngest man to ever graduate from Ohio State Medical School, Dr. Charles Pavey II, died Tuesday, Feb 17, 2004 from natural causes in his home. Pavey, 97, was born 13 May 1906, to father Charles William Pavey and mother Emma Metzger Pavey. A graduate of Columbus North High School, Pavey received a Bachelor of Science from Ohio State in 1926. He promptly followed that with a medical degree from the class of 1928, graduating only 14 years after the medical school was founded. He was the oldest living graduate of the medical college. Pavey's medical career spanned 57 years; 43 of which were spent as a member of the OSU Medical School's Obstetrics faculty. He also unofficially held the title of most experienced obstetrician in Columbus. In his 57 years of service, Pavey is said to have delivered more than 25,000 babies, and no one is disputing this claim. Celebrated journalist Walter Winchell even nicknamed Pavey "the Baby-Catcher" in a 1932 column for the Ohio State Journal. Pavey was revered in his community for his tireless work ethic and love for the area where he spent his entire life. "Charles was a great friend to the university community," said Linda Ridihalgh, a 32-year resident of the north campus area. "He lived every one of his days to the fullest that he could." Pavey established Eventide, Inc., a rental management company, in 1937 as a side project to his medical practice. He hoped to preserve the community in which he grew up. Eventide's properties are located in the 2200 block of North High Street, north of Lane Avenue and south of Oakland Avenue. It was Pavey's hard work and determination that restored the appeal and charm to the century-old houses he owned. Eventide established a reputation for reasonable rent and punctual responses to maintenance requests. The realty business became a family affair when, 20 years after Pavey started the company, his son joined Eventide and worked there until his death in 2001. Pavey will be remembered by many of his friends as a kind, loving and gentle man."He was such a wonderful person, he loved his community and most importantly children loved him," said Ben Brace, a retired university employee and long time friend. "He always worked so hard in preserving this area, he has done so much. He will be remembered for the pride he took in his home." Pavey's life is a story of triumph in a time when technology was scarce. In an interview with The Columbus Dispatch in 2001 Pavey recalls how great of a risk childbirth used to be. "Cesarean section deliveries were difficult, and now they aren't thanks to antibiotics," Pavey said in the article. "The risk is greatly reduced." His spirit will live on in the houses he restored and the thousands of people he brought into the world. He will be remembered by the people around him as a diligent worker who never ceased from improving the place he called home. "He leaves behind a grand legacy. We should all remember Dr. Pavey for what he has given to this community," Ridihalgh said. He is survived by one son, Jonathan Rector Pavey of Indianapolis IN, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 69 years, Gwendolen Rector Pavey; by their daughter Nancy Gwen Pavey Martin; and by their son Charles William Pavey III. Also predeceasing him were four half-siblings: Hugh McCoy Pavey, Edith Belle Pavey Taylor, Mabel Zoe Pavey Blackburn , Grace Delphine Pavey Schmaltz; and twofull-siblings: Roy Donald Pavey, and Fay Adelaide Pavey Smith. Isaace Pavy (SIC), By a fall from his horse, was suddenly precipitated into another state of being. He breathed an hour or more, after he fell: but never opened his eyes, or spake again. He was in his 75th year: was a native of Sussex County, DEL: Embraced Religion and joined the Church in his native state almost sixty years ago: had Been a preacher almost 50 years: emigrated to the West, first to Kentucky, and finally to Ohio, in about 1808-09. And settled on Lee's Creek, near Leesburg, Highland County. Here he opened his door for preaching and invited his neighbors to hear, and preachers to preach: while he himself preached in all the new settlements with his reach, and was useful. In 1811, when the harvest truly was great, and the laborers few, too few for the great missionary field that lay us, Isaac Pavy, and several other local and located preachers, came to our help, and entered the itinerant ranks and helped us very much. Brother Pavy rendered Efficient service for seven years, and then retired to the local ranks. His house was always the comfortable home of the traveling preachers: Asbury, Whatcoat, MacKendree, Roberts, and others, often lodged and rested here. All those who led the way, and prepared it for others wherein to follow, are passing off the stage in rapid succession. On the day after his death, I preached his funeral sermon to the aged widow, children, grand-childrend, and great grand-children, and a large concourse of citizens and friends. Brother Pavy bought and paid for his land twice, and yet left his numerous family of sons and daughters much better provided for than are most of the families of those who, by dishonest and dishonorable land speculating, seek to enrich and aggrandize themselves. Pavey, 88 (formerly of Wilmington, Ohio) loving father, grandfather, uncle and friend, passed away July 28, 2007, at the Parkvue Health Care Center, Sandusky. He was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Wayne County, Ind. He graduated from Walnut Hills High School, Cincinnati, and attended Miami University. During WWII he served as a communications officer in the Army Air Corps in China from 1942-45. He was a former president of Wooley Electric Supply in Cincinnati and a former president of Mason Fence Company in Leesburg, Ohio. He was a member of American Legion and Elks. He donated 17 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He is survived by his daughter, Pamela (Gary) Brunetti; grandchildren Melissa and Nicholas, and nieces Penny and Carol in Michigan. AKRON, OH Elizabeth Ann Peavy was called to her heavenly home on November 24, 2009. Liz was born on February, 12, 1949 in Akron, Ohio, to James and Gloria Peavy. She attended Akron Public Schools graduating from Buchtel High School in 1967. Liz went on to The University of Akron, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in 1971. Liz left Akron to pursue graduate studies in Yellow Springs, Ohio, at Antioch College and in 1974 received a Masters in the Art of Teaching. In 1987, she received a Doctorate in Education in Urban Literacy from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. She brought that expertise to a cross-section of teaching positions at many colleges and universities, including: Oberlin College; Earlham College; Columbus State; The University of Cincinnati and, most recently, Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland. Her spirit of activism and passion for civil rights and social justice, particularly in the area of African American issues and adult literacy were always evident and hard at work. This fervor led to the opening of The Septima Clark Center for Urban Literacy, in Columbus, Ohio, which was named for the civil rights pioneer of the early citizenship schools in the South. Liz was Founder and Executive Director from 1990 until 2001, when illness prevented her from continuing the Center. Liz relocated to Maryland and taught at Anne Arundel Community College where her family, students, colleagues and friends were privileged to enjoy her optimism, sweet nature and love of life. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and a host of other professional groups and civic organizations. Liz was preceded in death by her father, James Peavy, Sr. and her brother, James, Jr. She is survived by her devoted mother, Gloria; sister, Judith (Keith Sr.); brother, David; nieces and nephew, Monica, Jessica (Tamir), Samantha and Keith Jr., respectively; sister-in-law, Marquetta Peavy; very special friend, Cecelia Veal, and a host of other aunts, cousins, relatives and friends. MISCELLANEOUS OHIO OBITUARIES HUTCHINS, MARGUERITE �Reeti� Daughter of Marilyn (Peavey) Hill ASHTABULA, OH Marguerite "Reeti" Hutchins, 48, of Hiram Avenue, died Friday, June 26, 1998, after a four-year battle with multiple myeloma. Born July 27, 1949, in Ashtabula, she was the daughter of Gordon W. and Marilynn (Peavey) Hill and was a lifelong area resident. After graduating from Ashtabula High School in 1967, Mrs. Hutchins attended Mount Union College in 1970, where she earned a degree in education. She taught first grade at McKinsey Elementary School before becoming an employee of the Ashtabula YMCA. She retired in 1997 because of ill health. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ashtabula, the OCCL and of the "Y" Masters Swim Team. Survivors include her father; three sons, Michael, Dan and Ryan, all of Ashtabula; a brother, the Rev. David Hill of Sunbury; a sister, Susan White of Mobile, Ala.; and her fiance, Bob Ward of Ashtabula. She was preceded in death by her mother. (Peavey) PORTAGE COUNTY, OHIO PARIS - Robert Ray Richards, 63, died Monday, March 12, 2001 at his home. Born July 11, 1937 in Wayland, he was the son of William and Margie (Whitney) Richards. He was a 1955 graduate of Southeast High School. Mr. Richards was employed at General Motors in Lordstown for 30 years until he retired. He also was an accomplished carpenter. He was a member of Portage Community Baptist Church in Ravenna and United Auto Workers Local 1112. He served in the U.S. Air Force from July 1955 to September 1962. Survivors include his wife, Marie E. (Peavey), to whom he was married 42 years; sons, Rick of Paris and Dave (Jeanne) of Champion; daughter, Debra (Jim) Holloway of Paris; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; parents, William and Margie Richards; brothers, Donald of Newton Falls, Albert of Florida and Tom of Washington; and sisters, Louise Driesbaugh of Paris, Wilda Carr of Ravenna, Mildred Bates of Newton Falls, Dorothy Hillier and Mary Harvell, both of Florida, Janet Henik of Austintown and Clara Myers.
