Birth: ABT 1634 in Amsterdam, Holland Note: Thomas Jans Van Dyke was the oldest child, born in Amsterdam, and was about 18 when his father and step mother came to America. He lived in New Utrecht, Long Island, and was elected Magistrate of New Utrecht from time to time. He married twice, his first wife being Sytje Dirks with whom he had 4 children. He united with the Reformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn on April 10, 1661. They settled in New Amsterdam. In 1657 the Director General, Peter Stuyvesant, gave permission to commence a settlement at Yellow Hook, New Utrecht, Long Island on New York Bay. One of these lots was apportioned to Jan Thomason Van Dyke. On October 2, 1659, the Director General and the Council of Fort Amsterdam ordained as follows: "The Director General and Council of Fort Amsterdam notify the inhabitants of the town of New Utrecht to keep good order and for the purpose of keeping better watch, they have appointed and set as in other places, the person, Jan Thomassen, to the office of Sargeant; they therefore order the inhabitants of the town of New Utrecht to obey and acknowledge as Sargeant the above named Jan Thomassen." Jan Thomassen Van Dyke was generally known in New Utrecht simply as Jan Thomassen, according to the prevalent custom at that time. Jan Thomassen Van Dyke died sometime prior to 1678 according to the record of the Dutch Church of Flatbush. He also bought 200 acres of land in Somerset county, New Jersey, which he willed to his son Hendrick. Hendrick Dirkese Van Dyke was born about 1658 in New Utrecht, Long Island. He became known as Hendrick of Yellow Hook. With this church his wife united in 1735 At the organization of the Reformed Church of Neshanic, Hendrick and his wife became members of the new church, Hendrick became known as Hendrick of Neshanic.
