John DE ATHY (Before 1427 - After 1444)

Birth: Before 1427 - Galway, County Galway, Connacht Province, Ireland
Death: After 1444 - Galway, County Galway, Connacht Province, Ireland

It is believed that the Athey family dates back to Gerard de Athee (Grard DAthe), military
leader and knight for Richard the Lionhearted, King of England. He was possibly born in or at least
took his name from a location known as Athee (Athe-sur-Cher) near Tours and the Cher River in
France, thus Gerard of Athee. He subsequently served King John in France as commander of Loches
Castle, one of the last strongholds to resist Philip Augustus in Normandy. He was captured but was
so valued by King John that he was ransomed back to England and he and his kinsmen were granted
estates. When the Magna Carta was signed by King John in 1215, Gerard and his kinsmen, including
his son, Engelard of Cigogne, were mentioned, albeit negatively, in paragraph 50 where it indicates
that they would be removed from their offices and hold no further offices in England. Engelard of
Cigogne is believed to have subsequently adopted the surname Athee which evolved into Athy and
eventually Athey. He or his descendants migrated to Ireland where they became one of the great
merchant families (tribes) of Galway. One of the eventual descendants was John DE ATHY born
sometime before 1427 in Galway.

Line of Descent Following John DE ATHY (Before 1427 - After 1444)
(All Born in Galway, County Galway, Connacht Province, Ireland):

   Richard ATHY (1485-?)

   John ATHY (1505-?)

   Walter ATHY (1550-?)

   John Athy (?-?)

   Walter ATHY (1585-?)

--------------------------------------------------------------

George ATHY (1642-1709)

Birth: 1642 - Galway, County Galway, Connacht Province, Ireland
Death: March 7, 1709 (or 1710) - Prince Georges County, Maryland

Father: Francis ATHY (1615-1666)

            b. 1645
            d. Before 1686 in Nanjemy (now known as Nanjemoy)
                  Charles County, Maryland

Sometimes referred to as Ann MARTIN, but this may be due to confusion
relative to Ann MARTYN, the mother of George ATHY. MARTIN is an
alternate spelling of MARTYN, so George ATHY's first wife was probably
            Ann MOOREWOOD, not Ann MARTIN.

Children:

 * John ATHY (ATHEY) (1675-1729)

   Elizabeth ATHY (ATHEY)

George ATHY, being the second son of Francis ATHY, would not inherit anything. The family merchant
business went to George's older brother, Walter ATHY, who, in 1666, moved into Oranmore Castle in
County Galway, leasing it from the fith Earl of Claricarde. Walter ATHY's decesdants controlled
Oranmore Castle until 1853.

Faced, as indicated, by not inheriting anything, George ATHY, along with his younger brother, John
ATHY, entered into the service of Thomas DENT of Maryland under a seven year indentured servitude
arrangement. The indentured servitude began in 1661 or 1662 and George ATHY came to the colonies at
that time.

After his term of servitude, George ATHY bought land in Charles County, Maryland and became a tobacco
planter. He married his first wife, Ann MOOREWOOD in 1670 and they had two children, John and
Elizabeth, as indicated above. Following Ann's death, George ATHY, in approximately 1686, married his
second wife, Sarah MARSH, born in 1666, and had two more children, Thomas and George, Jr.

In 1696 George ATHY was named Captain of Foot for Piscattoway Parish in the Militia of Prince
George's County, Maryland. At that time, he became known as "Captain George Athy" or "Captain George
Athey", the name by which he is frequently referred.
