LIEUTENANTS (Active List)
By Order in Council of August, 1860, the old rates of Half-Pay are abolished for the future; but no Officer, now in receipt of 6s and 7s a day, to receive less than his present amount of Half-Pay. Lieutenants, however, may be allowed Half-Pay at the rate of 5s a day, if through illness contracted in the Service, they shall have been unable to serve three years at Sea in that Rank; and the Half-Pay of Lieutenants to be in future fixed according to Sea-Service in that Rank, on the following scale:

MATES
2s 6d a day or �45 12s 6d per annum after 3 Years' actual Sea Service as Mates, and when unable to obtain employment in Her Majesty's Service, provided their conduct during service shall have been satisfactory, and provided they do not decline or avoid service when called upon.
The Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are empowered to allow any Mate to retire from the Service, with a Pension of 2s 6d a day after 20 Years' actual Service, during ten Years of which he must have held the rating of Mate.
SECOND MASTERS
2s 6d a day or �45 12s 6d per annum after 3 Years' actual Sea Service as Second Mates, provided they cannot obtain employment in the Navy, and provided they do not decline or avoid Service when it is offered to them.
The period of 3 Years' Service may be dispensed with in the case of Officers who shall have been invalided for sickness or injuries caused by the Service, and which shall render them permantently disqualified for further employment.
In no case will Half Pay be allowed to Second Masters, unless the conduct of the Officer, whilst serving, shall have been in all respects satisfactory
ASSISTANT PAYMASTERS - as Mates
Extract from the Admiralty Instructions, Art 29, Page 10              
"Every Officer on coming upon Half-Pay, is to report himself by letter to the Secretary of the Admiralty within rourteen days thereof, if at home, and within the same period olf arriving in England from abroad; stating the cause thereof, and the period from which his Half-Pay should commence; and any Officer failing to comply herewith, will be liable to forfeit his Half-Pay for the time he may neglect to claim it."
