Circular No. 40,
Admiralty, 11th February, 1860.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty being desirous of preventing Apprentices whose Indentures are still in force, from entering the Royal Navy, are pleased to direct that Officers and others authorised to enter or enlist Seamen, be careful in all cases to ask the Volunteer if he be an Apprentice and inform him that if he is, he will not be allowed to enter, warning him that should he make a false statement, he will be liable to be punished summarily, under the 16th Section of the Act 16 & 17 Vic., cap. 69.

In the usual certificate on the Form required to be filled up for Boys entering for continuous service the following words are to be added immediately before signature, after the words "attached hereto," "and declares that he is not indentured as an Apprentice."

By Command of their Lordships,
C. Paget,
To all Commanders-in-Chief, &c.
