Tuesday 1st June 1869
"An old ship of mine arrived from the West Indies. I went onboard and saw L.C Boyle a great friend."
Wednesday 2nd June
"Queens Birthday. I drove out to the review with Boyle and met a very pleasant young fellow named Murray, Inspector of Police in one of the West Indian Islands. Went to the theatre in the evening and saw Aladdin played. 11.30pm returned onboard. "
Friday 4th June
"HMS Cadmus went onshore and knocked a large hole in her bottom. The crew are to be turned over to the Barrosa another Corvette only larger. "
Thursday 17th June
"Fleet were about to sail but were detained by the breaking down of the Barrosa�s engines."
Saturday 19th June
"We all started at last leaving the Barrosa behind to join us at Madeira. Weather very calm, but the hour for starting very early - it being 3.30am. Nothing of importance occurred during the passage to Madeira except the usual drills and manoeuvres of a fleet. "
Wednesday June 23rd
"Admiral inspected this ship. Nothing of importance occurred just a regular services inspection in which he found fault with the Midshipmen�s ignorance in seamanship � all except myself and two other fortunates. "
