Inspectors of Machinery, Chief Engineers, and Assistant Engineers - Pay and Pensions - 1856

The undermentioned Regulations relative to the Pay, etc. of Inspectors of Machinery, Chief Engineers, and Assistant Engineers, have been established under Her Majesty's Order in Council of the 4th of April, 1856.

The system of dividing the Chief Engineers into three Classes is abolished, and a higher rate of pay, as in the case of Masters, is to be granted to such as are qualified to serve in 1st or 2nd Rates, than to those not so qualified, and their pay is to increase with length of service.

The Chief Engineers now in the 1st Class are to be regarded as qualified for the 1st or 2nd Rates, and all Chief Engineers are to retain their present pay if exceeding that allowed by the new scale.

Harbour Pay and the present system of Pensions to Chief Engineers are to be discontinued, and Half Pay is to be granted in lieu thereof.

A certain number of Assistant Engineers who may prefer it, and who maybe considered fit and deserving, will be passed at the Admiralty as Engineers qualified for Charge. They are to hold their present rank in the Service, but their pay is to be �182. 10s. Op. a year, with an increase of 1s. a day after Six years' sea service as Engineers in Charge. These Officers will no longer be liable to serve under a Chief Engineer, and they must give up the expectation of becoming Chief Engineers and Ward Room Officers.

No change is to be made in the regulations respecting the Harbour Pay and Pensions of Assistant Engineers, but Inspectors of Machinery, Chief Engineers and Assistant Engineers, are to be placed with respect to Pensions and Gratuities for Wounds or Injuries, and also with respect to Pensions and Allowances to their Widows and Families, on the same footing as Masters of the Fleet, Masters, and Second Masters respectively.

Engineers &c. - Pay &c.

My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty have been pleased, under the authority of Her Majesty's Order is Council of the 22nd instant, to establish the following Regulations with regard to the Pay, Half pay, &c,. of the Engineers of the Royal Nary.

I. Full and Half-Pay

All time served as Acting Chief Engineer, and four years of time served as Assistant Engineer will be allowed to reckon towards increase of Full and Half-pay.

Assistant Engineers when in charge of engines are to be allowed One Shilling a day in addition to their pay.

The widows of Engineers qualified for Charge having more than ten yearn service to charge. will be granted pensions of Forty Pounds a year each, provided the usual conditions laid down in the Queen's Regulations for the grant of Pensions are fulfilled.

Those Engineers only who may have been serving at the date of Her Majesty's Order to Council authorizing these Regulations, or who may hereafter serve, are to be entitled to the benefit of these Regulations.

Assistant Engineers in Charge of Engines.

In order to determine whether Assistant Engineers in charge of machinery are entitled to the extra Shilling a day allowed under Her Majesty's Order in Council, dated 22nd February, 1860, My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty are pleased to direct, that the words " In charge of Engines " be inserted on the Ships' Books and Pay Documents against the names of all Assistant Engineers who are in charge.

Extra Pay of Engineers in Charge of Engines.

Having had under our consideration the regulations at present governing the rates of pay of Engineers in charge of engines in Your Majesty's ships, as established by Your Order in Council dated the 22nd February, 1860, under which Engineers and Assistant Engineers in charge are granted Is. per diem extra-no allowance whatever being received by Chief Engineers in charge; we are humbly of opinion that, looking to the great responsibility and arduous nature of the duties entrusted to these Officers, it would be to the advantage of Your Majesty's Service if the following rates of allowances were in future paid to Engineers of every grade (including Assistant Engineers) when in charge of engines in ships in commission, in lieu of those at present established, viz.:-
