Even though it may well be that only one Casebolt ever immigrated to America, the idea of the new world evidently penetrated early and deeply into the family consciousness in England.

Ferdinando Casbolt was born in 1634 in Linton to Alexander and Grace (see Appendix A, page A-4, generations 13 & 14). So far as I can find he was the first Ferdinando in the Casbolt family.

During the 1620's and 30's, Sir Ferdinando Gorges was one of the most vigorous promoters of English colonization in the New World.¹ As early as 1605 he began touring England, showing off five American Indians who had been captured in what were to become Nantucket and Maine by Sir George Weymouth who had been sent to the new world by the Earl of Southampton (Shakespeare's patron).² Inasmuch as Ferdinando Gorges had been nationally visible and had been promoting settlement in the new world, it seems likely that Alexander and Grace were enough taken by the "new world" idea to name their second son after Sir Gorges.
