PREFACE to Volume One

CASEBOLT -- An American Family

The Casebolt family is my mother's family. This work aims to cover all those who have descended from Casebolts and those who have borne the name Casebolt in the United States. Therefore some adopted children and ex-slaves may be included.

The first volume is devoted to the old country origins of the family and to the first and second generations in this country.

The second volume will contain one chapter on each of the original emigrant's twelve eldest grandchildren and one step-grandson. Herein the Casebolt family in America is divided into twenty-five clans with a grandchild of the original emigrant at the head of each. The clan names are either the married name of a granddaughter, or the principal place of settlement of a grandson.

The third volume will cover the clans founded by the emigrant's twelve youngest grandchildren.

The first edition represents over thirty years of difficult work. Since, for the most part, family bibles, and, in many important areas, official records of births and marriages were often missing, many of the families presented are painstakingly reconstructed from census and corroborating sources. As such they must contain many mistakes and inaccuracies. It is my hope that virtually every person who cares enough to read this first edition will send me whatever evidence he or she has both to support corrections and clarifications and to help fill in omissions.

In a few years, I intend to follow the first edition of Volume one with a later much improved edition. Therefore any information forwarded to me by readers which will improve this history will be both acknowledged and appreciated.
