Notes for MAUD ANNA CRAWFORD:

Lived in the home built by Barney Hunsinger, Forks Twp., Sullivan County, PA. It had always remained in the family and Howard and Ellen Sayman Reed were the last family members to reside there. The house was auctioned off in April 1988. Here is a picture of the old house taken in 1943. According to Carol Brotzman, the summer kitchen was in back, and there were "all kinds of critters" all over the fenced in yard. Says Carol:

I met my first guinea hen there! There were dogs and cats. I remember a few parakeets too. There was always at least one "cow dog" around the place, usually more. The one in the picture below liked to lick people's feet if they didn't have their shoes on. I used to get yelled at because I'd take my shoes off every chance I got. I guess they were worried about me stepping on a snake, as if shoes would keep me from being struck. In the last of her years, Ellen lamented that she had tried and tried to get the guinea hens repopulated again, but they just didn't survive, for some reason that she could never figure out. I really miss them and going out to the end of the porch to pump that wonderfully cold, tasty water. The pump still worked, the last I knew (about 3 years ago).
We always went there for Easter. All the rest of the cousins tell me now that Aunt Maud spoiled my sister Donna and me.

Another Sayman descendant, Mary Sayman makes the following comments about the history of the house:

This house was indeed the home of Levi and Maud Anna Crawford Sayman. It was inherited by Marvin Sayman, then swapped to Ellen Sayman Reed and her husband, Howard. Marvin did not want to be a farmer, so he traded houses. This house was probably built by Barney Hunsinger as the caption indicates, because in the basement it is etched with a note on the wall that the house was built by Barney Hunsinger. It was,however, added onto by Manessa H. Sayman in 1872, from whom it was inherited by his son Levi. There is a cornerstone with Manessa's name inscribed on it.
Manessa was born in 1851, married in 1871, and his first son arrived in December of 1871, so he would have been 21 years old when the house was built. Perhaps Barney and Manessa worked at different times to build the house and put their names on the wall and cornerstone. My father, Guy Sayman, was raised on the adjoining mountain and spent many, many hours at this house. Manessa would have been a widower, and Levi would have taken over the house and farm because Emanuel, the first-born, had built a house down the road. This house was never expanded as we know expansion. There was a summer kitchen - a whole separate building - that stood apart from the house, to the right, as you look at the house from the road. That summer kitchen was eventually moved to the left side of the house and fastened on to it. Howard and Ellen eventually converted the summer kitchen to a mud room and their bedroom.
Following the traditons here in the Northeast. whenever an additon was added to an existing building, it was noted, signed in concrete, chiseled, by whatever means was available. As Carol Brotzman and I have been discussing, it is entirely possible amd mostly likely feasilble that Mansessa added onto the house and signed his name and date. Thus we have the two names and dates.
